What to Do Following a Tooth Extraction Procedure
The aftermath of a tooth extraction can painful and uncomfortable. It requires plenty of care. However, there are things you can do early on to fast track your healing and help you get better in no time.
Manage bleeding
Dentists will place a gauze on the area where tooth was extracted. Bite this with enough pressure to keep it in place. Blood clot will gradually build up in the tooth socket. In case of excessive bleeding, use a fresh tea bag in lieu of a gauze and bite on it. Tea has tannic acid that facilitates blood clotting. Trap the gauze or tea bag in between your teeth until you bleed no more. It is normal to experience some degree of bleeding within a day since extraction.
Alleviate pain
Your Weston Creek dentist may prescribe medicine such as paracetamol or similar pain killers to dull the ache. Pain medicine makes you feel drowsy, so avoid intake if you have to drive home. Where necessary, take over-the-counter medicine instead.
Minimise swelling
There will often be swelling along the extraction site. Put an ice pack on the area of your cheek where the swelling is palpable. Ice packs are available for purchase on pharmacies, but if you don't have one, putting ice cubes inside a plastic bag wrapped with a small towel can be a good alternative. For 10 minutes or so, press the ice pack on the swollen area. Repeat until you feel the swelling shrink. Expect slight bruising on your face, but this is normal and will eventually subside.
Rest well
Do not move around too much within 24 hours following an extraction. Get as much rest as you can during the day and sleep early. Prop a pillow under your head for some elevation and avoid sleeping flat on your back or stomach.
Eat healthy
Other things you can do to help your mouth heal is consume soft and healthy foods. Hydrate with water and non-alcoholic or non-soda liquids like fruit juice or smoothies.
Gentle brushing
Be careful when brushing around the extraction site. Use mild toothpaste and brush gently. Dentists might dissuade you from using toothpaste as it may affect blood clotting. Follow this advice if you can.
Oral Hygiene
Always keep the extraction site clean. Gently rinse your mouth half a day after your extraction procedure. Gargle using a teaspoon of salt in warm water but consult your dentist first before you do so.
