He wasn't always known as Adam. Once, he was just a man, one gifted with above average tolerance for cybernetic enhancement. 25 year old Jerome Frederickson, a young nobody from farm country and cow town underneath a big, clear sky, took up the hero's mantle after the Association wasn't able to protect his younger sister from a villain-sparked house fire while he was away at college.
Jerome knew he wasn't much of a fighter, so he did the next best thing. The family had received a good bit of money from the Association as apology (hush money, though Jerome never knew it) for his sister's death, and he eagerly sought out some of the brighter minds at his school who had access to cutting-edge cybernetics. Or at least, he thought they were advanced. Nevertheless they helped get him started, and after graduating Jerome went full time into the hero business, developing a modest presence in his home state.
Over time, Jerome started specializing more, adding new upgrades to himself, rising slowly but steadily up the ranks, and developing particular skill at putting out fires with speed and precision no human firefighter could match. He got tough, flexible, and fast, with a decisive mindset and a mental adaptability that started to draw attention from the higher echelons of the Association and beyond it. The upgrades kept coming, and Jerome by this point was well over half cyborg.
Eventually, pure metal alone wasn't cutting it. Jerome knew he could do more, and started dabbling in biological enhancement as well. The balanced approach served him well, and after his fourth year with the Association, he was a one-man arsenal of weaponry, firefighting, medical aid, anything that was needed in a given situation. He received accolades from civilian and hero organizations alike, and his future was bright. Thanks to all the extra energy from his bionics and biologics, Jerome no longer even needed to sleep very much. With all the extra time on his hands he took freelance work, working with groups beyond the Hero Association to try and do even more good, often internationally.
This was a bad idea.
Jerome had forgotten that everything which made him effective, was also valuable. He never knew who exactly got the drop on him, or how. He never found out what tipped off his attackers before his arrival. He didn't retain much of anything, all things considered. What is known is fragmentary. A terrorist organization still lurking in the shadows to this day attacked Jerome with an electromagnetic pulse weapon, along with a neurotoxin finisher to attack him from all angles. They salvaged him, kept him in a stupor, and tore him apart in order to gather as much data on his enhancements as they could for sale to other interested parties. It is unclear if the Hero Association knew of Jerome's capture, but as he was operating under a different organization during that mission, they were under no obligation to rescue him. And did not.
For several years, Jerome's husk was used as training material for a variety of different terrorists, vigilantes, mercenaries, and anyone who wanted to pay for the service. Somewhere along the way, he was brought back into combat shape, released from the mind-fogger drugs for the first time. Now he was in service to The Blood Prophet, an entity still unknown to the Hero Association to this day. Brainwashed to an extraordinary extent, Jerome acted as bodyguard and enforcer to this cryptic would-be religious idol, killing whoever and whatever his master desired. It was during this time Jerome was first labeled as a "Villain", and his connection to the hero he once was remained obscured by the sheer amount of rebuilding he'd been put through.
At some point though... God Fucked Up.
Whatever happened, Jerome has never told to a single soul. One upgrade too many forced upon him, perhaps. Something more pervasive than the rest, more capable of true evolutionary leaps. It is believed there were no survivors, save for the possibility of The Blood Prophet having escaped alive, at the cost of his entire congregation. Jerome was free. Empty. Every cell in his body, every nut, bolt and screw had been mutated and re-engineered a hundred times by a hundred mad scientists. Eventually he had simply... become more than the sum of his parts. He looked human again. A nearly perfect fusion of flesh and steel. He took the name "Adam", and began a relentless search for information about what had befallen him.
Adam didn't discover his own past. He did discover some of the corruption within the Hero Association. Eventually, he stopped caring so much what had happened to his own body, and more about preventing it from happening to anyone else. Viewing almost everyone with any form of superpower or authority as irredeemable, he began indiscriminately slaughtering the empowered wherever and whenever he could. And he was pretty damn good at it.
Adam's fighting style is relentless and brutal, a rare mix of speed and power not often seen in this world. He likes to feign being a low-IQ musclehead when starting fights, lulling the enemy into a false sense of complacency before exploding into hyper-aggressive grabs, punches, feints and dashes. He's not perfect, not yet. But for those few who have clashed with him and lived (or even won), they know he's not far off. It's unlikely Adam can die of old age anymore, so his potential for future growth both in body, upgrades and technique is extremely high.
Worst of all, he knows when to go to ground, and how to play dead.
