Wa-Suta (わーすた; The World Standard) is the fourth iDOL Street group formed in 2015. The group is cat-themed, and their songs have a variety of genres that take place all over the world. The group's image is described as a digital age idol generation. They aim to impact the world, to spread "kawaii Japan idol" culture using social media and "real idol" activities, such as allowing video recording and photo taking at their lives.
History
Wasuta, stylized as the fourth idol group under Avex's iDOL Street label, was formed on March 29, 2015, with the aim of promoting Japanese kawaii culture globally through social media and live performances. The original lineup consisted of five members: Hazuki Sakamoto, Nanase Hirokawa, Miri Matsuda, Ririka Kodama, and Ruka Mishina, each assigned a distinct color to represent their personalities in the group's vibrant, cat-themed aesthetic. Early activities focused on building an online presence as a "digital native" group, leveraging platforms to connect with international fans while preparing for their musical debut. In 2015, they achieved early recognition by winning first place at the Indie Music Awards
The group's debut release came on October 5, 2015, with the limited-edition music card single Inu Neko. Seishun Massakari (いぬねこ。青春真っ盛り), featuring upbeat tracks that introduced their playful, youth-oriented sound blending J-pop with idol elements. This was followed by additional singles and promotional events, including participation in iDOL Street projects, which helped solidify their domestic fanbase. Building on this momentum, Wasuta released their first full-length album, The World Standard, on May 4, 2016, marking their major debut distributed worldwide across 110 countries via digital platforms. The album showcased a mix of genres, from energetic pop to whimsical tunes incorporating cat motifs, and included fan incentives like paper doll sets with physical copies, emphasizing their interactive idol image.
In 2017, Wasuta expanded into anime collaborations, aligning with their colorful, performative style. Their third single, Just be Yourself, released on April 19, 2017, served as the opening theme for the anime series Idol Time PriPara, a sequel to the popular PriPara franchise that aired on TV Tokyo from April to December. This tie-in marked their entry into anime music, with the song's empowering lyrics and dynamic choreography resonating with the series' themes of self-expression and idol aspirations. The collaboration boosted their visibility, leading to live performances at anime-related events and further integrations, such as additional tracks for PriPara projects during the period.
2018–2020: International activities and anniversaries.
In 2018, Wasuta expanded its international presence with performances abroad, beginning with an appearance at Japan Weekend Madrid in September, marking the group's first concerts in Spain. This event highlighted their growing appeal in Europe, where they performed a set of popular songs to enthusiastic audiences. Later that year, they also participated in collaborative stages, such as a special guest performance at Tokyo Idol Festival 2018 alongside acts from Japan Expo Paris. Additionally, Wasuta contributed the ending theme "Pretty☆Channel" to the anime series Kiratto Pri☆Chan, released on June 20, 2018, further enhancing their ties to the animation fandom.[8]
The group continued international outreach in 2019, returning for their third consecutive year at Japan Expo Thailand in Bangkok on January 26 and 27. Their set included hits like "Active Heart" and "Hypnosis Shower," drawing large crowds and reinforcing their status in Southeast Asia. That October, Wasuta held their first major free concert at Yoyogi Park's Outdoor Stage, performing to over 3,000 attendees and celebrating their growing popularity with a set featuring "Yuumei ni, Nyaru!!!!!". In 2020, despite global challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic, Wasuta performed at Japan Expo Thailand on February 1 and 2, delivering energetic shows with tracks such as "Platonic Girl" before travel restrictions intensified.
To mark their fifth anniversary since formation in 2015, Wasuta released their first compilation album, Wasuta BEST, on March 25, 2020. The album featured 14 remastered hits from their debut through 2019, including "Inu Neko. Seishun Massakari" and "Active Heart," alongside four new recordings like "Grapefruit Moon" and a bonus disc with 10 additional tracks selected by members and fans. This release served as a retrospective milestone, celebrating their evolution while introducing fresh material amid the anniversary festivities.
The fifth anniversary concert, originally planned as a live event at LINE CUBE SHIBUYA, was adapted into a worldwide livestream on March 28, 2020, due to pandemic-related cancellations. Titled "Wasuta 5th Anniversary Live The World Standard," the performance included a 20-song setlist spanning their career, from early anime ties to recent singles, viewed by fans globally and emphasizing themes of resilience and unity.
