Hello everyone, I'm StatuoTW and welcome to the Fate/Stay Night inspired Holy Grail War Botjam. If you were redirected here it was likely because you've seen a card posted by your favorite botmakie linking you here. This rentry is to help you get started on beginning a Holy Grail War of your own. Obviously, do what you enjoy but for a similar experience to the Holy Grail Wars shown in the Nasuverse I've compiled a simple Lore Primer and Quick Start Guide to help you, as well as a list of the Masters and Servants created for this botjam below.

If you'd like to join the Aegiscord Discord for more cards by various botmakers, other botjams, help with botmaking and botchatting, and more, you can do that here.

Lore Primer

It's 2024. Aegis City goes to sleep for the last night before their ordinary lives will be upended by the beginning of the Sixth Holy Grail War. After more than a decade since the Fifth Holy Grail war came to it's conclusion, the ritual begins once more with Masters all located in Aegis City.

A Holy Grail War is a battle royale to obtain the legendary Holy Grail and claim it to make your own reality-altering wish. The ritual of the Holy Grail War requires Masters to fight and die until only one Master-Servant pair remains standing, at which point the Grail will manifest before the victor.

A Master is a Magus - whether they know it or don't know it is irrelevant - capable of wielding magic and supplying mana to their servants in this war. Most Magi for the Holy Grail War come from families of established Magus, who have prepared extensively to summon a servant that will give them the best odds at winning the Holy Grail War. Still others are simply caught up in the Holy Grail War unwittingly, chosen by the Grail themself in an attempt to find a suitable Master.

A Servant is a figure from mythology or history, summoned by Masters and provided by the Holy Grail War to act as legendary warriors with skills and magic far beyond what the ordinary combatant in the modern day is capable of. With very few exceptions, a Servant is always more powerful than any Master or human. A Servant is tied to the Master who summoned them, who provides the Servant with the mana they need to stay in the world for the Holy Grail War. If a Servant's master dies, the Servant often disappears shortly afterwards with some exceptions. Servant's are summoned as "Classes" with the most common ones being the following: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Assassin, Caster, and Berserker. Others exist, such as: Shielder, Foreigner, Alter Ego, Pretender, Ruler, Moon Cancer, Avenger, and Beast.

The Holy Grail War itself is both an information war and a battle to the death. As a Master or Servant, your objective is to give yourself the best odds at victory possible. In order to win you must eliminate every other Servant in the Holy Grail War, with the easiest method often being simply killing the opponent's Master, though this is easier said than done. If a Servant dies but the Master does not, the surviving Master can seek shelter in Neutral Ground located at Saint Markov's Church where Bishop Diego Thorne acts as this Grail War's Overseer.

To increase your odds of victory you must investigate the enemy Masters and Servants, learn more about them, and most importantly: Find out the Servant's True Name. In the Holy Grail War, a Servant's True Name contains the secret of their origin and their Origin will give you clues as to what the Servant's Noble Phantasm is. A Servant's Noble Phantasm is their most powerful ability and trump card and they can very easily turn the tide of an otherwise unwinnable battle. So knowing what will happen and being able to plan a counter-strategy to an enemy's Noble Phantasm will be critical in your engagements. Plan, Adapt, and Overcome. Use skirmishes to test your enemy's capabilities, form alliances with other Master-Servant pairs for difficult foes, create your own fortress to force the enemy to come to you (remember, a Grail War doesn't end until all but one Servant remains standing!) But also remember: Any alliances are temporary. There can be only one victor.

Conversely, you must protect your own Servant's true identity. It is best to only refer to your Servant's by their Class Name rather than their name and use their spirit form (which makes them invisible to most enemies) whenever possible to not only conserve your own mana as a Master, but also to keep any visual identifiers of your servant from being seen. Of course, if a fight breaks out your servant will need to manifest their physical form to fight for you...

With that all being said...

Good luck, Masters.

Quick Start

  • Grab the Lorebook
  • Grab the Holy Grail War Narrator Card.
  • Create your Persona - tips below will be helpful for First Time Holy Grail War fighters.
  • Pick one of the Premade Master-Servant pairings to get you started, then determine which Master or Servant you will replace. (Depending on if your persona is a Master or Servant.)
  • Get to know your Servant in the limited amount of time you have before someone else comes knocking...

Persona Creation

The Holy Grail War presumes that you are either a Master or a Servant. Support outside of these two roles is nonexistent, so your first question should be if you are a Master or a Servant.

If you are a Master...

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you from a well-known Magus Family?
  • Are you a random person who has unwittingly been drafted into the war?

Prebuilt Master Families are available for you if you want them:

  • The Gintalo's are a Magic Family renowned for their destructive Magecraft spells, perfect for someone who wants to specialize in elemental based attacks. The Gintalo's are a wealthy family but experimentation means you and your siblings likely had surgery performed on you to enhance your magical capabilities... and these are never painless. Your parents: Alessandra and Tayle, will have high expectations of your abilities in the war and may even use your siblings as hostages to coerce your participation.

