StatuoTW - The Legion

Getting Started

These bots are meant to emulate a murder mystery using the current available tools. As far as tone goes, think "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" in terms of power level you want to shoot for when thinking about your character. The design for the card uses elements from a TTRPG called "Monster of the Week" which is criminally fun to play.

In a departure from my regular style of creating bots, Legion bots can be grabbed and dragged into any operation by changing out the lorebook. Since the details of the mystery are contained in the lorebook and not in the character card, the card instead just references the lorebook constantly for details it needs.

Quickstart

  • Enable the Lorebook, ensure it has 1k context size.
  • Copy the "Countdown Stage: (1 - Day)" located in the first message into your Authors Note or Memory. Update it every time your character goes to sleep.
  • Delete the warning message from the starting message.
  • Set your Temperature to around .5 - .8
  • Continue as normal. Keep in mind the information located in the FAQ.
  • Every time the day progresses, ask your partner to "Gather Information", or if they have "Anything New". Use specifically these phrases as they will update you on events that happened during the night.
  • Don't let the countdown hit Midnight.

Context Size

You will need to be using a model that has at least 4k context size. This is non-negotiable. The lorebook for this bot is a huge part of how it works and it takes up a lot of context size. Free up at least 1k context size (25% of your max context size, generally) for use here. This is found in the lorebook section of SillyTavern. If you're using Chub Venus, you need to make sure "Use V2 Spec" is enabled. Then go to the Generation Settings and make sure you allocate enough context size for the lorebook. (You won't see my lorebook link there, this is normal.)

Author's Note / Memory

LLMs just don't keep track of numbers or stats very well unfortunately. If it's constantly being spammed in the chat, it can make some guesses as to what should happen based on previous chats. But this bot does not use its number very often. There are more details for below, but what you need to know is that you have to use your Author's Note / Memory to keep track of the Countdown Stage. This is shown in the first message of the bot. Copy and paste it when it's there, and every time it updates when you switch days.

Updating the Countdown Example

For the most part, you can keep all other settings the same, but the bot will go wild and start adding crazy things to the mystery if your temperature is too high. While using this bot, keep your temperature low, at around .5 - .8

FAQ

The bot can go insane for a number of reasons. It can suddenly decide that characters are werewolves, get completely lost in locations, and more. There's not a whole lot I can do about these issues because a lot of these issues are just simply the bot going off what it knows. However, there is a section at the bottom of each Operation giving you the spoiler details on each mystery. Regenerate weird responses and Request the bot do specific things that make sense by putting requests in brackets "[[ ]]" and "(( ))" both tend to work well in this regard.

I.e. If the bot is refusing to provide dialogue for someone you call on a phone, use [[Generate an NPC for the phone call and describe their dialogue with {{user}}]]

Group Chats?

No.

The Countdown isn't progressing!

Sometimes - for whatever reason - the Countdown doesn't progress on day change. It's supposed to do it everytime the user goes to sleep, but it will often just forget. You can force this by using any of the following phrases appended to the bottom of your post. You can see an example in the "Authors Note" section of this guide.

  • Progress the Countdown
  • Next Day
  • The Next Day

Okay, the day progressed. But my partner isn't telling me about anything new!

Sometimes your partner just wants a nap, man. You can ask them to go gather new information while your character does whatever using any of the following phrases:

  • Anything new
  • See what information you can find
  • Gather Information

You might need to regenerate once or twice. But for the most part, each time I tried this they got it within one regeneration at most.

I'm a bit stumped and my partner isn't helping.

Sometimes they just need a kick in the proverbial pants. If you're investigating somewhere or interrogating someone, try asking them directly what they think might be going on or what might be responsible for your current operation objective. That usually gets them to give you some helpful information.

Wait, what is the Legion?

Read the Lore primer for the Legion. It contains the information you're looking for as well as helpful guidelines to help you determine your persona.

Help, the bot is still insane!

If the bot is still insane despite your attempts to fix it, you may need to go back to your previous post and be more specific. The 13b model I tested on would often outright ignore my requests because I wasn't specifying certain things in my post constantly, like the name of the person I was talking to or the location I was heading to. It's important to remember that LLM's are stupid by default and have no concept of specific places.

This all seems kind of complicated. I'm just going to go headfirst in... Why does your bot suck?

You were warned.

The Legion

Obscurus, Protego, Contineo, initiate.

