How to Build a DIY Plane Blade Sharpener

Building your own plane blade sharpener is a simple and affordable way to maintain razor-sharp edges on your planer blades without buying expensive sharpening jigs. All you need are common household items that you likely own already or can be picked up cheaply at a hardware store.

Begin by collecting a rectangular hardwood slab that is approximately one foot in length, four inches in width, and one inch in depth. This will serve as the stable base. You also need three ceramic tiles of identical to the wooden platform. These will function as your grinding layers. Make sure they are spotless and undamaged. You will also need sandpaper in three different grits — 80, 150, and 400. These grits will allow you to progress from rough shaping to a mirror finish.

Position the lowest layer on the wooden base and attach it using heavy-duty glue like liquid nails or polyurethane glue. Let it dry completely. Once dry, add the second layer and attach it with the same adhesive. Repeat with the third piece. This creates a stacked abrasive platform that you can use for different stages of sharpening.

Start with the P80 sheet and trim it precisely to match the glass surface. Use strong mounting tape or adhesive spray to anchor it without bubbles. Mount the P150 sheet on the second layer and attach the finest grit to the upper surface. Make sure each sheet is flat and properly adhered. This setup gives you a progression from rough shaping to fine honing.

To begin the process, place the plane blade flat on the 80 grit surface. Move it steadily with uniform downward pressure, keeping the bevel angle consistent. Keep the entire edge in constant contact. After about 12–18 forward motions, reverse the blade and lightly pass it on the abrasive to deburr. Proceed to the medium grit and repeat. Finish on the 400 grit for a razor edge.

best wood planes and degrease the abrasive layers using alcohol after each use to clear away fine metal filings and ensure consistent performance. Keep it in a moisture-free environment so the sandpaper does not get damp. With regular use and proper care, your custom-built system will serve you for many years and give you surgical precision on every cut for smoother planing and better results in your carpentry work.
