Unexpected Business Strategies Helped Robot Vacuum Cleaner Best To Succeed

How to Choose the Best Robot Vacuum Cleaner

A robot vacuum will save you lots of time and hassle in the case of regular cleaning. The best ones are adept at getting rid of dust, light debris and cords.

The more expensive ones will even sweep your floor but they aren't able to climb up the stairs. Make sure you choose models with smart mapping, real time hazards avoidance, and large self-emptying bins.

Best Overall

The best robots we tried were efficient, easy-to-use and able to keep up with the daily debris. You'll want a robot with decent carpet-picking power and the ability to handle stairs. And, if you're looking to add more features, you might be interested in a model equipped with smart mapping technology or an app that lets you control the robot remotely.

Camryn Rabideau, a contributing shopping writer at PEOPLE and a product reviewer who has tried numerous robotic vacuums, is credited with testing dozens of robot vacuums. She's a huge fan of robotic vacuums that offer the greatest convenience, including self-emptying dustbins and charging docks that automatically empty and fill water tanks for mopping robots. She also enjoys robots that recognize landmarks, such as furniture legs and power cables, so they don't fall when climbing steps.

This robot from Black and Decker has a lower score on navigation and less object-avoidance tech than the best-rated models. However, it does have an ample dust bin that doesn't need frequent emptying and a long battery life. It also comes with the ability to schedule cleaning sessions and return to where it was last. This makes it easier to cover larger spaces. This model is a good choice for pet owners since it is able to avoid tangled fur and food particles.

In our tests we tested the Roborock S8 Pro Ultra combines an LIDAR sensor that can map rooms and identify obstacles using a structured light sensor to identify objects and detect edges. It is able to avoid the steps, liquid droplets and furniture legs easily using this combination. It is also able to save up to four floor plans to be used in the future. It can pause and resume the cleaning process at any time, meaning you can continue to do chores while it does. The app comes with the 3D image of your home, room labels, and more advanced cleaning options.

The robot isn't as efficient in cleaning as our top models, but it is a pro in removing heavier objects like orzo pasta, metal screws and fine debris such as sand. The only downsides are that it cannot mop, and its navigation system is less impressive.

The best for Carpet

If you have carpeting in your home, search for a vacuum that has excellent pickup and good maneuverability scores on carpet and rug. Many models do a good job of picking up dust embedded in low-pile carpet and some do a decent job at picking up heavier debris such as orzo pasta, metal screws, and pet hair. They can't take in small particles like an upright or canister, and could be unable to pick up dirt close to baseboards or thresholds.

For carpeted homes, a 2-in-1 robotic vacuum/mop is the best choice. You can swap out the cleaning bin to a damp mopping mat. The Roborock Q Revo is a 2-in-1 robot vacuum/mop that can clean and mop simultaneously with circular pads spinning at 200 revolutions per minute. It detects and lifts the pads when it comes into contact with carpet, preventing it from soaking the floor. Additionally, robotvacuummops don't have to take them off or replace them after every use. The Q Revo also performs better than other robot vacuum/mops in avoiding obstacles and getting close to rugs and thresholds.

The iRobot Roomba Combo i5 is another solid option. It was a great performer in our tests and you can program it to clean your home even when you're away. It can be set up to mop only. We loved its navigation on bare floors and rugs. The Combo i5 also has a very long run time and great path planning for a device of this size.

If you want a more high-tech model, consider the Shark AI Ultra 2-in-1 Self-Empty Robot Vacuum & Mop. It has a huge charging dock that can run for several weeks without having to be emptied and boasts amazing navigation capabilities and automatic emptying on bare floors and carpets. It's also got a smart-mapping system and can be programmed to only operate at certain times of the day (a handy feature for keeping the sly kids and pets from causing chaos). The Shark isn't as powerful as other mop/robot combination models however it still picks hair and pet hair with a high degree of accuracy. It's also the most affordable value of our top choices.

Best for Hard Flooring

Robot vacuums are the ideal pick for hardwood floors because they are able to maneuver around obstacles without damaging bare surfaces. They are fantastic in removing dust and crumbs but struggle with pet hair or larger debris. They also lack the suction power of a high-end upright or canister vacuum, so they're not the best choice for carpeted areas or deep cleaning upholstery.

The most effective two-in-one robots incorporate a vacuum and a mop and take care of a more complete chore in one pass. If you have mixed flooring choose models with an onboard sensor which detects any changes in floor texture and adjusts suction to match. The ECOVACS DEEBOT T9+, for instance, comes with this feature and can move seamlessly from hard to soft carpeting.

If your home is mostly comprised of hardwood floors, think about a robotic mop and vacuum combination like the eufy S1 Pro. This model comes with an impressive robotic vacuum that has intelligent navigation that can clean hardwood floors and other surfaces. It also mop. Its sensors let it avoid hazards such as stairs.

The eufy S1 Pro mop is designed to clean hardwood floors by applying downward pressure, rather than simply swab them to get rid of dust and dirt. Its reusable mop pads reduce waste, spread germs less, and can be cleaned in the docking station, saving your time. The mops can also be cleaned and dried to prevent the spread of mold.

Both the robovac as well as the mop are both controlled by your smartphone to make it easier to manage the device. For instance, you can, use the app to designate areas where the vacuum cannot be allowed to enter, label different rooms or schedule specific cleaning sessions. The eufy S1 Pro also has an auto-emptying dock that collects debris through a trapdoor, and puts it in a disposable or bagless bin, so you don't have to empty the bin manually as often as you do with other models.

Best suited for small Spaces

As the name implies that these robots are suited for small spaces. They have smaller bins which hold less garbage. They are also more efficient when it comes to maneuvering around tight corners over larger models. They can also be tucked under furniture, whereas larger robots struggle to get in. They are generally less expensive than the more expensive models, too, although you'll need to empty them manually from their dirt compartments at the end of each cleaning session.

A few years back robot vacuums underwent an important change. Manufacturers started adding sensors that could help them navigate and avoid household items that their conventional sensors might get stuck on or run across. This has reduced the number of times our testers needed to clean up after a robotic snag whether it was an electrical cord, toy, or piece of pet waste.

The new sensors aren't completely eliminating all the issues with these machines however. The cheapest models still struggle with the same obstacles that the older ones faced and, in addition, they require a certain amount of light to be able to see where they're going. If you are living in a dark space or have lots of low-profile furniture, consider buying a model that utilizes top-mounted spinning LIDAR units to map your area, like our best overall and runner-up picks do. This lets them work in the dark and avoid obstacles such as stairs.

The models can also be programmed to only use their cliff sensors when they are on or near the ground, but not when they are above it. It is still recommended to cover any mirrors that could interfere with this function however, because the laser used by a laser-based model could bounce off reflective surfaces and cause the robot to think it's in another room.

Some of the models we recommend let you create virtual no-go zones for areas that you don't want the robot to visit. This is a great option for those with pets or small children. These features aren't available on all models we test. Check out our complete reviews before making your choice.