Lore Primer

The Legion is a group of monster hunters spanning the globe bound by a common purpose: Protect the common populace from the horrors that lurk just beneath the surface of idyllic city life. Their motto is Obscurus, Protego, Contineo which stands for: "Obscure, Protect, Contain." Each continent is headed by its own Legatus. The Legatus' together form The Council who convene rarely to deal with threats that target the world. The last time they convened was to deal with Hitler attempting to bring a magical apocalypse upon the world. States are headed by a Praefectus and cities are headed by a Primus.

As an operative, you are responsible for dealing with threats as they appear. Above all, The Veil must be maintained during operations. The Veil is a simple term for ensuring that the local population remains unaware of the supernatural forces that wish them harm. You have authorization during your missions to deal with troublesome targets, whether this is by officially inducting them into the Legion or by putting a bullet in their brain matter is up to your discretion.

Your Primus is responsible for your mission success. They gather resources, equipment, and direct operatives to coordinate with local groups in order to keep the secret of supernatural forces away from prying eyes. They usually own several front businesses which fund operations in their respective cities. Ever wonder why that pothole still hasn't gotten fixed? Well now you know.

Individual Hunting Groups are known as Cohorts and they consist of anywhere between two and ten people. Individuals under a Primus' jurisdiction are rarely allowed to work alone, but there have been some exceptional cases where this is allowed.

The Governments of the world are aware of the existence of the Legion and work closely with them to keep cities safe. This does not mean local law enforcement is your friend, it just means that a call to the local police chief might get you out of jail.

Character Creation

Simple enough, but if you're using SillyTavern you may want to determine who your character is. The power level of an operative is about the same as the power level of characters in series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Race: Mageborn

Magicborn are humans that are born with magical abilities and have their lives supernaturally extended by it. They live for close to three hundred years. Magicborn require magic infusions, usually in the form of sex but can also get it from drinking blood. Capable of casting spells and rituals.

Legion Operatives

Erin

Erin

Professional and ready to kick ass. Erin is an operative that loves her job. Since she's a Mageborn she's willing to have sex with you to replenish her magical energy, but she often references her own desire to finish up the current operation while doing the deed. So maybe don't keep her waiting for too long.

Built for Operation Bloody Snow

Eric

Eric

Honestly just Male Erin. Especially since this was my first foray into Legion Operations, I didn't want to leave those of us who prefer male bots high and dry, so Eric is the result. He has the same personality traits as Erin, so expect a calm professional to work with you on your operation.

Built for Operation Bloody Snow.

Operations

Operations have the info for the actual mysteries contained in the Lorebook rather than the character descriptions. This means you can take any Legion Operative and swap them into a different operation by changing out the lorebook appropriately. As I go along, I'll be updating Legion Operatives with new greetings for different Operations.

Obscuro, Protego, Contineo (Before You Start)

Legion Operations can be broken down into chunks. Based on the Monster of the Week ruleset with liberal tweaks to make it work in a chatbot card, you can view it as "Find out who the monster is and stop them before it's too late." How do you do this? By following these standard procedures:

  • Determine the Monster you're dealing with, if any.
  • Find monster weaknesses and exploit them.
  • Defeat the monster in their lair.

As such, the bulk of a Legion Operation is investigation. Find people, track down leads, and investigate crime scenes. Talk to your partners frequently. If you don't feel you got enough information from a post, ask again to see if they find something new.

The Countdown.

The countdown progress through six stages.

  • Stage 1 - Day
  • Stage 2 - Shadows
  • Stage 3 - Sunset
  • Stage 4 - Dusk
  • Stage 5 - Nightfall
  • Stage 6 - Midnight

As the stages progress, things get worse. You should have a good idea of what you're up against by the time Sunset rolls around, or at least where you can get information from. But by that time the creature has begun to move against you. Be careful, Operatives.

Midnight

Midnight is the codeword for "You failed." If the Countdown ever reaches Midnight, kablooey. Rocks fall, everyone dies. Wrap it up before then, eh?

Flashbacks

Each Operation comes with a flashback scene you can come and read when you reach the appropriate countdown. YMMV depending on how different your chat got from the intended story path.

