what is the warsaw uprising?
- the warsaw uprising (august 1 – october 2, 1944) was the largest single armed effort by any european resistance movement during ww2. led by the home army, it was a 63-day struggle to liberate warsaw from german occupation before the soviet red army could arrive and install a communist government
what was the goal?
- it was part of operation tempest. the poles wanted to be "hosts" in their own capital when the soviets arrived, asserting their independence.
what was the outcome?
- the soviet army stopped their advance on the east bank of the vistula river, watching from across the water while the germans crushed the uprising.
- when the home army finally surrendered, hitler ordered the total destruction of warsaw. about 85% of the city was leveled, and nearly 200,000 civilians and 16,000 resistance fighters lost their lives.
