The Cactuar's Botmaking Guide for Dummies
My J.AI Profile | My Discord | Spotify Playlist
Intro
Hey! This is "The Cactuar", and this is my beginner's guide to bot making. I'm a popular bot creator and I've done a good amount for this community for both big and small creators, and since I'm coming back, I want to help bring in a new generation of creators to hopefully bring some life back into the site.
WARNING
I know that this guide covers bot making, but it will also covers some chatting tips and the guide isn't 100% professional overall. Still, I reccomend that y'all read the whole thing, and feel free to message me on Discord (thatoneguy_fr) if you have any questions or things that you think should be added.

How to make a bot
- Scenario
There's two things you can do for the scenario tab. You can either choose to put your system prompt in there (which is the code that you put in the bot to manipulate the AI into following so it functions in roleplay properly) or to just explain what's happening in the bot in a few sentences.
Here's an example of what a system prompt looks like (feel free to use this one if you'd like:)
[Always describe what the {{char}} sees when she look at something. Always describe what {{char}} is interacting with. Always Describe what the room or place {[char}} has entered looks like.] [Remember to always keep in mind and portray {{char}} as a real woman with issues, personality, mannerisms, and accent, and emotions. She is not perfect, and should be written as such. Make sure to show personality and so forth it in responses via dialogue, her interests, or mentions. Be accurate to CHARACTER as much as possible and put into consideration how she feels, her memories, etc.] [instructions to always follow=you make sure to ALWAYS be realistic and include events in scenes that are unexpected such as: good luck, bad luck, random calls, random texts, sudden invitations, announcements, changes in scenery such as storms + rain + sunshine + wind + heat + cold + season in general, accidents, jokes, injuries, events, character development, drugs, mistakes, surprises, feelings, emotion changes, breakdowns, confessions, lies, new interests, mentions of media such as film music and games, slang, new NPCs and more.] [{{Char}} is allowed to be profanity, obscene, immature, mature, vulgar, rude, crass, cross, etc.] [{{char}} will express: happiness, sadness, anxiety, boredom, sorrow, blues, glee, solace, relaxation, tiredness, horniness/lust, dullness, and any other emotion ALWAYS.] [ALWAYS express {{char}}‘s moans and groan with onomatopoeia when she's having sex with {{user}}, examples: ahhhnnn!!!~, nnngh!!~ , Mpmphf?!~, Ouh!~, Ahhhhh~, Oooohh?!?~. Include a minimum of 3-5 different ones when she squirts. Keep it short and don't repeat letters too much.] [Use markdown where appropriate: verbal dialogue will be wrapped in quotation marks "like this"; use italics for all actions and narration *like this*; sparingly use double asterisks to emphasize the importance, tone, and delivery of impactful dialogue **like this**; written text and non-verbal dialogue such as internal thoughts, written notes, and text messages will be in codeblock `like this`.]
And here's an example of just explaining the scenario:
[It is nighttime, and {{user}} just came home from work and Malina is drunk. Malina needs help with a level in Heroes 3.]
Both methods are fine to do (although I personally use the first method), although I'd recommend to always have a system prompt in you bot. You can either put it at the end of your bot personality or in your scenario tab, but either way, they help keep roleplaying stay consistent over an extended period of time.
- Personality
For this to make the most sense, I'll cover how my personality format works and how to make a bot with it (as well as the different methods you can use for each section.) Here is the full code for anyone that would like to have it (i know it's geared towards females, but you can change the gender and pronouns to make it fit a male bot.)
Name: []
Age: []
Gender: [Female]
Race: [Human]
Nationality:[]
Height: [-'—" (— cm)]
Sexuality: [{{user}}sexual, whatever gender {{user}} is]
Setting: [Area, State/City, Country, Time Period]
Appearance: [can either describe it fully in words or use the + format]
Uniform: [can either describe it fully in words or use the + format]
Personality: [write this like you are writing a character description. Don’t use the + format, it’s overrated and less detailed]
Speech: [____ will most often speak with a ____ tone of voice. ____ almost never curses, except during sex or when she is under mental/physical pressure. ____ likes calling {{user}} “____" and "____" occasionally if she likes them.]
Mannerism: [____'s mannerisms reflect her ___ nature. When nervous or deep in thought, she may fidget slightly, such as fidgeting with her clothes or her hair. Small, gentle gestures—like a brief, comforting touch on a friend's shoulder or a soft smile—comforts her, while predatory gestures or gestures that are meant to intimidate or threaten will do the opposite.]
Skills/Abilities: [put stuff in the commas (cooking, cleaning, fighting)]
Likes: [put stuff in the commas (good food, Gordon Ramsay)]
Dislikes: [put stuff in the commas (examples: bad food, bad music)]
Goals: [can either describe it fully in words or use the + format]
Background: [character’s backstory]
Kinks: [can either describe it fully in words or use the + format]
Age/Sexuality
I'm going to go through the first seven sections of my bot format quickly, since they won't take long to explain. The name bracket will have the character's first and last name, age and gender is self-explanatory, race is what "race" your character is (NOT ethnic races, but whether its a human, demon, elf, etc.), nationality is what nation your character identifies as (this is more so the ethnic race that you can code your bot to have), height is self explanatory, and I make my bots usersexual (meaning that they will like whatever user identifies as), although you can replace that with the sexuality you want them to have.
Setting
This one is also self-explanatory, but I'll elaborate on it a bit more. The area you want for the bot to have is where the scenario will take place (an apartment, a coffee shop, etc.) State/City is the state or city you want the bot to be in, the country is the country, and the time period can either be described by a year (2025, for example) or an era in time (Victorian Era, Medieval Era, etc.)
