Tootootoot!
If you've been looking for a guide to Mastodon, Fediverse and it's communities - here is my choice I want to share with you. Four texts which (in my opinion) do the job more than good. Just four, because less is more and it's good to keep things simple. Four is way more than enough. Guides are written with empathy and care for new and lost users. I'm sure that inside you'll will find answers for all your questions.
THANKS TO THE AUTHORS
It's good to know, that these texts are written by people from Mastodon communities - volountarely; having the new users in mind. Nobody paid anything for this. That's why guides are so good. Totally opposite than... somewhere else, let's say. High five for that - and lot of respect.
Appreciate it, spread it, share it!
First is a great piece from Christa. Her guide for friends considering Mastodon is my favourite starter, mostly because it's written dead simple, just like a message from a good friend.
Second is written by Danielle. Article is called Everything I know about Mastodon and it's great, because it takes the Twitter user point of view. So if it's you - this piece could be very useful.
Third is a... backup. I really doubt, but If you still have questions - after this one you should be completely satisfied. Guide by Esdin has a clear structure - while still not being too technical-oriented. Cherry on the cake, to be sure that you have it all set and ready to go.
Fourth. is something... different. You could notice already, that Mastodon is different. Very much because It's really not about users or accounts. It's about a community and people. It has also a quite long tradition, and is considered as a safe-space for many.
This one is very important, though - because it's giving more humane insight of what's actually happened and going on. This is a point of view from a person, who is scared when he see thousands new accounts popping out just like that, hour after hour - more and more. Hugh has this tought, about losing, showing a bit of history in his essay - and how non-binary is this what's around us. I hope that this piece could help you understand better both people and processes. Written with rational amount of anger and empathy - it's not a rant, rather open hand - check it out.
And... yeah, that's it.
In my opinion it's everything you should know to start having a good time, or even more. From here you can go just wherever you want. Jump into Fediverse and be open for new things. The tools are here - it's up to you, how (and if) you will use them. There is also a possibility that maybe it's not for you and iritates you too much. Well, that's also ok! Sea is big and full of adventures. But if so, I'll have just one advice from myself, if allowed - try to not get screwed on the road by these who want your bucks as payment for something you own from the very beginning.
Post scriptum - of course!
If you are interested in digging deeper and want look for more... there's this sentence to catch on:
Protocols, not platforms.
It's something what could eventually come back to you. It's a backend.
Be aware, love.
PPS. If I forgot to make it clear enough - everything above is only my opinion - my own point of view about what could be important. And that's it, nothing more than that.
PPPS. My English is not so good, I know. If someone would want to help & correct my typos or grammar in that piece, please catch me here - I will give you a edit code for this pastebin. Thanks!
