Broken Key Loop

One of my MK5 keysfobs fell off the small key ring at the top, which is where it joins the keyfob. It's made of plastic or soft metal. I've done a hole in the wall and then wet-sanded the surface to make it more durable. But I suspect that's not helping.

I've also tried wrapping the broken part of the ring in clear tape, but that does not seem to do any good. It's a shame because I use the little split rings to keep my keys in place.

If the case for the key fob itself is broken it is usually possible to remove the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). There are online kits to help, but they generally only offer an interim fix. It is more efficient to take it to a mechanic who will replace the battery and reprogram the key fob. You can also purchase a new case at the locksmith or home improvement stores. They're not likely to be as expensive as a new key fob.
