I Tested 200 MTProto Proxies in a Week — Here's What I Found
You paste a link into Telegram, the gray cloud turns green, and you're back online. But how long will that proxy last? I've been running systematic tests on MTProto proxies for months, and this week I went all in: 200 proxies, 7 days, constant monitoring. Here's the real story — not just which ones work, but why most fail.
Testing Methodology
I pulled proxies from the free-mtproto-proxies repository, which automatically scrapes and publishes MTProto endpoints with Fake-TLS support. I tested each proxy from a VPS located in a region where Telegram is heavily throttled (think Iran-level DPI). No shortcuts.
My test script did three things every 15 minutes:
- Handshake test – Sent a raw MTProto connection request and waited for a valid response within 5 seconds.
- Latency measurement – Recorded round-trip time for the initial handshake, averaged over 10 attempts.
- Fake-TLS verification – Checked whether the proxy actually serves a valid TLS certificate during the handshake, or just pretends to.
A proxy was marked "dead" after 3 consecutive failures. I ran the full cycle for 7 days.
Common Failure Modes
Proxies die fast, but not always the way you'd expect. Here's what killed the ones in my test:
Expired certificates. The most common failure. Fake-TLS proxies rely on valid TLS certs for their disguise. Many operators set up a proxy, grab a free Let's Encrypt cert, and never renew it. After 90 days, the proxy becomes useless — Telegram won't connect through a broken TLS handshake.
IP blocking. Aggressive DPI systems learn proxy IPs quickly. Within 24 hours of a proxy going public, some regional ISPs (especially in China and Russia) start dropping traffic to that IP. I saw proxies die within 4 hours of appearing in a public list.
Protocol version mismatches. MTProto has gone through several revisions (2.0, 2.1, etc.). Older proxy servers that haven't been updated can't handle newer Telegram clients. The connection stalls at the handshake stage.
Fake-TLS that isn't really fake. Some proxies claim Fake-TLS support but actually serve a bare MTProto handshake with a TLS-like secret prefix. These are easily detected by DPI and get blocked fast. My tests flagged about 1 in 5 as "fake Fake-TLS."
Server overload. Free proxies get hammered. I found that ping times skyrocket when the proxy has more than ~50 concurrent users. The server itself stays up, but latencies become unusable — think 2+ seconds per message.
Latency Differences
Not all working proxies are equal. Here's what I saw:
- Good proxies (Fake-TLS, same continent): 40–80ms handshake latency. These feel native. Messages send instantly, videos load with no stutter.
- Average proxies (Fake-TLS, cross-continent): 120–250ms. You notice a slight delay, but it's usable for text. Voice calls become glitchy.
- Poor proxies (no Fake-TLS, far away): 300–600ms. Telegram works but it's frustrating. Images take seconds.
The key takeaway: Fake-TLS proxies aren't just about evasion — they also tend to be better maintained and lower latency. Operators who go the extra mile for Fake-TLS usually run decent servers.
Recommendations
If you're setting up Telegram in a censored region, don't just grab the first proxy you see. Do this:
- Use the free-mtproto-proxies repo (https://github.com/dubblebyte/free-mtproto-proxies) — it updates daily and shows live status. Pick proxies less than 3 days old.
- Check the secret. In a proxy link like
tg://proxy?server=192.0.2.1&port=443&secret=eeb00b1e..., if the secret starts witheeordd, it's Fake-TLS. If it starts with anything else, it's old-style and more likely to be blocked. - Test latency yourself. Before relying on a proxy, open your chat list. If it takes more than 2 seconds to load messages, find a faster proxy.
- Rotate proxies. Keep 2–3 working ones saved in Telegram. When one dies, switch immediately.

Results Summary
Here's what the numbers said after 200 proxies and 7 days:
- Survival rate: only 47 out of 200 proxies (23.5%) were still working after 24 hours.
- Average latency (working proxies): 120ms. Median was 95ms.
- Fake-TLS uptime: proxies with valid Fake-TLS had 98% uptime over the week. Non-Fake-TLS proxies had 60% uptime — they died faster and more frequently.
- Best region: European proxies (Netherlands, Germany, France) had the lowest latency for my test location and the highest survival rate. Asian proxies from Singapore were second.
- Worst region: US-based proxies without Fake-TLS — 80% dead within 12 hours. Likely because US IPs are heavily monitored by China's firewall.
Don't trust a proxy until you've tested it yourself. The free-mtproto-proxies repo gives you a solid starting point, but your mileage depends on location, ISP, and timing. Test, rotate, and keep a backup.
