some notes:
going to try to update this every day, hopefully the fear of missing an entry will motivate me to practice on the day s im feeling lazy/not in the mood. at the very very least attempting to play a few songs is enough to write down and apparently even practicing half an hour a day makes ya better so. yaknow. THAT BEING SAID, the first few will probably be pretty detailed but after that dont expect to hear more than "practiced. went okay. liked how this went. ok bye" because i do not think i will be able to come up with brand new fresh critiques and goals and elarning strategies etc. EVERY SINGLE DAY. there will also be some days where i just wont be able to practice which is why im saying "day ---" and then the date instead of just like. the date. i dunno man its my thing ill do whatever the fuck i want its not like this is gona be read by anyone anyways
day 1: sept 3rd 2025
songs played: undone (the sweater song), say it aint so, grolandic edit, buddy holly
for a first ever attempt, i got a hang of holding a basic beat pretty early. starting out im mostly trying to get a hang of the hi hat, snare, and bass, because if im struggling with that, throwing other things into the mix won't help. however, my friend sent me a playlist of good beginner drummings (a lot of weezer), and they mostly focus on that anyways, which is helpful!
im going to try to practice rudiments every day too. i have discovered that the amount of control between my left and right hands are EXTREMELY unbalanced, and while using a stick in my right hand feels like ive been doing it all my life, holding one in my left feels far more unnatural. im sure this issue will get better over time though.
day 2: sept 4th 2025
songs played: undone (the sweater song), 1979, song 2, clint eastwood, o green world
i didnt have much time to practice today cus i got up late and had to eat and go to work 💔 at the very least, ive found that practicing rudiments after playing a song or two works much better, so i can create sort of a routine for every time i practice. i'm going to set up some goals for specific songs i want to master and specific rudiments to focus on. ill do that another day though
day 3: sept 5th 2025
songs played: buddy holly, song 2
song 2 is so fun to play oh my lord. a little fast compared to the others but i think im getting a hang of it. i also took a video of myself playing buddy holly, im gonna try and film periodically so i can watch how i progress i think. not super often though like maybe every two weeks or month or something idk
day 4: sept 6th 2025
songs "played": song 2
bad news: i didnt have ANY chance to play today, as i was not at home until 2am when i went to bed 💔 good news: practicing in my head/ just with my feet and tapping on the counter at work is SO fun. and actually helpful especialluy with limb independence! i mean im already very tappy at work anyways so my coworkers didnt think it was THAT abnormal lol
day 5: sept 7th 2025
songs played: dreams, the sweater song, whatsername, walkin on the sun, buddy holly, song 2
todays mission was to try and get clone hero set up...and i succeeded :33 using the actual drumset as a controller was so cool but i think i am not even advanced enough to really try using it as a tool for learning yet (or at least, i need to get better at the game itself and recognizing where to send my hand for each symbol). i will say, the drumless-practicing DID pay off, as i had a better grip of song 2 than i did when i played it before. i will be taking advantage of this and practicing like every shift now heehee
day 6: sept 8th 2025
songs played: dreams, beetlebum, walkin on the sun, heart shaped box, the less i know the better, song 2
i feel like songs "played" would work better as songs "attempted" or maybe songs "stumbled through" but whatever. ive been kind of just shuffling my playlist and attempting to play whatever sounds fun by listening to it over a few times, attempting different parts of it while i play. i do think i need to moreso a) zero in on like. a few specific songs to really get good at before hopping around too much (kinda doing that with song 2 and buddy holly but whatever) and i also REALLY need to watch some videos of people playing. im terrified im like doing it wrong this whole time so i want to at least watch somebody drum the songs ive been dong most and track their movements. why the hell havent i done that yet actually i should go doo that right NOW!!!!
day 7: sept 9th 2025
songs played: song 2, song 2, oh and song 2 again also song 2 i think
this song is so fun and im actually properly getting a hang of it and its AWESOME. i did watch a guy do a tutorial of sorts and he plays it a little differently than i do, so im trying to incorporate the way he does it into the way that ive been doing it. turns out, im not good enough to just listen and identify which parts of the drum are being played (which is. how ive been trying to learn songs) so from now on!!!!! videos are key!!!! im also going to greys today and ill get to try out a better kit (and get some pointers!) which im excited for
day 8: sept 11th 2023
songs played: song 2, buddy holly
i was a bit worried that id get frustrated when i wasnt super great from the getgo, and eventually give up, but i find myself getting the craving to play anytime im out of the house/everytime i think about it which is a wonderful sign! watched a vid for buddy holly and its way different (and more fun) than what ive been doing so im learning that too. also tried practicing rudiments with a metronome today (i dont know why i wasnt before???) so ill have to get used to that.
