The Robot Hoover Awards: The Best, Worst, And Weirdest Things We've Ever Seen

The Best Robot Hoover

The best robot hoover can mop and vacuum without needing your attention, and it will leave your floors clean. Its low cost and top-of-the-line features (such as dirt detectors) are positives.

Examine your robot's brush regularly for tangled debris as well as hair. Wash them if needed. Some models will automatically empty their onboard dust bin into a larger bin at the base, which reduces the amount of fine dust that is released into the air.

1. Roomba Q5 pro

The Q5 Pro and its sibling, the more expensive Q7 Max Series, are among the most powerful robot vacuums we've test. They have motors that are top-of-the quality and can suction up to 5,500 Pascals. And, like other top iRobot models (including the top pick) they utilize intelligent mapping technology to create precise floor plans and eliminate common obstacles like cords and furniture legs. They also have carpet boost, a feature that increases the robot's power when it spots an abundance of dirt on the carpet, allowing it clean quickly.

Both the Q5 and Q7 Max Series get very good scores in our tests on floors that are bare, and they're particularly adept in removing pet hair. There are some issues however, which hinder them from being our first choice. For instance, the Q5's navigation doesn't have AI-powered obstacle avoidance and is therefore prone to get caught up in shoes and socks and can't navigate rooms with a lot of people efficiently in our tests. It also doesn't come with a camera that would let it see the corners of the room.

It's still a good deal particularly if your home or office has a lot of unfinished floors and you're looking to save money. It's also quiet and works while you are at work or at school. The only thing it doesn't have that you don't get in the more expensive iRobot Roomba X30 is edge-to-edge vacuuming on floors that aren't clean. It's also less effective in mopping. It relies on disposable wet wipes that don't stick well and aren't able to deal with dried-on debris. The Q5 has self-emptying docks, however. And, if you have to, you can swap the mopping pad to dry ones in just a few minutes.

2. iRobot Roomba X30

The iRobot Roomba X30 packs impressive vacuuming and mopping capabilities into an elegant, compact package. Its agile navigation and intelligent cleaning maps make it quick to clean and efficient in dealing with larger particles such as pet hair. It also has self-emptying dustbins as well as powerful suction, and support for virtual boundaries. It's the best robot vacuum for carpets, although it isn't as efficient as some of its competitors in deep cleaning.

This high-performance vacuum and mop uses sensors to keep away from obstacles and pet waste. It also learns the structure of your home over time and offer more efficient cleaning. You can change its cleaning schedule and set up zones using the app that is well-designed. It has a battery life that is similar to other models.

It is possible to instruct the X30 Ultra to remove its mops and to extend them when in a carpeted room, which helps prevent cross-contamination. Its flex arm is also great for getting under furniture that is low and along baseboards. It's not as efficient on the washboard as our other Editors' Choice Picks, the Ecovacs Ozmo N8Pro+ and the iRobot Combo j9+.

During tests during testing, the X30 Ultra was the fastest robot vacuum/mop that could complete an entire home, and it did so with only 66 percent of its battery left. It also did a great job of cleaning a mix of rooms and floors with different flooring types, including some area rugs. Its obstacle detection was excellent and it was able to avoid fake dog turds, socks, shoes and bundles of cables.

It's more expensive than the iRobot Combo v9+ and iRobot Roomba j9+, however it offers superior suction, a dustbin on board that automatically emptys into its base, and it supports voice commands through Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. It can even clean the floor after vacuuming, a feature that hasn't been seen in other robot vacuum/mop combinations.

3. IRobot Roomba X40

The robot vacuum and mop combination has a sleek, circular look that looks much like a Roomba unit than the boxy models of the competitors. It's among our most attractive robot vacuums. The latest model from iRobot is also among its most advanced. It features advanced features such as enhanced dirt detection and future compatibility (another company's robot that can wash mop pads in a self-cleaning manner).

It's also the only robotic vacuum or mop that scored the perfect 10/10 out of 10 in our tests. This is due to a mix of high-tech sensors, including a structured light system, camera and multiple lasers. The X40 Ultra was the only robot we tested that could refill and empty its basestation in a self-contained manner. It also boasted a suction of 12,000Pa as well as self-cleaning mop mops.

Like other iRobot models, the X40 is user-friendly, offering an easy mobile app interface and integration with Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. The only issue is that the X40 still a noisy unit. This can be a problem in mornings prior to work or during the night when you're trying to fall asleep.

It's also quite expensive, but not as expensive as the Ecovacs MaxV Ultra or the Roborock S8 Omni, which are both equally powerful and more attractive. If you're willing to live with a bit more noise and some extra cost it's a powerful two-in-one that will please almost everyone.

iRobot L20 Ultra

The L20 Ultra is a top-of-the-range robot vacuum and mop with many advanced features to help you forget about your chores. The L20 Ultra is a hands-free cleaning machine that is similar to Ecovacs top-of-the-line X2 Omni or Roborock's S8 Pro Ultra. It has a multifunction dock which automatically empty the vacuum's bin and refills the water tank, and washes and dries the mop pads.

The smart robot utilizes LIDAR and structured lighting to map out floor plans and spot obstacles. It navigates more intelligently than its competitors with premium features. It also has a front-mounted camera to detect hazards in real-time however, it wasn't foolproof in our testing and was often confused by power cords or other obstructions.

The vacuum has a suction capacity of 7,000 Pascals, which is more than enough to complete the task. It also has "Intelligent Dirt Detection", which regulates the intensity at which the vacuum works and adjusts the frequency of cleaning for different areas of your home in accordance with the degree of dirt they tend to be.

For larger homes it's worth looking for one with spot or zone cleaning modes that let you tell the robot to clean one specific area of your home by using the app or via voice commands. If you have furniture, a stairway mode is also useful. Finally the recharge and resume feature that allows your robot vacuum to pick up right where it left off is great for busy families.

5. iRobot Roomba RX3

The RX3 is more sophisticated than its price suggests. It does a stellar job vacuuming, picking up 55% of debris in our tests (it was second only to the Roomba Q5 Pro). It also mops using one pad that has a reciprocating motion, which is cleaner than the other robot mop cleaners we've tried. And it's highly self-sufficient with a full-featured app and a self-emptying, washable base.

The iRobot application is designed to guide you through a mapping run which collects information about your floorplan and any "no go" areas that you've marked on the map. It can be used to create cleaning schedules, or to create an automatic spot-clean. You can also use it to prioritize the most soiled areas to improve performance. The app comes with a variety of options, including seasonal suggestions, customized mapping, and advanced cleaning settings.

robot vacuum uk is more rectangular than other robot vacuums, meaning it can reach corners and underneath furniture more easily. It also has a powerful 8,000 Pascal suction and combs that are intelligent for pet hair. You can also create a spot-clean that scours a specific area.

The Miele Scout RX3 Home Vision HD is a more sleek more affordable alternative to iRobot Roomba. It is more appealing in its design, similar to Dolce & Gabbana. The twin cameras are designed to resemble cute eyes. It is capable of vacuuming, but is more prone to getting caught on low thresholds and is a bit more noisy than the other top robot vacuums we've tried. It also has a less intuitive app and a tiny base station that can't be used as an emptying bin.
