Newcastle United hosted Aston Villa at St James' Park on Sunday in the Premier League. Newcastle went into the match full of confidence following their 3-1 win over Everton last weekend, but Villa were still searching for their first points and victory of the season.
both teams named unchanged lineups from their previous matches. Newcastle's strikeforce of Callum Wilson and Allan Saint-Maximin continued, while Villa's record signing Ollie Watkins led the line hoping to get off the mark.
it was Villa who started the brighter of the two teams. John McGinn saw an early shot blocked while Emiliano Buendía pulled wide from the edge of the box. Watkins then cracked a shot against the crossbar on 15 minutes.
Newcastle struggled to get going in the opening exchanges. Saint-Maximin saw plenty of the ball out wide but struggled to beat his man. Wilson tried to bring others into play but found little service.
the deadlock was broken on 31 minutes. Watkins capitalised on some slack Newcastle defending to fire low into the bottom corner from the edge of the box. 聾 It was a well-taken goal for the English striker to open his league account.
with Villa leading at the break, Newcastle coach Steve Bruce made a double switch. Ryan Fraser and Joelinton replaced Jamal Lewis and Joe Willock. The changes had the desired effect as Newcastle came out fighting in the second half.
Saint-Maximin started to terrorise the Villa defence. He cut inside from the left and thundered a shot against the post on 55 minutes. Wilson then fired wide as Newcastle piled on the pressure. Villa were hanging on.
their resistance was broken on 57 minutes. Saint-Maximin won a free kick out wide which Fraser swung in. Joelinton was left completely unmarked to power a towering header past Emiliano Martínez to equalise.
from there the game turned. Newcastle smelled blood and went for the kill. Saint-Maximin danced through again and picked out Wilson, who struck low past Martínez on 65 minutes to complete the comeback.
that proved to be the winner, despite Villa's late efforts. Newcastle held on for the three points thanks to a superb second-half performance. Meanwhile, Villa are still awaiting their first victory under new boss Dean Smith as pressure mounts.
Newcastle will be delighted to come from behind and take the full three points in an entertaining encounter against Villa. Both teams will look to build on this game when Premier League action resumes after the international break. - https://mbscore.tv/match/poland-vs-czech-republic-18712942