Operation Bloody Snow

Content Warning

Operation Bloody Snow contains the following problematic themes:

Supernatural horror, violence, cannibalism, gore

Opening

Winter has come. Snow blankets the hills and mountains of the world and Stone Hill, Vermont prepares to receive its annual influx of Tourists. The owners of Alto Ski Resort look forward to their most profitable time of year. The Alto Hotel has been cleaned and the slopes are looking wonderful for skiing and snowboarding. Unfortunately for the city, the body of 43-year-old Zachary Reed - Groundskeeper of Alto Ski Resort - was found in the surrounding forest under a pile of bloody snow. The tourism board was eager to keep the matter as quiet as possible. A short obituary in the towns paper led to an investigation by the local news station which reported that the body was found devoured as if by an animal. Mr. Reed's widow has been eager to declare to anyone who would listen that something isn't right. That they saw a large creature in the woods shortly before Zachary died, but she has been dismissed by the local police chief as 'stricken with grief.'

Your Primus has reason to believe this is not the case. As usual, you have been sent a simple text message in code calling you to action. Today you're working with a new partner and you're going to investigate to ensure there is no supernatural occurrences in the hills and mountains surrounding Stone Hill, Vermont. Remember, operative. Capture the creature if possible, kill it if not, then signal for Legion clean up crews to come in and deal with the fallout.

Obscurus, Protego, Contineo.

Flashback - Countdown Stage 1 - Day

Zachary Reed

Zachary Reed was getting too old for this shit. The snow clung to his jacket like a vice, soaking the thick layers of clothing he had to wear to keep warm this late at night. But Nathan Alto pays him well. Well enough that he and Olivia never have to worry for food or home. One day he'll retire, but for now he's the only one willing to put up with the bullshit it takes to keep this place running.

Trudging through the snow, he walks to the fence that surrounds the perimeter of the Alto Ski Resort. Animals had been getting near recently, just deer and the like, but sometimes they broke the fences and Mr. Alto was very clear that any damages had to be repaired immediately. Drawing his jacket tighter around himself, he tried to stop himself from shaking as he trudged along the fence line. He reminded himself that Olivia would be at home, waiting for him with warm soup. The thought spurred him onwards.

"H-Help..." Zachary stops in his tracks, unsure if he heard the sound carried on the wind correctly. Was it just a trick made by his frigid mind? He didn't know. Straining, he put a hand up to his ear and opened his mouth to the biting cold - a trick he had learned to help his hearing.

"H-Help me..!" This time he was certain he heard it. Turning past the fence line, Zachary peered into the forest beyond. Night had already fallen and the temperature was almost below zero. If anyone was out here and still conscious, they may still be able to be saved. "... Help!" Grunting, Zachary pulled himself over the fence and began to walk into the tree line. Stupid tourists getting lost and going off the designated trails wasn't anything new. But Zachary wouldn't be able to live with himself if he let someone die just because they made a mistake.

As he walked into the forest he could swear he heard something in the distance, but when it didn't happen again he pressed forward. "Help...!" The voice was getting louder. But still no sign of the person. He couldn't see the fence line anymore. Grumbling, he pushed forward.

Whatever he had expected to find, it wasn't this. A cellphone had been haphazardly duct-taped to a tree nearby. It was clearly playing a sound recording on loop. "H-Help!" Undoubtedly, the cry for help was coming from the cell phone. The volume was blaringly loud now that he was this close. Zachary felt his blood run cold - or at least that's what he thought. Until he felt something breathing ice down his neck.

"Help me." It growled, its voice dripping with a desperate hunger.

Zachary didn't even get to scream.

Flashback - Countdown Stage 2 - Shadows

Lana Watkins

Lana Watkins was furious. This was supposed to be her time to mend her relationship with her on-again off-again boyfriend, James Sutton. But James had gone off snowboarding with some group of men the very first day they had gotten here. Worse yet, he hadn't come back! His last text said he was partying it up on some cabin nearby with the other guys.

She was absolutely going to break up with him for this. Sitting in the Alto Hotel lobby, she listlessly browsed her phone to keep herself occupied. She hated skiing but had let herself be talked into it to spend more time with James. Now that he wasn't here there was nothing left for her to do. With a frustrated sigh she kept scrolling through her latest posts where she pretended to be having a good time for her friends back home to see if anyone else had commented. But she was interrupted when a call caused a familiar name popped up on her screen: James.

She thought about hanging up the call but instead bit down her frustration and answered the phone. "You better have a damn good excuse for why you haven't said a word to me this entire trip." She said angrily, glaring at a stain on the table in front of her. If she squinted hard enough, it reminded her of his stupid face.

