How do I join?

Cis allies

This is a trans-only group. Your support is appreciated and you are encouraged to spread Tracha to your trans friends! Trans people want a trans-only safe space, no hard feelings.

You should click Static Badge, and it will take you to your client's page. If not, just use the following address in the client of your choice: #tracha-space:transfem.dev. Once you are in the Space, you can join our rooms, keep reading so you see more details about them!

Tracha rooms

We have more than one room available! It's your choice if you want to join them all or not, but it's recommended! We recommend using our Tracha Space to join them. A space is a collection of rooms, which makes it easier for you to see them in your client, or see if there are new rooms and such. Our space is Static Badge. You will be able to join our other rooms from the space while having them grouped in your favorite client.

if you don't want to join the Space, or your client doesn't support it, the rooms we have are the following:

  • Tracha (the main room): Static Badge
  • Tracha Aux (for when main Tracha is too busy): Static Badge
  • Tracha Vent (for when you have CW heavy topics to discuss): Static Badge
  • Tracha Activities (game nights, movies, book clubs, etc): Static Badge

What is Tracha?

Tracha is a leftist trans only Matrix group aimed at being the go-to hangout for trans people online. While many forum-like trans focused places exist, Tracha aims to be an instant messaging styled group, while rejecting privacy invasive platforms that can put trans peoples' lives in peril, such as Discord, which also collaborate with law enforcement. Tracha wants to be a safer, better space for trans people.

Tracha is affiliated with Hexbear's c/traa community. In short, Hexbear is a leftist, queer majority community website found on the Fediverse. It runs Lemmy, an open source software that is designed to create an alternative to reddit. Hexbear itself is run by a majority trans and queer admin and moderator team. /c/traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns is one of the communities on Hexbear, designed to be used for trans users. The content on traa is mostly memes, comics, and thousands of comments by trans Hexbear users. However, since the trans community on the fediverse is still growing, various serious content is also posted to traa.

Why should I join?

Tracha has many members (130+ as of writing this), and is active on a daily basis, although mostly on US time (so if you are from another timezone join too to make it more active!). You are sure to have a good time no matter where you are from.

Tracha is cozier than your traditional forum, while enjoying the same good time with your leftist comrades.

What is Matrix?

Matrix is basically the email of messaging. It's an open protocol, with various homeservers (the part after @ in your username) where you can sign up and where your data lives. You can talk to other people registered on other homeservers, for example @sarah:envs.net can talk to @melina:matrix.org.

There are various Matrix interfaces, they are called clients. The most used one is Element, as usually it's the most polished one, but there are many alternatives such as FluffyChat and Cinny which support custom emotes.

Channels in Matrix are called rooms. Rooms can be direct messages to someone, groups, or open groups like Tracha.

Matrix can replace apps such as Discord, while being much safer and private, which is important for any leftist or trans person, because it uses end-to-end encryption (E2EE).

Tutorials

How to add pronouns to your name

The way of adding pronouns to your username is based on your client of choice, so it may vary. Generally, there are two types of names on Matrix, your display name, which is shown everywhere, and your room nickname, which can be different in each room. Your display name and room nickname can be different from your Matrix ID (MXID) which is @youruser:yourhomeserver.net.

Typically, you want to go to your account settings and change your display name to include the pronouns of your choice. If you want them only in this room, for clients such as Element or Cinny, you should type in this room's chatbox /myroomnick <yournick> where <yournick> is your updated nick like in the below example:

/myroomnick rainn (she/her)

How to use spoilers

Each client implements spoilering differently. For example, to spoiler with Element, you should type /spoiler message. FluffyChat and Cinny implement spoilering like so: || message ||. If you use another client, check its respective documentation on spoilering. Some clients allow you to set a CW on the spoiler that's observable if you hover on the spoiler, Element has this, but it's in beta.

How to use the custom emotes

Tracha has many custom emotes from Hexbear, in due time it may expand. If you want to use them you need to use a custom emote compatible client such as FluffyChat or Cinny. Then just look in your emote picker, you should see a Traa pack there. Cinny supports setting them globally if you want to use them with your friends!

How to use Markdown

Markdown is the markup language this document is written in! Click edit on the bottom of this page and take a peek.

Many markdown interpreters implement Markdown differently, but the most used one is CommonMark. Discord does their own Markdown implementation if you come from there, you will see generally they are similar, but many can have differences in their implementation. If you want more Markdown implementation ideas, you can check Rentry's out too.

How to use Matrix

You should check out the Matrix Foundation's great primer on matrix and if you use Element you should also check their user guide.

Enabling Secure Backup

If you have an account, you likely want to log in on multiple devices. You should first enable Secure Backup in the Security & Privacy section, which allows you to not lose your encryption keys on new devices. It is highly recommended if you want to access chat history. Save the backup key somewhere secure, like a password manager.

Verifying your session

Matrix shares encryption keys with verified sessions, so someone that has gotten into your account cannot read your message history. You can verify a session by either verifying it with a secondary device where you are logged in, or use your Secure Backup key, as shown above. Verifying your sessions is recommended to reduce decryption errors and show others that you haven't been compromised.

My message isn't decrypting!

If others are telling you that your messages aren't decrypting for them try typing /discardsession and reload your client, it should fix the issue! Make sure your sessions are verified, too.

Spreading the word

Help Tracha become the biggest trans leftist groupchat out there! Share this document around trans places you know and bring your friends. This document can easily be shared with the following link: https://rentry.co/tracha, short and memorable. Don't let other trans people use insecure means of communication!
