While Shadria is popular within the East Asian side of the Sonic fandom, it has faced backlash in many Western communties in recent years, largely fueled by social media discourse culture. Supporters of Shadria receive a lot of harassment, and some even delete their accounts.
This document highlights key aspects of Shadow and Maria’s relationship that can reasonably be interpreted as romantic. Its purpose is to provide context for fans who view their bond as more than platonic or familial.

      12. Takashi Iizuka, current head of Sonic Team, has referred to Maria as Shadow's "beloved" at a con in 2024.
      13. Yui Karasuno, Sonic Team's main official artist, has created Shadria fanart. In the fanart, Shadow drinks from Maria's blue mug while offering Maria his red mug. Maria is blushing and covering mouth with both hands. This is called an indirect kiss (間接キス), and it is a common romantic trope in Japanese media. In Japanese culture, sharing drinks or food from the same cup is considered intimate because your lips touch the same spot the other person's lips touched.
    3. Character Interactions
      1. Maria hugs Shadow tightly. The normally composed Shadow stutters in surprise ("B-Before we do that, we should get to a safe place..."). Notably, he hasn't stuttred when hugged by other characters in other media.
      2. Maria tells Shadow she wants him to see/feel "kindness, strength, and beauty." Shadow realizes those terms describe Maria. "YOU'RE ALL OF THOSE THINGS!". He indirectly calls her beautiful (きれい).
      3. Sonic Channel staff comment: "Maria is Shadow's 'everything'." (なんという神々しさ!)
      4. The manga states that Maria loves Shadow and he loves her multiple times.
      5. Shadow imagines Maria in "adult shoes" in the SonicPict captions.
      6. Maria is seen reading Shadow the story of Tanabata, the romantic tale of two lovers separated forever by the Heavenly River (Milky Way). It was posted on Tanabata.
      7. SonicPict's sketch of Shadow and Maria by window looking at stars. "Heavenly River", "Snuggle up close", "Tuck this side behind the ear", "Add a Tanabata-like image" on book.
      8. Shadow blushes when Maria compliments his quills. Maria says "I think the way your spines go 'swoosh' is really cool." She then asks "Shadow... are you blushing?". It is notable that Shadow hasn't blushed when complimented by other characters in any other media.
      9. A collage of Maria as seen by Shadow. She is surrounded by bishie sparkles, typically used to signify attraction.
      10. Sonic X portrays female characters with a pink sparkly background when imagined or seen by their respective love interests. Amy (by Sonic), Cosmo (by Tails), Maria (by Shadow), and Vanilla (by Vector).
      11. Shadow uses possessive language when referring to Maria. "They took Maria away from me".
      12. In the Japanese version of the Fast Friends Forever comic, Gerald says Shadow "loves my granddaughter". This is changed to "cares about my granddaughter" in English.
      13. In Dark Beginnings and in Sonic 3, Shadow and Maria are shown stroking each other and holding hands in a field of flowers.
      14. Maria uses "aishiteru" to Shadow in Shadow Generations. In Japanese culture, the phrase "aishiteru" (meaning "I love you") is particularly serious, and it is usually used in a romantic context.
      15. I asked a native Japanese speaker a question about "aishiteru" (I love you) used by Maria to Shadow. They confirm it's mostly used romantically for couples. They have never heard it used to show a "sibling-like" dynamic for an unrelated male/female.
    4. Maekawa's Endorsement
      1. Maekawa actively encourages fans to create fanart of Shadow and Maria getting married and kissing.
      2. Maekawa has referred to Sonic Adventure 2 as "the story of Shadria" and called Sonic 3 the "Shadria movie".
      3. It is commonly said that Maekawa ships everything involving Shadow. This is untrue. Maekawa has said that he only ships Shadria, and Silvaze is the occasional exception to that rule.
      4. Maekawa seems to check the relevant hashtags for art of Shadria. He has reposted the following:
      5. Maekawa says he supports Silvaze, but Shadria will always his favorite couple in the series.
      6. Maekawa says he has decided to only repost Shadria, but he can make an exception for Silvaze.
      7. Maekawa reposts fanart of Shadow and Maria kissing, tagged with the #Shadria.
      8. Maekawa's repost of #ShadariaWeek fanart titled "Firsts", showing Shadow and Maria about to kiss.
      9. Maekawa says "Oh, Shadmari, forever! To those who love Shadmari!", supporting the ship's fans.
      10. Maekawa reposts fanart of Shadow and Maria getting married.
      11. Maekawa says that Shadow and Maria have a special unique bond that doesn't fit rigidly into any category, so you are free to imagine their dynamic however you'd like. (This answer was later echoed by Eitaro Toyoda, an important figure within Sonic Team).
    5. Please Save My Earth
      1. Maekawa has stated that Shadow and Maria's story was based on the anime / manga titled "Please Save My Earth". Two of the characters, Shion and Mokuren, share similar personalities, backstories, and physical characteristics with Shadow and Maria. They are a couple, and their reincarnations have children together.
    6. Miscellaneous
      1. These are things I've noticed that most likely coincidental, joking, or unintentional.
        1. In the「SONIC & FRIENDS Sanrio characters 」collaboration, Shadow dons a Hangyodon outfit. Shadow and Hangyodon seemingly have nothing in common, except an attachment to a human girl.
        2. Shadow and Maria seem to embody The Four Loves (1960) by C. S. Lewis, a book which explores the nature of love from a Christian and philosophical perspective.

Translation: "Walking alone amidst the bustle, Shadow is momentarily captivated by the display window of a certain store. A pair of bright sky-blue shoes with a slightly adult look. In that instant...what did Shadow see in those shoes?"
Shadow was not stunned by these shoes just because they look like Maria's. Maria's normal shoes are nearly flat slippers. He was stunned because he was, specifically, imagining her in adult shoes. He wanted to see her as a young lady.

