Egawa Taro Relationship Chart

The Village

Collectivist --|--------- Individualist “I’m not a hero, but…” The factory hammered the cog in a machine dynamic into Taro’s consciousness pretty effectively, and Japan already has a culture heavily influenced by the ideals of honor and duty. Taro believes that the village lives or dies by its ability to work together, and if it came down to it he’d take on some big risks for the sake of the group. His loyalty falls just short of actively leaping to sacrifice himself for others. He would need to know, or at least believe in, a chance of survival to take any ‘heroic’ leap.

Players

Necrolord Sephidrac

Rivalry --------|--- Friendship ”Some of the others seem like they were just waiting to get isekai’d into another world and they’re living it up, but it’s tough for guys like Sephi and I. I respect that he’s trying his best.” Platonic --|--------- Romantic ”Traps aren’t gay, right? Just kidding. I’m not even sure if he’s actually an adult.” As a fellow normie, Taro views Sephidrac as a lot like himself, just not as used to this genre of video game. These being avatars, Taro isn’t sure how old some of the players are, so he suspects Sephidrac might be a kid or a high schooler due to how he acts. He views Sephi a bit like a younger brother or nephew, someone to look after and help teach the ways of the world.

If Sephi were revealed to be an older dude, the romance rating would plummet back to zero, but if he were actually around Taro’s age he would entertain the thought for all of five minutes before deciding that no, traps are gay, and he actually is straight. Now, if you then got him really drunk…

Kimiko Yuki/Yaofan

Rivalry ------|----- Friendship ”A lot of days it feels like she was born here. Then I catch her slacking off on her mining shift, again…” Platonic -----|------ Romantic ”I guess you could do worse, if we had to populate the world or something?” Taro looks up to the veterans. Something about the easy way they carry themselves in the World makes them feel untouchable, like the real heroes of the village. Watching Yaofan laze about any chance she gets reminds him that even heroes can have flaws, but he has to admit that the amount she does when she actually works probably makes up the difference.

Since they’re both from Japan with obvious accents, and Taro usually goes by his real name, they’re the most likely to have discussed where they live. Taro might know her real name if she’s willing to share it. At the very least, he would have asked about it and tried to connect socially. Taro isn’t particularly attracted to her, but he doesn’t find her unattractive either. If the village started trying to pair people up for Fire Emblem eugenics, he wouldn’t complain about being handed the Yaofan slip.

Liam Cooke/Lovxl (Not a Support 3)

Rivalry ------|----- Friendship ”I can’t believe I’m living in the same village as this guy. He’s, like, a Youtuber! He’s a celebrity!” Platonic |----------- Romantic ”He’s Lovxl the 3rd, dude.” Back on Earth, Taro was actually a big fan of Liam’s videos. The minimal editing and casual delivery of all of Lovxl’s stunts made the whole thing feel stylized, and he views Liam as a real life celebrity. At least, a microcelebrity as far as the game is concerned. Taro’s one of the viewers to consider Liam a pro speedrunner and legitimate exploit-explorer and not a cheater, since Taro doesn’t get intense about video games or treat them like serious business.

Between the celebrity and veteran reputations, Taro has a hard time engaging or interacting with Liam. It’s a parasocial anxiety, a fear of meeting your heroes and learning they’re just people, and maybe they’re not good people, or maybe they are? Every time they interact, Taro overthinks himself in circles about it.

Mio/strawberrycake0923

Rivalry -------|---- Friendship ”She's pretty cool, got a small social battery, but she's more approachable and talkative than Yaofan.” Platonic ----|------- Romantic ”I'm not really into the gothic lolita aesthetic, but maybe she's cute IRL? ...I wonder if our avatars will age? Ohshit, what's happening to our bodies back in-" Even though he's not exactly a veteran, Taro tries to mentor Mio in the game mechanics as one of the newest players to get pulled into the new world. It's nice to have someone to talk to in fluent Japanese who's a little more conversational with Yaofan, but Taro takes care not to strain her social battery. He's learned to tell when she clams up and would rather the interaction be over. Not too unusual, he had a few classmates like that back in school.

