Overwatch Lore

In Ramattra's origin cinematic, he describes his model being different from other omnics; specifically the term 'ravager' used to describe him. As you can see from their ingame models Zenyatta is not one of them, Ramattra being implied/canonically the last living ravager. Ramattra has been displayed to have joined the Shambali monks before Zenyatta had, even being the one to recruit him to the monestary. In many dialogues and cinematics, they are shown to have a close bond following the same idea yet going down different paths of their idealized peace. Now is about when people start to get confused, and the biggest piece of that is terminology they use to refer to one another.

Monks

What is monkhood? To put it simply; "monasticism, an institutionalized religious practice or movement whose members attempt to live by a rule that requires works that go beyond those of either the laity or the ordinary spiritual leaders of their religions." Frequently, (and I have supplied a chart as well to back up this statement) followers of monasticism will refer to one another as familial terms akin to brother, father; etc. I did not put feminine terms as women are rarely allowed into monasticism, unless it is only women (unrelavant to the topic at hand since Ramattra and Zenyatta are both canonically male.) Many take this as a sign of seeing each other as family, which is highly untrue. The reasoning for this is best displayed with a comparison; in christianity priests are often referred to as father. As well as that, they will often refer to their church members as my son/daughter/child, or even brother/sister. I find thid applicable to the situation here because they have never been specifically stated to have a brother-like relationship, and anyone can differentiate religious bonds from familial

Dynamic

You may be asking if you have read this far, really what interests you about them? Are monks not sworn to celibacy if we are going religion based? To be able to answer this question in a way I found satisfactory I did a bit more niche of research, I looked into monks who had openly been in and experienced gay relationships within the brotherhood. The most important takeaways I got from what I read were; "The monasteries are very very gay, but they don’t think of themselves as gay. In 1971, when I was first being introduced to it all, I remember staying in a monastery in Sarnath, India. They tried to keep it hidden, but often I’d come upon them. There were three monks and three beds in every room. They may not call it gay, but they were lovers. They loved each other, their hearts were open and their bodies were open.", I found this to be deeply resonating with my interpretation of their bond. They talk about doing rather affectionate things with one another, watching stars together and having deep, meaningful conversations. It has been said by Blizzard itself that Ramattra considers Zenyatta the omnic who understands him the most. The second text I have pulled is "Obvious similarities aside, this “homosexuality” is quite different from homosexuality in Western terms. First, it was restricted almost exclusively to monks and monk officials and has always been looked on simply as a traditional way to get around a rule. The monks are not considered “gay” in the Western sense, because Tibetans don’t see this kind of behavior as the result of gender identity that is somehow biologically or culturally determined. Indeed, as a rule, in Tibet non-heterosexual activity by ordinary people is frowned on. Lay people seldom if ever have same-sex lovers. The monks’ behavior is just a fact of the way our culture has evolved. Thus, when the head of the gadrugba made his request, I was not shocked. It did not affect my sense of my own sexual identity, and I knew it would not affect anybody else’s opinion of me in that sense.", showing that queerness in monestaries is quite different from the western interpretation of relationships. I do not realistically think both Ramattra or Zenyatta would stray from these beliefs. Culture and religion have been a large part of their character and I think to have them fully pictured it must remain that way.

Closure

All in all I really have zero problem with people viewing Zenyatta and Ramattra as brothers.
