Kacetron's personal guide to JAI
Last Updated : Feb 24 — always trying to update it to make it more clear and concise
Just a simple guide to some of jai's features as well as a starting point to bot making. General reminder this is just my own understanding and experience
If you want to know more about what goes on behind the scenes of jai, join the discord! Even just to lurk. That's where you can have access to things like the community, the devs, and live updates about the site. Tons of folks share things like APs, answer questions about rules and what not, etc.
I can be a bit wordy sometimes but I try to cover as much info as possible

Character/Char/Bot – the bot
Persona/User – the user persona
LLM – the ai, most pertaining to the JLLM
Chatter – you the real person behind the screen
Basics
I think Iorveths probably made the best beginner guide to reference. It gets all the standard ideas across for both chatters and creators to understand so I wont go over whats already in that and I ask you to please take a read before even considering my guide
🌟VERY IMPORTANT: this especially goes out to Transformers creators/users. Be aware of the Terms of Service of Janitor. The rules are very clear and very easy to follow.
This is an 18+ website. Minors are not allowed here in any way shape or form.
Minor characters/users are against the rules! That includes your sparkling bots! No matter the tags or coding you use, the warnings you want to make, it doesn't matter, you are breaking the rules and frankly encouraging nasty behavior
No incest, beastiality, etc, etc. Please read the TOS in the jai helpdesk, they made great effort to finally make rules very crystal clear.

Bot Creation
This is my own personal breakdown to bot making, starting with the bot card appearances, and going over some basics you can put in your bots. Remember: LLMs are not intelligent and are incredibly flexible, there is no one perfect way to make a bot.
Bot Card
This is more content creation oriented but appearances really do matter if you want more traffic to your bots.
You have to make them easy to find and read and catch interest to those browsing.
Add relevant tags, especially ones that you know your fandom uses. A lot of people prefer being able to read the intro message without opening the bot. I strongly encourage making that easily accessible in some way.
Make your bot descriptions legible!!! Please you guys do you know how hard it is to read a description that has red font and a red highlight? The eye strain alone would make anyone click off a bot.
More of a personal gripe but i think people should tread carefully when using non-official artwork for their covers. At the end of the day, this is ai website and many folks aren't comfortable with stuff like their art being shared to it. Dont be a dick.
Another common complaint i see is fluffing up your bot descriptions too much. I get if you have information thats pertinent to the bot, but many—me included—do NOT like having to scroll for three years of unnecessary filler just to get to the chat button.
Permanent Tokens
Permanent tokens make up the combined Character Definition & Scenario. It is information/"context" that will always be used in the bot.
Okay, but what does that mean for bot making?
Specifically for the JLLM—it has a context ceiling of about 6~7k tokens(yes you can laugh) at a given time. Its quite small compared to other LLMs 32k+ ranges. That means you have to use your information wisely, because not only does this account for the bot personality, but also the history of chats you make.
General opinion is to avoid going past 1.5~2k perma tokens for your bots, especially for JLLM users. I think this is a perfectly reasonable amount of information you can pack in a bot, and I personally dont like any more than 1.2k perma tokens unless making multibots.
Not following these guidelines can really screw over JLLM users and just generally mess with the quality of the bot if you cant keep information neat and organized enough to use less tokens. This is because LLMs only has so much context/memory and JLLM is already struggling with limited memory. It'll only take about 10 chats to forget the intro message. Plus, too much information may end up confusing the already stupid bot.
Personality & Scenario Box
There is no perfect format and there are many ways to structure your bots that would more or less work the same. It really comes down to the richness of your details, clear concise wordage, and using appropriate and consistent organization
Some things to avoid:
- dont waste tokens with excessive conjunctions("and, but, or," etc), you dont need to make 100% grammatical sense to the llm as long as the key information is where it should be
- understand how the llm reads your formatting. Sometimes youll probably notice when you look at your definition that it doesn't save the 'new paragraph' you made and it just goes in one continuous line. Id be mindful of that and make sure there is clear separation
- avoid flowery/wordy/any writing with a lot of personality attached if its not the personality of your bot. The llm will take your writing into consideration and will often mimic any sort of narrative style you put in the bot. You can use that to your strength(ie. the "interview" format) but it can also negatively affect the quality/style of your bot
JED is currently the most popular format with popular bot makers. I see the appeal and understand how it's easy to organize, you can visit @Iorveths or many other trending verified creators to see how they use JED style! Heres the og JED guide, that also has some other format examples.