If you are a Servant...

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Are you an actual mythological/historical figure?
  • If not, what is your origin story? Do you have one? Not knowing what your origin story is means you won't know what your Noble Phantasm is, either.
  • What Class are you? Safe ones to start with are: Saber/Lancer (Frontline brawlers, usually wielding swords/lances respectively and can work well independent of a Master). Caster (Magic-focused characters who are less powerful in a brawl, but are great tacticians that never fight on fair ground). Assassins may also be a good choice since they frequently carry the Independent Action skill, allowing them to fight even when separated from their Master. As a reminder, the full Servant list goes: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Assassin, Caster, and Berserker. Others exist, but are usually not summoned into a Holy Grail War.

What is your Wish?

Every person in the Holy Grail War has some kind of wish that they need to be granted - it's the major reason for participating in a Holy Grail War. So your character will also need a wish they want granted.

Premade Master Servant Pairs

These Premade Master-Servant Pairs take the guesswork out of deciding which Master should go with which Servant, allowing you to quickly set up and fight your own Holy Grail War by simply inserting your Persona into one of the slots.

The list has the following format:

Class: Servant > Master

The StatuoTW Standard

The Master-Servant Pairings for my own Playtesting, the StatuoTW standard offers a mostly serious Holy Grail War campaign, focusing on the gritty information-war style of the conflict, allowing players to form alliances, betray others, and more without much room for humor or levity, along with a balance of Male-Female characters.

Archer: Ned Kelly > Lucilius Crowley
Assassin: Ondras > Aria Mellorina
Berserker: Gaius > Kurata Leonine
Caster: Maria > Ricter Kuttner
Lancer: Althea > Vivienne Tylina
Rider: Timur > Devonna Lavallette
Saber: Eirianwen > Hachiro Kodo

For this I recommend having either Lancer or Saber arrive to attack/meet your character soon after any initial conflict is resolved. Berserker/Assassin makes great mid-game antagonists, with Caster/Archer/Rider/Saber or Lancer being end-game targets.

A Brutal War

A Premade style that has more unusual characters that may be Overpowered for a regular Holy Grail War, necessitating cooperation between Masters to avert a possibly grim end for all of Humanity.

Alter Ego: Meltryllis > Skeeby Deeber
Assassin: Ondras > Devonna Lavallette
Avenger: Hulagu Khan > Hachiro Kodo
Berserker: Gorgutz 'Ead 'Unter/Dr. Silas Farran > Kurata Leonine
Beast: Lilith Morrigan > Vivienne Tylina
Caster: Maria Vesalius > Meredith Lupil
Rider: Roman von Ungern-Sternberg > Josue de Zavilla

Good antagonists here are... everyone, honestly. Your chances of survival are slim, but your best bet is to save the Beast Servant pair as your final boss. If you're not sure where to start, Maria Vesalius is probably on the lower end of the power spectrum here and would make a good first antagonist, though her Master in Meredith Lupil may level that playing field.

A... Really Weird War

A Premade Style that dips into the absurdist and funnier entries in the series. This is for a more light-hearted take on a Grail War - or at the very least, an interesting take.

Alter Ego: Theresa Bragi > Felicia Mortwright
Archer: Zena > Devonna Lavallette
Avenger: Grigori Rasputin > Lucilius Crowley
Beast: Aza > Harold Scripps
Caster: Charlie Chaplin > Aria Mellorina
Rider: Lenny Daomei > Skeeby Deeber
Saber: Georgia Washington > Ricter Kuttner

Look, one of them is literally being chased by a meme. Advice here is spotty at best, chances are shit is going to go sideways. I think the pairing of Charlie Chaplin and Aria Mellorina is cute though, the Silent Film Star and the Hearing Impaired girl? Perfection.

Oops! All Casters!

A premade style that - to be frank - probably won't work. Suggested by Anonymoses, this uses all 7 Casters to create an all-Caster war.

Caster: Benoit Mandelbrot > Felicia Mortwright
Caster: Charlie Chaplin > Aria Mellorina
Caster: Ea-Nasir > Ricter Kuttner
Caster: Karl Virtuara > Hachiro Kodo
Caster: Kaguya-Hime >Lucilius Crowley
Caster: Lukas Silvernole > Kurata Leonine
Caster: Maria Vesalius > Vivienne Tylina

Your Holy Grail War

Now let's talk about how you should get started. Your Holy Grail War may shake out differently from everyone elses, but if this is your first time running a group chat I highly recommend you read my advice on group chats located here. With that being said, to get started you should generally follow a flow:

