What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

The name implies that transponders transmit an encoded signal with an eight-digit number code whenever it is interrogated by air traffic control. This signal is known as an SQUAWK code and forms the basis of identification of aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit specific messages to the air traffic control system in a crisis or to inform controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes can be used to communicate with ATC when the pilot is not able to communicate via radio. They are essential to ensure safe flying.

Every aircraft has a transponder that responds to radar queries with an identifier code. This allows ATC to locate the aircraft on a radar screen that is busy. Transponders can be found in various modes that vary in how they respond to questions. Mode A transmits only the code, while mode C also includes altitude information. Mode S transponders provide more details like call signs and positions, which can be useful in crowded airspace.
