But Behind the Trees
A Special Addition to Right Tree Farm
The three of you settle into your seats in the car, your father in the passenger seat, your son behind the passenger seat. The car glides away from the house and down the street while your father critiques your every move.
You want to suggest returning to the house so that he can drive his non-existent vehicle, but you consider the memory of your mother, his beloved wife. Truly, she would not want any arguments.
"I'm working on it," you finally tell him, somewhat sweetly. "Give me another twenty years or so, I'll eventually meet your standards."
"If any of us live that long," he grumbles back.
Your son pipes up. "What about me, gramp? I'll only be 30 in twenty years."
You shrug off your father's negativity. You desperately want to gush, "That's the Christmas spirit, dad!"
But no.
A large sign catches your attention. You can't help but smile.
"Is that the sign there?"
You glance over and catch your father's brief smile.
"That's it. Right Tree Farm. Your mother's favorite place for Christmas. We're almost there."
"A tree farm? Why do they have to farm trees?"
Your father explains the idea with unexpected patience. You almost want to hug him until he suggests that he might buy a tree for your house. You remind him that live trees are a no-go and he begins to argue.