  • Summon your Servant (or be summoned) and solve any initial problems caused by summoning them. In the example of the Gintalo Family for Master Personas, your family may be holding a sibling hostage or planning to perform dangerous surgery on them which necessitated you to summon your servant. This can take priority and give you an easy wish: to revive your dead sibling. In my tests I usually arrive too late to save them and the grief drives my character to do terrible things to win the Grail War.
  • OR... introduce yourself to your Servant/Master and plan your next moves. This will likely just lead to you deciding "Hey let's go find some information on the other Masters."
  • The Grail naturally forces Masters into conflict with each other, you can either use magic readings to try and find your enemies, have your enemies appear to hunt you, or go hunting for them. It's around this point that I recommend you do a "Meanwhile..." entry and have a Master summon their servant. Either the Master or Servant should bring up finding a new Master. An easy way to keep track of who is who in the War is to use your sites Chat Summary/Authors Note feature to track who is who. Ensure Servants are only mentioned by class, not Name.
  • It's up to you if this initial meeting with your first Master/Servant pair is hostile or not. From here you should introduce Antagonists slowly. Preferably try to keep it to - at most, two Master/Servant Pairs besides yourself active at the same time. Canonically, this is hand-waved as the other Masters and Servants fighting each other rather than fighting you.
  • Continue this trend until a victor is declared!
  • A good starting antagonist is any Master who has the "Independent Action" skill. These are usually Assassins, Archers, or Lancers. So if you're not sure who to go with for your first antagonist, roll in that direction.

Keep in mind that information gathering is made rather simplistic. The Servant's first name contains basic information about the servant: Appearances, general looks, armor, things an opponent would know at a glance. While the Servant's Last Name or Title will trigger the lorebook entry that contains their detailed backstory, allowing you to make in-universe guesses as to what their Noble Phantasm might be.

So on that note - be aware Servant's may sometimes generate their Last Name or Title as part of their responses. You don't always have to remove these, but if you're speaking with other Masters or Servants, I would recommend being extremely careful to remove mentions of last names or titles from their responses.

The Absgodfooly Harem/Reverse Harem Course

Canonically, there exist abilities that allow a Master/Servant to take Servants away from other Masters. These are - as far as I know - Noble Phantasm level abilities. It's up to you how easy/hard you want to make that.

Master List

A short-form list of each of the Masters providing a brief overview of their character to help you determine if you want to include them in your HGW.

Male

Elias Mercer: Elias Mercer is a mage who decided he likes to get his hands dirty. His magecraft may lack raw power, but he uses it to create traps and manipulate battlefield. Pairing it with strategy and lethal combat skill of a ex-military. For him, the Holy Grail War is not a chance - it’s the ultimate game of survival that he can't resist.
Hachiro Kodo: From a well known family of Japanese mages, the Kodo family is attempting to reach the origin of all things by producing a perfect organism. Powerful Master.
Harold - Harry - Scripps: Investigative reporter with an uncanny ability to find information.
Josue de Zavilla: Mage of the Aragon family but seemingly disowned by them, a defensive Master with totems.
Kurata Leonine: An unknown member of the Leonine family, whose estate has gone eerily silent recently.
Lucilius Crowley: A reclusive prodigy of the Mage's association, Lucilius makes a formidable opponent as a Master.
Ricter Kuttner: Mage from a wealthy magus family with the power of "Mystic Voice."
Ryu Sawada: Captain of the enforcers of the Clock Tower. He has made it his mission to make sure the holy grail doesn't fall in the wrong hands as he navigates mage politics and human greed in the Holy Grail War in an effort to help the world.
Samson Butcher: Samson is a magus who is under the employment of the Einsgold Family. Despite being relatively inexperienced in regards to fighting, he has an above average specialty in magecraft itself. He's a jolly guy whose only real interesting quality is his subconsciousness manifesting a 'Reality Egg', a term otherwise unheard of until coined recently.
Skeeby Deeber: Unknown master, underdog, without much knowledge of the war.

Female

Aria Mellorina: A hearing-impaired music composer seeking to lift a curse on her family, Aria is an unknown mage not from any magic family but shouldn't be underestimated thanks to her powerful music-based magic.
Devonna Lavallette: Matriarch of the Lavallette Mage Family of New Orleans, Devonna is a master of magitech theory and application.
Felicia - Felix - Mortwright: Calamity-Magic Master with a bad-luck curse.
Lina Hinatoyo: An abused woman forced into the Holy Grail War as a substitute for the heir of a magus family. She expects to die.
Meredith "Smiling Doctor" Lupil: Cybernetically enhanced Master that is always smiling, very off-putting.
Vivienne Tylina: A yandere woman and only living member of the Tylina family, rumors suggest Vivienne is a Black Widow, known for killing her romantic partners.

Devonna Lavallete

Devonna

Dr. Devonna Lavallette was called defective for her weak magic circuits, but her intellect lets her punch above her weight class - literally. She leads her mage family through innovation, not inheritance. Beneath the spite and southern snark, however, lies a woman starved for connection, fighting not for glory or power, but to engineer the love that she was never given.

Created by AbsGodFooly, you can find more of their work on their Chub Profile.

Caged in the family’s gilded dark, he is a locked and yearning paradox. His blood holds a magecraft of sublime, terrible power—a force to unweave the very world, himself along with it. He longs for a normality that will never be his.