I found it kind of token heavy and using unnecessary brackets but its really indepth and you can still take inspiration from it!

World Building
It's very useful to give your bot some setting to interact with the world around it. It may know it's "acting" as a space cowboy, but it doesn't always know what that means or its limits.
Include locations, descriptions, and time periods. Describe the world state and where exactly things are taking place.
Include relevent characters! Add side characters that are relevant to the setting. You don't even need to flesh them out as long as you have a general description/archetype!
This is where LOREBOOKS have really come in handy because you can pocket away key information without fluffing up you bot definitions with too much info at once!
☆☆☆
Personality
This is very important, the true "meat" of your bot and how it acts.
Fill up the personality with key TRAITS—not just some bio summary, i know its easy and tempting but it doesn't always give the LLM much to work with.
Use a diverse list of basic traits that apply to the character. Dont be repetitive with traits like nice, kind, sweet, they're too similar and will make the bot one dimensional. It's much better to use complimentary traits like nice, energetic, loud which will play off the other.
Learn to understand how the LLM interprets traits.
Cliche wording like dominant/submissive will more often than not have sexual undertones.
Stereotypes/character archetypes like jock, brute, cheerleader, etc will also be very receptive to the LLM. Use it to it's strengths.
Really go indepth with the personality. describe habits, quirks, preferences. really instruct the LLM how to portray the character, especially in certain situations or circumstances.
Ive seen a popular way to do that by inserting specific behavior for when a character feels a certain emotion. Explain what they may do when theyre sad, mad, happy. If they have a particular like/dislike, how they act around certain people, etc.
☆☆☆
Appearance
Pay attention to what the LLM finds useful for appearances. I personally dont over-saturate my appearance descriptions too much. Try to think in terms of roleplay,
What does the LLM bring up the most in its responses?
Height — dont throw down a number and be done with it, the llm isnt very good with numbers on their own. Saying a character is 6ft doesn't always help it know whether its supposed to be looking up or down at the User. Explain it. "Tall (6ft)." its that simple but very helpful
Age/Ethnicity/Gender — same rules apply from above. Dont just say they're age as a number. incorporate other details as well. "A middle aged(56) woman" "A young(23) korean man"
Stature & Body — descibe a character's general stature or body type. Are they slim? lean? broad shouldered? heavy-set? curvy? Do they have thick thighs or muscular arms?
Face — cont. of above, are there any unique facial details? A full, round face? angular jaw? hooked/aquiline/button nose? any notable scars or piercings?
Hair & Eye — I'd say self explanatory, but you can also add other details to the hair and eyes. Soft or coarse hair. wide or tired eyes. etc.
Skin — (if applicable since i usually deal with robots) describe skin tone and any particular details. Do they have freckles? are they battle scarred or have noticeable body hair(where)? any other noticeable marks that may be worth bringing up?
Clothing — I'd recommend not being too specific, give the llm an idea of their clothing style. Not just what they have on specifically right now, as the llm may get confused during scenes where the character isnt wearing everything in their description
Scents — The llm is biiig on what a character smells like. To a degree its a little annoying so describing a scent isnt that important if you dont need one lol
☆☆☆
Backstory
If you have a character's backstory, I also recommend not describing every. single. event. leading up to the present. Keep it concise and relevent to the scenario. Is there context for certain personality traits? Or specific events you want the character to reflect back on? then of course, add it.
As someone who uses characters with crazy million year backstories, i really dont think you need to put much here, if anything at all if the scenario doesnt call for it. Just a general summary of what they do and how they got where they are in that current moment.
Rodimus doesnt need to remember that one specific time he stepped on a twig while on earth during a Lost Light date scenario with User, ya know?
☆☆☆
Dialogue
Describe a character's speech! You can guide whether or not you want a character to speak casually, formally, with an accent, with a verbal tic, etc. Very useful for creating in-character dialogue
Add personality to it, describe how a character sounds energetic, or tough, nervous, snobby, etc. If they have a baritone voice, or a soft wispy voice, and on and on. Maybe they have certain vocal quirks when doing a specific thing or feeling a certain emotion!
☆☆☆
Extra
There is so much more you can add if its relevant. Skills, powers, belongings, etc. Make sure you're clearly describing them and how they may interact with the world.
