"The doctor has more important patients to deal with than you."
How Sol came to exist in the first place is not quite clear to begin with. Perhaps they were the child of a couple of scientists, or maybe they didn’t have any parents at all, being the result of a rogue lab experiment. The exact documentation of their birth has been destroyed, the involved doctors and scientists long gone.

Their earliest memories involve numerous tests being done on them, the sterile white environment, and the smell of disinfectant. Being held back for quite some time, Sol started elementary school later than their peers, which caused them to become cast out early on. About the same time, they finally got taken to the Orphanage, as the doctors deemed it fit for them to slowly settle into society. Still, the tests remained constant - a weekly torture sometimes lasting more than a day, in search for a result or cure that never got shared with Sol. As time went on and they got older, the experiments also became more severe and cruel; from simple cognitive tests to physical examinations, electroshock stimulation and drug tests.

Perhaps it was the secrecy, the cruel practice and coldness of the people around them that caused Sol to have their personality shifted towards a more cruel and selfish direction. They grew up with the belief that people only exist to be used and get taken advantage of, which tainted their relations, causing them to be unable to form any meaningful friendships. They only managed to befriend similar people. Throughout their school years, they mostly cheated on all of their exams - going as far as attempting to bribe or seduce the teachers or classmates for better grades from the little money they pickpocketed. Sol’s first ever friendship - if one can even call it that - was with Whitney. It was quite simple, really: Sol did want to fit in, wanted to feel normal and live a normal life like any teenager would. That exact reason was enough for them to stoop low enough to become Whitney’s sidekick, following them around to pick on the weaker, in the hopes of getting the other boy’s admiration.

The relationship between Whitney and Sol never flourished into anything. Sol forgot about Whitney and the rest of his goons not long after having been taken to the Asylum.

No other friendship formed: Sol liked Robin, but they found him weak and pitiful, often taking his money or teasing him. Kylar was nothing more than a loser in their eyes - even if deep down they resonated with him more than they would’ve liked to admit. With Sydney, they mostly avoided each other; being disrespectful and sceptical about religion did not earn any good points in Sydney’s book, and their flirty advances were always dismissed.

All of the mentioned schoolmates have been forgotten. Most of the adults around them, too.

Bailey was different. As harsh and demanding as he was, Sol never felt truly unsafe around him. They took their relationship as strictly transactional, and Sol tried to dismiss his longing towards him time and time again. The concept of Bailey’s guilt does not completely derive from their sexual relation - which, as of now, was a one time affair mostly pushed by Sol. His guilt came from the fact that he had to remember.

He had to live with the fact that he allowed Avery to take them, which resulted in them getting taken to the Asylum - the start of an endless cycle he had to witness over and over again. Sol getting the blissful “escape”: having their memories forcefully robbed by them - but Bailey had no such option. This feeling of guilt would only intensify with time as Bailey would start having sexual thoughts towards his ward - not acting on them most of the time, but still feeling shame because of it. (I could sell them off to worse people/I could hurt them/I could take advantage etc…they would be forced to forget it anyway.)

Although Sol does forget about Bailey each time, it’s not quite like with the others. Each time they get taken back to the Orphanage, the bond and longing towards him would be the same - the want for approval and love ever present. Sol would think of Bailey as their father in a twisted, unhealthy way, no matter what.

Avery was perhaps the cause and reason behind Sol’s downfall. If not for him, Sol could’ve continued with his albeit flawed, but somewhat normal life. Sol liked Avery at the beginning, very much so. The promise of a financially secure life - without the fear of Bailey -, the lavish dates and expensive gifts were enough to distract Sol from Avery’s true nature. Their dreams and temporary happiness shattered the moment Avery started getting more demanding. Sol did not mind being an accessory - being shown off and carried around was something they might have even found some sick enjoyment in, but being treated as maid to slave away was not something they stood for. The abuse began there - the constant talking back, the refusal and teasing being enough to anger Avery to the point of beyond return. Sol didn't get injured badly enough to get taken to the hospital, and they both brushed it off as Avery being too stressed out from work. They tried to continue their life together as it was before. It was more or less successful, until Avery invited Harper over for dinner for the first time.

The initial reason for Sol being taken to the Asylum was not their behaviour towards Avery that needed fixing. During that first party, after being told to assist Harper, they got raped in his study. Their behaviour was the perfect cover-up however, one that Harper could use to deceive Avery - maintain their partnership that would be sure to get tainted if Avery was to know the truth. And so, against Sol’s will, they were taken to the Asylum. Their treatment was slightly different from the one the others went through, focusing solely on their memories and relationships with people at first.

One detail I built into the lore freely is the confirmed fact that Harper could bring back a dead or unresponsive player via the “heavy equipment” (confirmed by a Vrel qna). With this knowledge applied, Sol’s treatments became even worse, and at some point, they were treated as no more than a lab rat - with Harper’s increasing sexual interest often intertwining with the crude tests. Live dissection or amputation became a common practice, causing Sol to have more and more gnarly scars and incisions across their body. Oddly enough, Harper was never hesitant to get them discharged after enough time, personally taking them back to the Orphanage, as he found Sol’s freshly “healed” self too unstable to live with Avery immediately. They would usually live at the Orphanage for a few weeks, waiting for Avery to come for them again. All the while, they still had to pay Bailey - another important aspect they no longer remembered, and perhaps another addition to Bailey’s guilt as well: having to sell them off or get the money out of them in a more violent way, even as Sol didn’t understand what was happening. Losing their willpower and memories also caused them to forget about their purpose and responsibilities around the mansion - which, knowing Avery’s character and personality, wasn’t without consequence for too long. That is how this endless cycle began and is going to continue in Sol’s current stance - perhaps becoming even worse as Harper’s interest continues to grow.

One important aspect of Sol’s character which is important to mention is their awareness status. If they take the prescribed medication by Harper, their awareness lowers, keeping their suppressed/erased memories at bay. Likewise, if they ever were to stop taking the medication, their awareness would naturally start increasing, causing the memories to come flowing back. Not just the rape, but all the vile events that happened to them in the Asylum, or with Bailey and Avery. A high enough awareness level would cause them a mental collapse, which would in return, result Sol to be taken back to the Asylum for immediate intervention. Their best/healthiest state would be somewhere in the middle - allowing them to have bits of their old personality, but their memories still hazy.

But at least they were safe in the Asylum, right? The Doctor only wants to help, after all.

Description

They are described as an albeit tired, but young looking boy with long white hair and crimson eyes. By the looks of it, they are about the same age as the player's PC, and perhaps just a bit shorter than average. Before their first asylum visit, they liked wearing more grungey outfits that revealed more than necessary. That changed after the first discharge, and for some reason they switched to wearing clothes that are more baggy - as if it was an attempt at hiding their body.

First Meeting

The player can meet them either at the Orphanage Garden, or loitering around Danube Street. They come off almost dismissive and distant, seemingly uninterested in interacting with the player. The passage mentions them being engrossed by a journal in their hand before they finally introduce themselves as Sol.
