Regarding Comick Alternative Project

Hello, we are the development team of “Codename: Leopard”, or, what you might recognize as “Comick-like site” that Shadowi recently talked about.
We first of all just want to make it clear that Shadowi or his staff are not related to our project except for promoting it.

Recently, we have became aware of various pieces of misinformation being spread around by people and dev teams of other competing project .

So, we decided to release this public statement about the project’s status to clear things up by answering the most common questions we’ve seen online:

Q: Is this Shadowi’s new site? Is this “Comick 2.0”?
A: No, we’re neither “Comick 2.0”or Shadowi’s personal site, we are a new platform designed by community members to read and enjoy manga, manhwa and manhua online. We are in no absolute way related with Comick or Shadowi and their staff.

Q: Is the team really made by 20+ developers?
A: No, our team is made up of 9 developers working on the project whenever they have the time to spend on it. The team takes opsec seriously to prevent a repeat of what happened to comick.

Q: Why there isn’t a BETA release online yet?
A: The aim is to release the platform in a mostly functional state, with most of the planned features already implemented. Making a site that is able to handle large amounts of data be it images, comments, etc takes time and testing, so that it can run with thousands of active user at any time. This also includes user security and privacy.

Q: What is the status of the project:
A: The project is moving along smoothly, we’re implementing new features we discussed while also maintaining a distinct and clear UI, and while there is still lots to be done, we are confident in our abilities.

Q: When will “Codename: Leopard” be released?
A: We do not have a set release date. As a team, we don’t want to rush development of the platform and risking introducing unwanted problems and vulnerabilities.

Q: Can we see how the platform looks like?
A: We will release screenshots and a video of the platform running shortly. We have some screenshots posted on Shadowi's discord server to keep everyone updated. Here's a few sneak peeks: https://files.catbox.moe/xs4u6x.zip

Q: What will be “Codename: Leopard”’s real name?
A: We cannot disclose this information at this point in time due to security/sabotage concerns.

Q: Who is backing the project?
A: Our primary backers are scanlators, we are creating a site which will offer both the best reading and uploading experience, we currently have more than 70 scanlators and group leaders supporting the project. However a donation link (possibly crypto) will be set up in the future for others to help with the funding.

Q: Why has the project been so secretive till now?
A: We wanted to lay-low while comick was shutting down, avoiding unwanted attentions (you can guess from who).

Q: Will the platform be available on Windows 98?
A: Probably not.

Q: Are you guys just vibe-coding the whole project?
A: No, our team is composed of people who have experience in coding, both on the frontend and backend team, we are not copying code from ChatGPT or any other AI.

Q: A scanlator cant write codes… are you playing with me?
A: You’d be surprised by how much scanlators and developers overlap with one another. Also surprise surprise scanlation teams have devs too

Q: What about security?
A: While we can’t share many details for obvious reasons, OpSec is one of our priority to keep the site alive.

Q: Are we stealing code from Comick?
A: No, we didn’t take a single line of code from Comick’s source code nor we asked Meo (Comick’s sole developer) for it.

Q: Is your project just a “Comick 2.0”?
A: No, our project is custom built from the ground up and is much more, aiming to improve both Comick and MangaDex shortcomings, creating a better platform for both scanlators and readers to enjoy their favorite series.

Q: Will I be able to import my reading list from Comick?
A: While it’s still a work in progress since we don’t know Comick’s list export format, we do want to introduce it as a feature, allowing a seamless transition to our platform.

Q: Who will be allowed to upload?
A: Everyone working on scans that respect our future ToS and Upload Policies will be allowed to upload scans on our platform.

Q: What if I have other questions?
A: The devs accept any questions you may have on Simplex (to protect their identities)
You do not need any account to use Simplex and it is anon
https://smp16.simplex.im/g#21Loku6nWatbe-2j34OoXzhVBn9VAz1tSkwBrZxS3eE

Q: Is there a discord?
A: Yes, there is a community discord however the devs may not be there. So we encourage that any questions are redirected to Simplex
https://discord.gg/9MfFhXK2YJ

We do hope this statement will help clear things up and kill off the misinformation that has been spreading around recently.
