tentten and hitari stood at the center of the festively-themed carnival, the eerie sounds of ghostly wails and the distant rumble of thunder filling the air. tentten, eyes wide, anxious as anything, grasped her girlfriend’s arm tightly, her heart pounding against her chest. the ominously written neon signs above them flickered repeatedly, casting unsettling shadows over the scene.

"are you sure about this?" tentten asked, her voice trembling.

with her usual relaxed demeanor, hitari glanced at the haunted house ride ahead. it loomed, a dark and ominous building with jagged turrets and fog creeping out from the cracks in the walls. "it’s just a maze, tentten. just an overly simplified version of horror, a creation to scare cute little nine year old girls like you. calm down, nothing to worry about."

"im twel-" tentten swallowed hard, her fingers still clutching hitaris arm like a lifeline. "whatever. i just don’t know... it looks... terrifying."

hitari rolled her eyes, still visibly amused by tenttens fright. "then they've done their job like they've supposed to, tentten. just relax, i’m right here with you, and i'm not going anywhere."

the girl hesitated, but a mischievous smile curled on hitaris lips. "besides," she added, "if you scream, i won’t judge."

tentten tried to smile back, but her nerves only seemed to grow. they stood in line, and every time the fog rolled past, or a skeleton clattered in the distance, or a scream emitted from the darkness of the house - tentten flinched, her heart only racing faster. hitari, on the other hand, leaned casually against the barrier, eyes wandering around in boredom almost as if her only entertainment was enjoying watching tentten squirm.

"i swear hitari, if i get scared, i’m going to grip onto you like my life depends on it, so don't be upset if i end up scratching your arms up." tentten muttered.

hitari chuckled. "deal."

after what felt like an eternity, hitaris boredom was cured while tenttens anxieties were intensified as they reached the front of the line, the entrance. the grand wooden door creaked open, revealing a dimly lit hallway that seemed to be decorated in some type of victorian style - well, as if a once loved victorian style family home had been abandoned. the air felt chilling as a voice echoed from within, whispering, "enter... if you dare..."

tentten shot a nervous glance at hitari. "i’m starting to regret this," she whispered. "can we please go back to the carnival?"

"you’ll be fine," she replied, her tone soothing, but there was a glint of amusement in her eyes. "just keep your eyes on me. you don't wanna have made all these people wait so long for nothing, hm?" she gestured behind her, toward the long line of people that they had just finally gotten through, lest they go insane.

tentten reluctantly stepped forward, her fingers wrapped around hitari's sleeve. inside, the air was thick with the scent of old wood and dust. shadows seemed to dance across the walls as they moved deeper into the maze. the creaking of the floorboards beneath their feet made tenttens pulse quicken.

suddenly, a shrill scream echoed from the darkness. tentten recoiled at the unforseen shock, letting out a soft yelp. her heart pounded in her throat as she instinctively pulled herself closer to hitari, who didn’t really even seem to notice anything had happened until her girlfriend was hanging from her arm in terror.

"that didn’t scare you?" tentten whispered, wide-eyed and visibly feeling embarrassed by her displayed weakness.

hitari shrugged, unfazed. "it’s only a sound. what else do you expect from a childrens haunted house, relax, it's not even like anything jumped out at you."

but before tentten could even reply to her constantly nonchalant front, a disheveled ghostly figure lunged at them from the shadows. tentten shrieked, stumbling back, and clutching hitaris arm so tightly her fingers ached.

trying to stop her snickering, "okay, maybe i should’ve warned you about that," hitari said, barely suppressing a grin. "but seriously, it’s all fake."

tentten, breathing heavily, peered from behind her sleeves at the ghost, whose translucent form was flickering in and out of existence. "that’s not even funny," she said, trying to sound brave but failing miserably.

"relax, tennie," hitari said. "you’re safe. and its not much farther, just a few more steps and we’re out of here."

they continued through the haunted house, tentten flinching at every noise, every flicker of movement, while tari walked beside her with the same relaxed composure as always. every time something jumped out, tentten would gasp or clutch hitari harder, while hitari would just sigh or raise an eyebrow.

finally, they reached the end. the haunted house doors swung open, and a rush of cool night air greeted them. tentten stepped out, gasping for breath, her heart still racing.

she turned to hitari, eyes wide with disbelief. "that was the scariest experience of my life! i'm never doing that again."

hitari smiled, her expression softening. "you did great, though."

tentten blinked, trying to catch her breath. "i did? i was a mess."

"exactly. that was the best part, it was adorable." hitari nudged her playfully.

tentten scowled but couldn’t hide her grin. "next time, you go first."

"deal," hitari said with a wink. "but only if you get me ice cream first."

tenttens laughter echoed into the night as they walked off into the carnival, the haunted house behind them already fading into the shadows.
