An update on Revelations Chapter 3 development

19/06/2025

TL;DR: it is still being worked on, even if very slowly, but we have an internal plan: still, to come out in a reasonable-ish time, it will be released with some features initially cut (mainly some bosses and 'surprise stuff').

It's been a while since we gave updates on Revelations development. This update doesn't come because something in particular happened or has changed now, but it has been too much time since we said any news, and we wanted to explain why progress has gone slower than expected. We just got reminded that it was time to say something, even if only by the release of another (and more famous) largely anticipated Chapter 3.

So, development is still going, but, to put it honestly, very slow. When we started, modding was the main focus and hobby for many of us, but in the years that enthusiasm petered out, with most devs getting jobs, or interest in modding other games, or simply interest in other hobbies, leaving less and less energy for working on modding Isaac.

Months ago we agreed on a smaller scope for the initial release of Chapter 3 so we could actually ship something rather than keep chasing the original, larger plan indefinitely. This was not meant to be a secret, but we just never found the right moment to share it in public. Now is as good a time as any. To be clear, this is for the initial release, with the idea of continuing to update Ch3 with the rest of the content later. We thought this would be more feasible than attempting to do everything at once.

We cannot say exactly what was cut from the initial release to reduce the scope (as it would require knowing what was planned in the first place), but what we can say is: some bosses won't be included in the initial release, most notably the 'final boss' of the Revelations route. We are sorry if this is disappointing, especially after so many years, but especially because so many years have passed we prefer getting something out (even if not immediately anyways) then later adding to it than realistically never releasing anything because we lose interest before finish everything of the big scope Chapter 3 initially had.

We are the first people to want to see the mod released more than anyone else, especially after having it with us for such a big part of our lives (for example, I (Filloax) started working on it before university, and now I have a master's and after it a job for more than a year). Still, we had to be realistic about the time and energy we have to work on the mod, and plan accordingly.

As usual, we won't give a release date even under duress, as it would only lead to false expectations, and won't say what percentage of planned release content is done for similar reasons: since dev speed is fluctuating, there are months when nothing happens and, sometimes, days when months of dev work happens, so even saying a percentage of remaining content would not lead to realistic release date expectations.

That's it. Don't expect teasers for specific content until we are confident in being done or almost done, but this was probably due to be said: we never meant to hide anything. Sorry to keep you waiting even more, but if you're still with us, hopefully we'll see each other at the finish line for this release! And after, who knows?