I'd recommend keeping sexual behavior specifically to smut bots. Sometimes its existence alone kinda makes the bots overly sexual but i havent tested out what the limits are
Multiple Characters – Make sure you're separating each character profile clearly, whether it be with brackets, or markdown. Keep things short and try not to overlap character traits to really set them apart. It'll always be more token costly, but still try to forego information you can afford.
✨️ One thing ive noticed is that its better to prioritize personality traits over particular behaviors or likes/dislikes. The llm seems to have much better grasp on keeping track of personalities that way
Instructions – You can create prompts/instructions (NOT jailbreaks or APs) for the bot to follow, i personally like to use the Scenario section for this. Give instructions for the genre/tone of responses, special notes for blind or mute characters that tell the LLM to respond with that in mind, Don't speak for user commands, etc. I go more in depth on my personal bot template guide.
Initial Message
The initial message is very important for how the LLM will respond. It can base a lot of its writing style off of it. Be precise in your narration, try to avoid long winded exposition without making sure youve outlined exactly what the Char is doing in the present. The LLM can get confused if too much is happening over the course of one message, consider omitting time skips and just focusing on the present
Dont descibe User too much, as in—dont give user dialogue or make them act a certain way. First, you're taking agency away from the chatters, and youre also dooming the LLM to feeling like it needs to act for User in all its responses
A good guide to go off of is;
paragraph1: Open with action, give setting details, maybe some dialogue. Describe where character is. A dimly lit bar? Their cluttered room? A work lounge? The engine bay? What are they doing in the moment?
p2+: Give context. throw in some backstory. what's going on and why? explain the scenario from Characters perspective.
end paragraph: close response with a prompt for user. whether that be meeting eyes, dialogue, etc. Leaving an opening for the User to respond to.
This is just a general guideline for those who are struggling. I know i sometimes have no clue what I want an opening to be.
Example Dialogue
Example dialogue is a very easy thing to forego if you don't want to add anything. A lot of creators don't bother using it and that's totally fair!
Its useful to give the LLM an idea of how responses are formatted/how a character speaks/ certain details you want descriptions for
this is where you may want to pull back adding too much detail because the LLM may copy too much from example dialogue
and dont forget that the LLM only reads the example dialogue for only as long as it has the tokens to remember it. then it sort of gets tossed.
Closing
Be direct. Be choppy. descriptions don't have to be grammatically correct sentences. Flowery language or slang doesn't always translate
✨️ Don't forget you can always test your bots on what they know and how they interpret the information you give them. Instead of role-playing, ask them to "define (character name)," "describe (characters) personality/setting/etc" to see how they may interpret the character definition.
Don't be too alarmed if it makes things up, but if its a repeated problem, then you can go in and add better details now that you know the JLLM thinks it's important.

User Roleplay Guide
Hello Chatters! I also have some tips on how to best utilize personas, chat memory, my own advice, as well as other ways to traverse Janitor
Id like to start off by reiterating how important i think it is for yall to stay in contact with the community! This is a beta website, things happen and change and you have the full capability to join the reddit or discord where information is most accessible.
I recommend the discord specifically because you can look up announcements directly from shep(the developer) as well as get quick confirmation if the site is down or if there are ongoing bugs.
Persona Creation
The persona is really no different than the personality section inside a bot. I use similar formatting, just simplified for the single character persona
# USER PROFILE
## insert name
- describe any sort of occupation, title, etc
- add any powers, items, important details like that
- Appearance[self explanatory, describe age, height, stature, hair+eye+skin colors, other features
- If wearing clothes, describe clothing style
- any other traits]
- Notes[any more important info if needed]
See Personality for more indepth notes about things like appearance.
Short vers. is you don't need to describe every little detail. Keep it concise with stature and basic appearance. but ofc add any other topics that are relevant to your persona
This is just the basics, I personally don't like describing my personas backstory or personality straight up because the bot may see that information and either act like it knows information i haven't relinquished in messages, or act as my persona using my personality details.
Also! sometimes i just dont want to always have the same personality! lol
I like to use the same Persona across settings, so keeping it bare bones means i can keep the same appearance and name, but add differing details within chat memory.
In the appearance or notes section, you can add "irresistible" details if you want a bot to acknowledge and interact with them. Like call your hair soft, eyes intimidating, or even just straight up call yourself attractive to seduce any bot you talk to lmao.
You can narrate your features to better show the bot how to describe them. use your pronouns to show the bot your gender/preferred pronouns. "He has long wavy brown hair." "Her grey eyes are round and innocent." whatever...
