shirabu is so adorable. that's it. that's the entry.

speaking of haikyu-bu, shirabu as an elf is absolutely adorable. i love that concept. i also adore his interactions with the rest of shiratorizawa in general—it's so nice to see little moments of their dynamic, even if most of them are goofy and comical. we didn’t get to see much of that in canon, so it’s really sweet and heartwarming.

happy new year! another year of loving shirabu, and what better way to start it than by rambling about him as an adult? a lot of people pick up on shirabu being smart when they see his adult counterpart as a soon-to-be doctor—which is a very fair and true observation. shirabu is definitely a smart and lovely individual—but i want to bring up how it emphasizes what a great supporter he is. in haikyu-bu, it was implied that shirabu might work in the field of physical therapy—to assist those who had to quit their passion due to injuries, like ushijima’s father—and i think that’s such a beautiful commentary on how he always supports and helps others. it’s genuinely heartwarming.

shirabu is such a stunning and lovely individual. it’s genuinely frustrating how underrated and misjudged he is. compared to characters like yamagata (bless him, he’s such a sweet guy too), shirabu is a bit more well-known, but even then, the fandom often reduces him to a one-dimensional character. yes, he does get frustrated when things don’t go as planned, but that doesn’t make him short-tempered or foul-mouthed, especially off the court. and the claim that he’s selfish? that’s just baffling. does he have a strong sense of self and a clear understanding of his own goals? absolutely. but selfish? not at all.
his entire journey as a setter and his future goal of becoming a doctor make it so clear that shirabu is someone who strives to help others. he’s not aiming for personal glory—his actions are so clearly about assisting and supporting those around him.
and can we talk about how much people underestimate his skills as a setter? it’s wild to hear anyone claim he’s not good at what he does. shirabu literally transformed his entire play style between middle and high school to complement ushijima’s playstyle. that’s an incredible feat, especially for a setter. his moves may not be flashy or make him the center of attention like oikawa’s, but they’re precise and fulfill exactly what the team needs. in the karasuno vs. shiratorizawa match, aside from that one low toss to ushijima, he made virtually no mistakes. that level of consistency and accuracy is so impressive.
being a setter isn’t just about physical strength or endurance, though those are important. the most crucial part of the role is quick thinking and adaptability. shirabu excels at both—he’s incredibly sharp and can adapt to challenges, even if his initial reaction is a bit resistant. and let’s not forget that karasuno’s own coach acknowledges this! shirabu isn’t some hot-headed guy who does whatever he wants; that completely contradicts his actions, especially on the court.
shirabu deserves so much more appreciation, both as a indivisual and as a setter. he’s thoughtful, skilled, and incredibly underrated.

i really hate the submissive-fication of shirabu in this fandom. yes, the ushijima fan jokes are funny, and it’s clear that shirabu admires him, but it’s important to remember that shirabu is a fan of ushijima as a volleyball player. sure, he respects him as a person, but he’s not some yes-man to him. we literally see this in the shiratorizawa match—shirabu doesn’t just stay silent and follow ushijima’s orders. instead, he challenges him, saying that the promise only holds when ushijima is usable. shirabu is loyal, but he’s not submissive or a blind follower, and it’s frustrating to see people misinterpret him like that.

shirabu 💛💛💛 i absolutely love this scene because it highlights both his quick thinking and his true skills as a setter. he immediately notices his mistake, showing how sharp he is, but it also reflects his "original style" and impatience. it's a perfect display of his personality—he’s proactive, focused, and always striving to improve, but that impatience adds such a human touch to it. it really captures who he is.

shirabu definitely chews candy when he’s stressed. not eats or licks it—he chews. it’s first discovered by the shiratorizawa members in his first year when they’re given candies as treats. while everyone else pops the candy in their mouths the moment they’re handed it, shirabu tucks his away in his pocket and continues practicing his serve. it’s only after school, when the third years have gone home and the first and second years are half practicing, half cleaning up, that he takes it out of his pocket. he slips the package back into his pocket, then just chews.
this catches the attention of the second years. tendou and semi exchange a glance before tendou (who else?) makes his way over to shirabu, cocking his head. “didn’t expect you to be the type to chew candies. don’t people usually lick ‘em?” he asks.
shirabu makes a conflicted face before sighing. “i have candy not for the taste,” he says, “but to chew them.” when tendou presses him further, shirabu explains how chewing something hard, like candy, makes him feel a little more refreshed and calms him down somehow.
it becomes a daily thing. whenever they lose a practice match, or when exams get a little too stressful, shirabu pops a candy or two and chews on them in the locker rooms. it surprises his teammates at first, but over time, they get used to the sound of “crunch, crunch, crack.” by the time he’s a second year, it’s only tsutomu who still gets a little freaked out by it.
