What Are the Different Types of Codes and How Do They Work?

Transponder Codes

When a transponder is interrogated, it sends a signal encoded with an eight-digit code. This signal, called a SQUAWK Code, is used to identify aircraft on radar screens. It can also be used to transmit an exact message to the air traffic control system in an emergency situation or to notify controllers of changing weather conditions. Squawk codes are often used to communicate with ATC in situations where the pilot is unable to talk on the radio and are very important for safe flying.

Every aircraft is equipped with a transponder that responds to radar probes by identifying a code. This allows ATC to locate an aircraft in a crowd of screens.
