This SNOPR contains DOE's analyses and results to assess the effects of new or revised energy standards for microwave ovens on consumers. The analysis includes a technology and market assessment, a screening analysis, an engineering analysis and national impacts analysis.

The energy use analysis estimates the annual average microwave ovens' operating hours in representative sampled households. This analysis is used to calculate energy savings and other consumer analysis within this SNOPR. The analysis is based on RECS field data from various regions, and takes into account the different patterns of usage of microwave ovens in various households and also the variation in regional electricity prices.

To evaluate the effects of new or amended standards on household expenses, DOE conducted LCC analyses and PBP analyses to estimate the cost over time of purchasing and using a micro-wave oven with different levels of efficiency. The LCC and PBP calculations use an algorithm that is based on Monte Carlo simulations to incorporate uncertainty and variation into the analysis.

In addition to the energy-use and LCC/PBP analyses in this SNOPR includes an analysis of the national impacts of amended or new standards based on the NIA spreadsheet model. The NIA model calculates the industry's net present value ("INPV") in terms of energy savings from potential amended or new standards in the form of site energy savings and FFC energy savings.
