The sash is an interior frame that is vertically moved either up or down in windows that open. This article will show you how to carry out a few simple repairs to the sash.
Weather Stripping
Wood window sashes add an elegant look to your home and, when properly maintained, they can last for a long time. They can, however, be damaged or degraded over time, due to exposure and normal wear. Thankfully, sash repair experts can restore your windows back to their original condition and keep them looking great for a longer period of time than replacement windows.
The first step to repair sash windows is to address weather stripping, which can be found on both the sash as well as the frame. It could cause drafts if worn out or loose. Begin by identifying the window brand and the manufacturer's date (etched on the glass's corners, or the aluminum spacers between panes). Take the sash off, and mark its width and height so you can find a replacement weather stripping that matches.
Then, take it off and set it on a work surface so you can access all four sides. If your sash was double-hung, take out the ropes and weights that should have fallen into the pocket inside the jamb lining. After removing the sash with the utility knife, you can remove the weather stripping from the old sash by hand or using a putty knife.
Once the sash is clear it is time to replace the parting stops. These are long pieces that separate the sashes. Pam likes to replace them with standard 1/2-inch by 3/4-inch window trim from the lumberyard. However, you can also use a piece of scrap wood.
After removing the stopper for the parting and trimming it to length after which, apply a thin layer of glazing compound over the bottom of the sash. Smooth the compound using a putty tool, and let it dry at least a day. When it's completely dried and dried, apply a second coat of acrylic latex paint. This will help protect the putty and give your sash a fresh appearance.
Sash Hardware
The hardware that supports windows sashes can become worn out over time and use. This can result in the window or door that is difficult to open or close. Sash Weights
No matter if your window sash repair needs are to replace a damaged cord or just to keep your windows functioning and functional, replacing worn-out sash weights will improve sash operation and help reduce the energy cost. Sash weights are made of heavy iron or lead cylinders that are encased inside a concealed cavity, and are connected via ropes to the moveable window sash. A new sash cord will give you the ability to move the sash upwards and downwards and keep it in position when it is opened.
The first step in replacing cords for sash is to locate and take out the access panels located in the jambs. These are usually nailed or screwed in and must be removed or relocated. You may be able to use a hammer and chisel to prise them off but it's best to lay down dust sheets prior to beginning any work.
Once the access panel is removed, you can start working on the sash. Utilize a flat bar or chisel to pry the tiny partsing beads out of their grooves. It is essential to take your time, as these are often placed in a wedge or nail. If the sash remains in place, break the mortise and tenon joints free with a hammer or screwdriver and then remove each wood peg. The sash should be able to move around freely now, however it might require some lubrication to make it feel less stiff.
With the sash open With the sash in an open position, measure the sash chain or cord to extend from the pulley in the top of the jamb to the sash slot on the bottom. If you haven't purchased an upgrade kit to replace the old counterbalance system it's recommended to keep the original balancing weights in place. They're not expensive and easy to install if you buy them at architectural salvage stores.
