Torrenting & Privacy
I believe this subject deserved a page of it's own.
About torrenting.
Torrenting, in simple terms, is where your computer connects to other computers to download the files directly.
This can often reward in faster download times than websites can provide, however it has many drawbacks.
Pros and Cons of torrenting.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
No download server required; Skip the middleman | Files may be modified by other people to include malicious files |
Overall better privacy from individuals | Download speeds may fluctuate |
The ability to continue downloading at any time | A VPN is required to avoid getting in trouble with your internet provider |
There are more pros and cons, however, I will not list them here.
VPNs and Privacy.
If you are torrenting, it is highly recommended you use a VPN.
If you choose not to, you risk getting in legal trouble with your internet provider or other third parties.
Do not use free VPNs for torrenting.
They rarely provide any real form protection from third parties.
Tor is not a VPN, it will not protect you when torrenting.
- Tor - A completely anonymous and private browser.
- r/VPN - A subreddit regarding VPNs. Useful for searching for VPNs.
- PrivacyGuide's VPN recommendations - A trustworthy site regarding additional privacy from your internet provider.