It's obvious enough from talking to her that Mio's older and pretty smart about worldly stuff, like how she avoids giving away too many details from real life. Taro is glad that she still has hope about getting home, but worries how she might take it if that becomes impossible.

Her avatar makes it hard to take her seriously as an adult, though. It looks more at home in a themed teahouse than a fantasy village. Taro never bothered with the anachronistic cosmetics shops himself, but that's because the basic leather armor and clothing models already looked pretty cool.

Nagisa Ito/Good Things Come

Rivalry ---------|-- Friendship "Heh, it does feel kind of nice when he calls me his Little Big Bro.” Platonic |----------- Romantic ”That's a little boy." For some of the group, the new world really is a second lease on life. Taro is conflicted, glad to see Ito so happy just to be here, but worried about the psychological bloodlust that his class might bring with it. He takes the given title of Big Bro very seriously, seeing it as his responsibility to look after Ito and help guide the kid. As a bonus, Taro has another person to speak fluent Japanese with.

With how Ito talks, Taro assumes he was equally young in the real world, which increases his protective instincts. Consequently, it also means zero romantic interest.

NPCs

Arthur Wode

Rivalry ------|----- Friendship ”The way he talks is a little off-putting. It’s like dealing with the autistic kid in class.” Platonic |----------- Romantic ”He’s a dude.” Around the former NPCs, Taro can be a little awkward, and he leans into some people-pleaser tendencies out of the fear that they might ‘snap’ if they figure out they’re not really people. Are they really people? Do they have a soul? Do people have souls? Taro doesn’t know the answers to these questions, and frankly they hurt his poor little cog brain a little bit. Arthur is worse than the other NPCs in some ways, because he’s human. It causes Taro’s perception of him to edge into the uncanny valley.

Taro is friendly towards Arthur, but he probably wouldn’t call Arthur a friend. It’s more like the casual politeness one gives a competent coworker.

Fathoms/Fifi

Rivalry -------|---- Friendship ”Her enthusiasm is infectious. It’s hard not to get caught up in it, you know? Oh, haha, I made a fishing pun by accident.” Platonic -----|------ Romantic ”How would that even work?” Being so obviously inhuman actually makes it easier for Taro to accept Fifi. She doesn’t fall has hard into the uncanny valley as Arthur, whose human appearance and inhuman mannerisms come off as unsettling. He still worries about how she might take the news of being an NPC, though.

In the event that Fathoms was clued in to her nature and started to go into her existential spiral, Taro would probably reach out to talk to her about it, since he’d be thinking through a lot of the same questions about NPChood and personhood. Taro isn’t sure what to make of fish girls, but if an emotional connection developed in that direction he wouldn’t reject the idea of romance outright.

Advisors

Peredolia

Rivalry -----|------ Friendship ”He’s okay. I’ll pick him over the alternative every time.” Platonic |----------- Romantic ”He's a dude, I think?” The design and personality of Taro's active Advisor make him nervous. The practical applications of having an Advisor are hard to pass up on, though, and Taro doesn't want to switch back to Konsonmur. He uses the same people pleaser approach to dealing with Peredolia, trying to be lukewarm and polite, but out of all the NPCs Taro is the most nervous around him.

Konsonmur

Rivalry --|--------- Friendship ”Helpful my ass.” Platonic ---|-------- Romantic ”You’re telling me that’s a girl?” When Taro first started character creation, he chose Konsonmur as an advisor. He had to restart the game because he found her too annoying and racist. Especially after she made fun of him for picking a healer class the first time Taro thinks she’s childish and irritating, and he has her Advisor function disabled.

Taro also thinks she’s a boy. He fell for the reverse trap.
