Chapter one

Callie woke up with a large yawn. She tried to stretch her sore limbs, only to realize her arms were chained to the wall behind her. Her eyes darted around the room frantically. Was she in some sort of room for little squids? Her knees rested on pink and green foam mats that connected like puzzle pieces. They covered half the room. The walls were littered with Squid Sisters posters and album covers from all the freshest bands Callie could think of. In a corner stood a large cage big enough to fit an adult inkling, and that’s all she needed to see before starting to really freak out.

Where was she? Where was Marie?! The last thing she remembered was falling asleep on her cousin’s couch. She must’ve needed that sleep, because how in the world hadn’t she woken up being taken to wherever the hell she was!? Was she squidnapped by an overzealous fan? Marie always warned her about creepy fans, but she didn't expect her warnings to hold any weight to them.

Suddenly, she heard a movement from behind the door. It was swift and light but rang in her ears. She wasn’t alone.

“Hello..?” She squeaked.

She noticed that there was a heavy collar around her neck. It was loose enough for her to breathe in but tight enough to choke her if she went into squid form. She started fidgeting until the dread growing in the pit of her stomach took control, and she shrieked as loud as she possibly could.

“HELP!” Callie called out, desperately tugging against her bounds. “LET ME GO!”

“Callie!” Marie quickly rushed in, the door violently swinging open.

“MARIE!” Her face lit up, “YOU’RE HERE TO SAVE ME!!!”

“Calm down!” Marie tried not to scream back, “This is just my guest room, relax.”

“OH, OKAY! Um, why exactly am I tied up?” Her voice quickly softened.

“You haven’t been taking care of yourself! It’s maddening. It’s still not safe out there.” Marie grimaced. “You’re too naïve. You’re going to get yourself hurt again.”

“I dunno about this..” She gently tugged on her restraints. This whole situation would likely be terrifying to most, but it was hard to still be scared knowing it was only her cousin. Marie always had a weird sense of humor, maybe this was a prank?

“Well it’s not really your choice now, is it? This is for your own good, Callie.” Marie said softly. She leaned down and brushed the girl’s hair out of her face. “I’ll give you some time to think while I make us some supper. Okay?”

“Um… Okay…” She has to trust that Marie wouldn’t do anything to hurt her.

“Good girl.” And with that, she turned around and left the room, closing the door on her way out. Callie let out a sigh she didn’t realize she was holding in.

It felt like hours, but it must’ve only been 15 minutes until she heard the door creak open, and Marie came in carrying a bowl of soup and some washcloths.

“Alright. I made you some seaweed stew.” Marie announced, ignoring Callie’s disgusted reaction. “Now open up.”

She opened her mouth, about to complain, and quickly swallowed the warm broth that was shoved in with a spoon. It had a familiar aftertaste, but wasn’t as bad as she thought it would be. Still pretty terrible, though.

“See? That wasn’t so hard.” Marie cooed.

“Blehh.” She stuck out her tongue.

“Listen, if you eat your dinner, I promise I’ll make you crabby cakes tomorrow.”

“Wait, I’ll still be h-” Callie was interrupted by another spoonful of the disgusting green stew. Forced to swallow, some of it dripped out of her mouth and down her chin. “Oops…”

“Here, let me get that for you.” Marie gently wiped the juices off her face with a cloth. Callie's face burned and she closed her eyes. Was Marie trying to embarrass her?

“Open up.”

She relented and opened her mouth. She might as well get this over with.

After a bunch more spoonfuls, her stomach had enough. “Mmm… No more.”

“Alright,” Marie wiped any mess off of her once more, “You ate most of it.”

“Thanks for the food… I guess?” She shrugged to the best of her ability.

“You’re welcome.”

“So… um… where do I sleep?” She looked around the room once more.

“You’ll sleep in your cage.” Marie said.

“You’re funny.” Callie let out a nervous laugh.

“I’m being serious.” Her cousin replied dryly.

“Oh.” She frowned. “I don’t understand… Did I do something wrong?

Marie sighed and placed her cool hand on her warm cheek. “No, you didn’t. You just need some extra help, that’s all.”

Callie felt insulted. She could take care of herself perfectly fine! Sure, she did get squidnapped that one time… But is it even considered squidnapping if it was by choice?

She quickly looked up at her cousin, trying to stop her train of thought, and studied her soft face. Marie’s usual aloof expression was replaced with one of genuine concern.

“I’m sorry.” That is all she could manage to say. For some reason, it was difficult for her to think.

“Don’t be. It’s not your fault.” Marie leaned closer and quickly kissed her on the lips.

Callie felt warm and fuzzy throughout her body. She wanted nothing more than to collapse onto her cousin and have her hold her close. “This is weird.”

“What do you mean?” She sounded hurt.

“I dunno,” Callie whined. “I just feel funny.”

“That’s okay. Let’s get you to bed. You’ll feel better after you sleep.” Marie got up and unlocked the restraints.

“Yeah… okay….” Callie said softly, “Thank you.”

“Come on, Callie. Be a good girl for me and get in, okay?” She helped her stand up and pulled her closer to the cage.

“I… I don't… wanna…” Callie tried taking a step back as she rubbed her sore wrists, but Marie forced her forward by dragging her by her collar.

“It’ll be okay… I know you must be scared.” Marie spoke slowly and softly. Callie recognized it as the same tone of voice she used with her younger fans. It would’ve made her angry if her silky voice wasn't so reassuring. “You’ll be safe in there. I promise.”

“Promise…” Callie whimpered and leaned down to get in the cage. She relaxed into the soft cushions beneath, and heard the door lock behind her.

“I promise.” Was the last thing she heard before passing out.