If you don't know what it means...Tanabata is celebrated to commemorate the romantic story of two lovers, represented by the stars Vega and Altair. It is celebrated on July 7th. On Tanabata, people write wishes on small pieces of colored paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo trees. These become beautiful wish trees. There are many celebrations all over Japan, which also include parades, food stalls, colorful decorations, and fireworks.
This is the most common version of the story:
Princess Orihime, the seamstress, wove beautiful clothes by the heavenly river, represented by the Milky Way.
Because Orihime worked so hard weaving beautiful clothes, she became sad and despaired of ever finding love.
Her father, who was a God of the heavens, loved her dearly and arranged for her to meet Hikoboshi, the cow herder who lived on the other side of the Milky Way. The two fell in love instantly and married.
Their love and devotion was so deep that Orihime stopped weaving and Hikoboshi allowed his cows to wander the heavens.
Orihime’s father became angry and forbade the lovers to be together, but Orihime pleaded with him to allow them to stay.
He loved his daughter, so he decreed that the two star-crossed lovers could meet once a year - on the 7th day of the 7th month if Orihime returned to her weaving.
On the first day they were to be reunited, they found the heavenly river (Milky Way) to be too difficult to cross. Orihime cried so much that a flock of magpies came and made a bridge for her.
It is said that if it rains on Tanabata, the magpies cannot come because of the rise of the river and the two lovers must wait until another year to be reunited. The rain on this day is called "The tears of Orihime and Hikoboshi".

Maekawa's Endorsement

Shiro Maekawa (前川 司郎) is the main creator of Shadow the Hedgehog and Maria Robotnik.
Shiro Maekawa is the writer of Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Heroes, Sonic the Hedgehog (2006), Sonic and the Secret Rings, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, and Sonic and the Black Knight. In addition to this, he supervised the anime Sonic X.

Please Save My Earth

Two of the characters, Shion and Mokuren, share similar personalities, backstories, and physical characteristics with Shadow and Maria. They are a couple, and their reincarnations have children together.

Mokuren was a beautiful blonde girl. She was talented, knowledgeable, self-controlled, calm, gentle, sincere, and had a warm feminine personality. Mokuren had been obsessed with Earth since childhood, and longed to live on the Earth, which she observed from the moon base her group lived in. She had the unique ability to talk with plants and animals.
Shion was a dark-skinned boy with black hair. He was a genius, a troublemaker with a sensitive heart, and he had a strong yet twisted sense of justice. Shion had serious emotional problems and never truly trusted anybody. He had a strong PSI ability.
The password to the moon base computer was Shion's name. When Shion and Mokuren's group came down with a fatal virus, Shion was the last to die due to having artificially induced immunity against various infectious diseases. After Mokuren's death, Shion went insane. But he kept his promise to her.
Maria has been voiced by Yuri Shiratoni since SA2, and Yuri Shiratoni also voices Alice in Please Save My Earth. Mokuren's reincarnation is Alice (who shares Maria's VA). Shion's reincarnation is Rin. Alice and Rin get together and have children, and sequels to PSME focus on those children.
So, the couple died, got reincarnated, found each other, and became a couple again. This was the basis for Shadow and Maria.

Moral opposition

Something I frequently see is fans claiming that Shadria is morally wrong. I'm here to explain why I don't think that's the case.

  • "Maria is too young"

The only place Maria's age has been confirmed is in Sonic X, via her capture card. It states that Maria is 12. This is the same age as Amy. If you are okay with Sonamy or Shadamy, there is no reason to complain about the ages of Shadow and Maria.
Shadow's age is confusing for some. While Shadow is physically around Sonic's age (15), he was born after Maria was, and thus relied on her for guidance. Shadow did not gain any life experience during his 50 years in stasis, and so I personally think it is silly to claim he has the maturity of a real 50 year old.
People tend to think of Shadow as older than he truly is, likely in part because his English voice actor (Kirk Thornton) sounds very old.
The movie Sonic 3 calls them both around the same age (not adults). The manga Jet Black Hedgehog calls Shadow a boy.
  • "Shadow is an animal"

Shadow is not an animal. This is an extreme misreading, and the criticism also tends to come from people who are attracted to one or more of the characters. If Shadow is an animal, why is it okay for real people to find him attractive? It would not be socially acceptable to ship Shadow with a real animal. There's a reason people are fine with the "Latinas" meme.

  • Shadow and Maria do not share any blood relation. and only call each other friends. Gerald also calls it "instant mutual friendship".
The phrase 「兄妹のような関係」 draws a parallel to the emotional closeness, trust, and comfort of siblings without implying any actual blood relation, adoption, or legal family tie. It is a shorthand for two non-family characters (often opposite-gender friends) who are exceptionally close, relaxed with each other, and treat one another with sibling-like familiarity. It is not used for adoptive or literal family members.
  • "Only Sega of Japan supports it"

Sonic is a Japanese franchise. Japanese culture is inherently a part of Sonic. At the end of the day, it is them who made this franchise, them who created and own Shadow and Maria, and them who repeatedly endorse the ship.
If you still believe it is creepy, that is your right, but in my opinion, what's creepier is the people attempting to force a strict sibling bond on a relationship built so heavily on romance.

The goal of this Rentry is not to force anyone to ship Shadria, but to inform. I have been confronted at least 100 times for liking Shadria by people who aren't aware of anything in this Rentry, and repeating myself got exhausting. I figured it would be easier to simply link this in response.
I hope that this Rentry helps take the heat off of the many talented and dedicated Shadria fans who are unfairly demonized for liking what Sega themselves hints so heavily at.
