It was going to rain.
Gilgamesh stared at his lover on their deathbed. How did this happen? How did their hair, the color of the Euphrates at sunrise, the shade of the leaves covered in morning dew, become so dull? How did the light fade from their pale green eyes? How did the color drain from their skin? How had their form grown so covered in fractures and blemishes that it rendered them nearly unrecognizable?
Never unrecognizable, never to Gilgamesh. He'd know his Enkidu anywhere.
The King of Heroes watched silently as Enkidu reached a shaky, crumbling hand to his front. Their movements were unsteady and erratic at best, but their determination was unmistakable. If they could not speak, they could write, even without their eyesight.
Take me outside, they traced on his stomach, the pads of their fingers smearing dirt on his skin. In reality, they could have written any number of things, since the characters they wrote were almost completely unintelligible, save for the word outside. But this was Gilgamesh, and his Enkidu. He knew what they wanted. He always knew. From the day he had befriended them, the two were permanently attuned to each other.
So Gilgamesh did what any sane (how could he call himself sane? How could anyone going through this call themselves sane?) person would do and said no, you're dying, my love. Stay inside, it will rain, I do not want you to disintegrate even faster. My love, my love, stay with me.
It was then that he learned Enkidu could still cry.
A single tear dragged across their cheek, moistening the clay of their face. Please. Gilgamesh did not need words, spoken or written, to understand.
It was challenging, but eventually, Gilgamesh managed to carefully lift Enkidu of the bed and carry them with the utmost gentleness, like one would a wife. And that was what they were, in a way only they could understand.
Gilgamesh started to walk, cautious not to jostle his lover. Fresh dread shot into his stomach with each slow footstep. At any minute, they could fall apart in his arms, and they would be gone foreverโ
Do not think of such things, he chided himself. He could not afford to mope around with Enkidu deteriorating like this. They wanted to go outside, rain or no rain, death or no death, and that was how it would be. It reminded Gilgamesh of his lions. When they grew old and weary, when their time was up, they would whine at his feet until he freed them of their captivity. It was the only gift he could give them, allowing them to spend their final moments where they belonged.
Enkidu was a creature of the wilderness, after all. Their instinct to return to their birthplace right before their death came as no surprise.

"Caster. Wait."
Gilgamesh halted, startling at Enkidu's tone. Instantly, he became more aware of his surroundings, memorizing the placement of buildings, lights, and potential routes in and out of the scene.
"We have company."
Enkidu turned slowly, staring intently at the roof of the building across the street from the two Servants.
Gilgamesh narrowed his eyes, following their gaze. A figure stood, alone, silhouetted against the city lights behind them. Their clothes, a long trench coat more suited for the modern era, flapped in the wind.
Four of the Servants were dead. That meant only one person could be standing on that roof.
"Saber," Gilgamesh drawled, "have you come to bow before the King?"
Saber did not reply to his taunts; he only grinned wickedly as he crouched and launched himself towards the two other Servants.
"Caster! Oh, you know not how long I have waited for this moment, where I will paint my blade in your blood! I will end you both!" Saber's manic cackles echoed through the air as he landed in front of them.
Enkidu tensed next to him, silently preparing for battle. This area of the city was deserted, and only the flickering streetlights would be witnesses to the upcoming clash.
The air grew thick with tension, weighing on Gilgamesh until he found it strangely hard to breathe. He wasn't at his peak physical condition, but Saber had killed Assassin and Archer by himself. Additionally, he assisted in the deaths of Rider and Berserker. It would be a difficult fight, even with Enkidu at his side.