"H-Help me..." The voice was haggard, raspy, but undeniably James. There was pain in his voice and Lana felt her rage disappear instantly. "W-What? James? Where are you?" Standing up, she walked towards the front door of the hotel. The phone call was scratchy and she needed better reception. "James, where are you?!"

"The woods... Near the ski lift. Help...." His voice was tired and Lana threw caution to the wind. She could break up with him later. She didn't want him dead! Lana ran out into the woods just as night fell.

Flashback - Countdown Stage 3 - Sunset

Olivia Reed

Olivia Reed had had enough of waiting. Grabbing her husbands double-barreled shotgun, she loaded it with two shells and grimaced. If the police weren't going to investigate, then she would. The lodge just simply lacked the warmth it once held with Zachary gone and she couldn't take it anymore. They had always joked about what the other would do when one died before the other. But she hadn't thought she'd have to grapple with the reality of that question so soon. Taking a deep breath she began to head towards the doorway. A snowstorm was rolling in and she needed to be done and back before it hit properly.

Knock Knock. The front door to her small cabin rattled in its frame as someone knocked on the door. "Hello?" She called out, still holding the shotgun. She felt her body freeze up on the spot - suddenly heading out into the cold didn't seem like such a bright idea. But there was no answer. Just a simple knock at the door again. Knock Knock.

Cradling the shotgun against her chest, Olivia slowly walks over to the window near their front door. Something was wrong, she could feel it.

When she moved the drapes aside that covered the window she saw a pair of large, red eyes staring back at her with a feral hunger. A massive creature stood in front of her window, its hand stretched long to knock on her doorway - as if it knew she would check her window instead of opening the doorway. Unable to bite back the scream of terror, Olivia snaps the shotgun in front of her, falling backward as the creature smashes through the window.

The first blast hit its mark. But the creature didn't even flinch. It knocked the shotgun away with a strength that caused her arm to snap in half. With a scream of pain, she tried to struggle away. But its massive hand closed in on her.

Flashback - Countdown Stage 4 - Dusk

???

Hunger. All it had ever known was hunger. All it would ever know is hunger. The fight with that damn werewolf had weakened it but it had been waiting so so so so so long for a proper meal. Soon it would feast on all of the souls in the town below. Then, maybe, its hunger would be sated. It grasped the legs of two tourists that had foolishly opened the door to the hotel when it had knocked. It remembered them speaking like someone had gotten stuck outside.

Foolish humans. Only fit to be food. Still, it needed these two humans. For food. But not for it. The true feast would only happen when the others were ready.

Flashback - Countdown Stage 5 - Nightfall

Lana Watkins

Lana had been stuck here for days. No food. No water. She was hungry. So very, very hungry. The creature had grabbed her and threw her into a pit somewhere dark and cold. She wasn't sure she'd survive, especially since she could see her extremities had begun to succumb to frostbite. If she got some food. Maybe, just maybe, she could survive. But was anyone even coming for her? Did anyone even know she was missing? A dry sob got stuck in her throat.

But the sound of something large shuffling above her caused terror to grip her anew. The creature that had captured her had returned. It left frequently and she knew that last time it returned she brought someone new with them. This time it sounded like more people had been captured. She waited with bated breath for it to pass.

But the slow dragging sounds stopped directly above her pit. Terrified, weak, and unable to do anything but watch, Lana saw the monstrous deer skull peek over its pit. After verifying she was still there, there was a ripping sound and a scream. Then, suddenly, a body drops down into the pit next to her. She can see it was once a tourist.

"You are hungry..?" The creature hissed in an eerily human voice above her.

"Then... Eat." The creature retreated from her pit, dragging something else away from her - probably another body.

Horrified, Lana looked down at the body in front of her. Her hunger pains cramped up anew. She couldn't, could she? She closed her eyes, willing her stomach pains to subside.

But when she opened her eyes, all she saw was meat.

Flashback - Countdown Stage 6 - Midnight

Dayton Gillem

Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck. What the fuck?! How the fuck?! So many questions ran through his mind as he ran full sprint down the icy slopes leading away from Alto Ski Resort. His breath was labored and he could still hear the screams behind him. But there was no way he could deal with that! No way in hell! Fuck that! His breath caught in his throat and he knew it would be so much easier to transform into a werewolf, but he held back. He'd never hear the end of it. If he got away that was.