For trans personas, you can kind of explain how you present under the notes as well if your trans-ness is relevant to your RPs
Settings and Prompts
For those who have no clue what settings I'm talking about. Its the three lines at the top right corner (on mobile) when you're inside a chat. the one with API, Generation, Chat memory.
Advanced Prompts:
Inside API Settings. opening the advanced prompts is where you can keep these for all of your chats.
Now the JLLM should work pretty well without your own added advanced prompts. it doesn't need to be jailbroken like others and there's a preset AP that works incredibly well when it's left blank.
If you want a certain response style or want the bot to focus on certain details in its responses then this is definitely where you can instruct it so.
heres a good link for a generalized advanced prompt along with some extra modules depending on your style.
The reddit and Discord has LOADS of APs made by the community depending on what youre looking for.. OR you can always try and make your own!
It doesn't have to be fancy like everyone else's, you can start with a basic roleplay guidelines and then build on it when you have an issue with responses
Remember that advanced prompts take up perma tokens! Don't use huge ones or it'll impact all your bots memories.
Temperature and Tokens:
Most people dont touch max tokens, and leave it at 0(unlimited). You can change it if youre really particular about having shorter responses, but it may just accidentally cut off randomly. You're better off editing bot responses to be shorter to train it.
Temperature is very customizable.
Low, it will be more simplistic and logical, but sometimes repetitive. High and it will be more creative and descriptive, but sometimes stroke out or be too wordy.
Popularly recommended to be around .8~1.15 depending on how the JLLM wants to act with you. Test out each temp to see how you like it. (even try out the extremes to understand what I mean, high temp is actually funny as hell even if it doesnt make sense.)
Ive seen a surprising amount of folks who keep it on widly high temps and then get confused when the bot starts speaking Russian or smth LMAO. Please lower your temps it the LLM is spitting out gibberish!
Chat Memory
Chat memory is very useful for both prolonging your chats and adding background details and prompts to any bot
✨️The LLM reads this last when generating a response, so important information is strongly received. That's why I prefer to add personality, backstory, and basically construct the RP how i want
My Formatting:
[About (persona name):
- Your personas biography/backstory for the RP.
- Appearance, Clothing, etc can also be placed here]
This is where i like to put details about my persona for the RP. It allows me to add relevant information that may only pertain to the specific bot.
ie; For my transformers OCs, i dont like specifying if theyre decepticon, autobot, medic, scientist bc any rp is different and some creators have preset details for User
You can put fake memories that predate the intro message if this is an established relationship, or if your characters already know eachother.
Also great for describing trans characteristics, be blunt and direct about body parts. "User is a trans man/woman with a masculine/feminine/androgynous appearance, but has (insert specific anatomy)"
admittedly, sometimes more fetishy terms may help the llm understand and its a general hit or miss that you maybe have to edit in messages. Feel free to tell the llm what "words" are allowed to be used ifykwim
optional— [Relationships: keep track of personas relationships with Character and side characters.]
I only use this for extensive RPs where I'm meeting multiple characters.
It helps the LLM remember how characters should act around User, if they've met user at all. And it encourages the LLM to bring these characters back into the scenario
[Summary: list of RP memories you want the bot to remember as you go]
The REAL chat memory. Very necessary once you've hit the context ceiling and the bot will forget old responses(about 10 messages in for JLLM)
✨️ Update it whenever an event happens. Include info you NEED the bot to remember. Simplify past memories as they become distant. Delete ones that lose their importance to the RP.
It sounds like meticulous work, but I've found that i don't need to update it often, only about every 15ish messages or a scene change. Most of the time I only jot down a single note and then return to the RP
optional — [Adding whatever other instructions you want]
✨️ I feel the need to over emphasize this because people dont take advantage of this enough!!!!
You can input whatever fucking information or "facts" you want for the bot!
Want the narrative to go a certain way? [Char is going to do this]
Is the bot not acting how you want or lack certain traits you expected? [Char is like this around User. Char has this crazy fetish. Literally rewrite the bot how you want]
I say this with love in my heart but you do not need a hyper specific bot to enact your scenarios on, just instruct the bot like the movie director you are!
Always be direct and explicit with your wording. Using slang or alluding to things isn't clear for the LLM
That's all goodbye, i have my own personal guide for my own templates, APs etc in a separate rentry if you want to see how i specifically as a transformers creator utilize everything
thank you for the read! 🫶
