So You Want To Make A Headmate
Disclaimer
This guide is a work-in-progress and as such, is not very detailed. More may be added in the future.
Core Assumptions
This guide assumes that:
- You know what "headmate," "system," and "front" mean (if not, see More Than One).
- You can imagine having a conversation with someone.
Disclaimers
Before creating a headmate, consider all of this. This isn't a decision to be made lightly.
- You're creating a whole ass person.
This is a guide on how to create a thinking, sentient entity within your head. This is a commitment. - They might not be who you want them to be.
This is a guide to making a person, not making your dream friend/partner/etc. - They might not like you.
They're likely not going to ruin your life on a whim, but things won't be all roses and sunshine either. - You might not like them.
See above point. Keep in mind, though, that by default the power dynamic will be weighted towards you. Be aware of that. Don't abuse it. - They might feel uncomfortable in your body if they don't look like you.
Being in a body that looks nothing like you ranges from mildly annoying to extremely uncomfortable. - They might want people to know they exist.
Maybe they don't like being treated as you, or just want people to know they exist. - They might want to front for long periods of time.
Existing and having a body is fun, and your headspace probably won't be a perfect simulation of life outside. - They might want to do things you don't feel like doing.
They probably won't go around committing crimes, but they might have different hobbies than you and want to do things they enjoy. - They'll likely exist for most of your life.
There is no ethical way to non-consensually get rid of a sentient being. Headmates might go dormant for periods of time, but it's unlikely that they'll just disappear. - It's possible to make more headmates by accident once you start.
This isn't likely, but it's still something to be aware of. - If you wouldn't have a kid for X reason, don't create headmates for X reason.
You're creating a person. I know I've said this already, but this isn't something you should do on a whim. Think long and hard before doing this. - Creating headmates will not magically improve your mental health.
(Or memory, multitasking skills, hand-eye coordination, ability to visualize, motivation, etc.) Sometimes it can, but there are much easier, quicker, and less complicated ways to do it.
Creating Headmates: Our Method
First of all, if you skipped the last section, that's understandable. But please at least skim it. It helps to know what you're getting into. If you continue without thinking this through, don't blame us.
First of all, imagine that there's an entity in your mind. Feel free to give them a placeholder name or appearance if that makes things easier, but don't pressure them to keep it. Talk to them, treating them as sentient. You can talk back, taking their role in the conversation, but this might make it harder to tell when they become independent. Continue talking to them. If you get a strange sensation, pay attention to it. In general, assume sentience.
More Resources
If you want to develop them more, there's a lot of guides online, like tulpa.info, tulpa.io or tulpanomicon.guide. (Disclaimer: we personally do not use tulpa terminology, but we recognize that these are helpful resources regardless of the words they use.)