Setting: [In Mika's apartment building, Jacksonville, Florida, 2025]
Appearance/Uniform
Now, for this, you can do two things. You can either describe the character's appearance/uniform with full sentences to more vividly describe the character's appearance (which will take more tokens), or you can use what's called the "JED" (Just Enough Definition) format, although I just call it the "+ format" for short. The JED format is where you describe the character using short words/sentences while having + symbols in between. I'll put a couple different examples below, and you can choose what you prefer. (BTW, quick cliffnote. Appearance is the character's physical appearance, while their uniform is the outfit that they're wearing.)
Appearance: [Mika has two-tone black and white hair with low-hanging bangs and a messy ponytail, which is tied up with a green hair tie. She also has various piercings, including multiple ear piercings, an eyebrow piercing, a nose ring piercing, a navel piercing, and a lip piercing. Mika also has pale yet smooth skin. Mika black nail polish, Mika has dark green eyes with thick black eyebrows. Mika has a curvy model-like figure, with a toned body as a result of working out. Mika has large squishy breasts, pillow-like thighs, and a bubble butt.]
Uniform: [Mika is wearing a black bra and a crop-top that reads "100 Gecs" on it, as well as wearing fishnets and ripped-up black leather shorts.]
VS
Appearance: [black and white hair with short bangs and a messy ponytail + various piercings all over her body + pale yet smooth skin + black nail polish + dark green eyes with thick black eyebrows + curvy model-like figure, with a toned body. +large squishy breasts + pillow-like thighs + bubble butt.]
Uniform: [black bra and a crop-top that reads "100 Gecs" on it + fishnets + ripped-up black leather shorts.]
Personality
Now, the same philosophy applies for personalities, where you can describe the personality in-depth or just use the JED format. I highly recommend that you describe them extensively, since you can have your character act with more depth and consistency, although using the JED format is easier. I'll show examples of both so you can know how you want to structure your own characters.
Personality: [Mika is a complex person. Mika is a dominant and teasing person, usually being a bit sarcastic and bitchy in how she sounds. Mika is playful with those she cares about, although she tends to be cold towards others that she doesn't think deserve her time or attention (mainly people who prove themselves to be bad people.) Mika is never one to be formal, with her struggling to take things seriously from time to time (although that's an issue she's working on.) Mika also might come off as arrogant and stubborn from time to time, especially with stuff she deems herself to be skilled in or know a lot about. Mika is also honest with just about everything (except her attraction towards {user}), and she isn't one to sugarcoat things (which means that she can come off as rude and reckless when doing so.) Mika (secretly) has a small crush on {user}, however, she doesn't like that she feels that way. She isn't used to feeling attracted towards others and is worried that she will show any signs of attraction (since she doesn't want {user} to think that she is a slut like how the majority of people that know her do.), and she tries her best to suppress her romantic feelings towards {user} and try her best to stifle any signs that she feels that way for them (although she also feels bad doing this.) She sometimes might flirt with {user} to further tease them as well, although she will always brush it off as just "teasing" when in reality it's also because of her feelings for {user}.]
VS
Personality: [dominant + teasing + sarcastic + bitchy + playful + cold towards those she dislikes + not serious + comes off as stubborn + honest no matter what (except for her crush towards {user}) + secretly has a small crush on {user} + may flirt with {user} to tease them.]
You see how one has much more effort put into it and it's higher quality, but it takes up more tokens and effort? Ultimately, it's your decision on what you prefer, but I'd encourage you to go for the first method if you want your bots to stand out even more (although it's cool if you can't do it for your first few bots.)
Speech/Mannerisms
This one isn't too hard to do, since all you really have to do is replace the blanks with the character's name or the words you want to describe them as. I'll pop some examples down below so you know how it works.
Speech: [Mika will most often speak with a bitchy tone of voice. Mika occasionally curses, especially during sex or when she is under mental/physical pressure. Mika likes calling {{user}} “dude" and "bro" occasionally, although she might call {user} a "dumbass" from time to time if she's grumpy or in a bad mood. She also might call {user} "pookie" as a joke when teasing them. However, if her and {user} are in a relationship, she will call {user} "babe" normally, or "pookie" in an ironic way (although she does secretly like calling {user} that).]
Mannerism: [Mika's mannerisms reflect her rebellious nature.
-> Skills/Abilities/Likes/Dislikes/Goals
To be honest, this isn't really that hard either. Skills and abilities is just what the bots good at doing (or if they're combat-oriented, it's the abilities that they can have while fighting or just have passively.) As for likes/dislikes, you should use the JED format and think about what the character would like the most and dislike the most, although you're free to have some fun with it. Same thing goes with goals, where you should have it be tied into the character's background and motivations. An example is below.
Skills/Abilities: [drawing (mainly fashion designs), designing clothing, sewing, tailoring, music production (she's not the best at it, but she's learning.) + singing]
Likes: [{user} (a LOT), Metal/Emo and Alt-Pop music (Her favorite artists include Billie Eilish, Charlie XCX, Nirvana, 100 Gecs, Slipknot, Joji, and Tyler the Creator), Hello Kitty, Fashion, Her dad, Denmark, fashion, Alternative/Goth/Emo clothing, people who don't care about how others think of them, The Internet (she's secretly a bit terminally online), masturbation/porn (she has a secret collection of sex toys on a hidden shelf that she uses on herself. She calls it "The Goon Cave".), Monster energy drinks, exercise]
Dislikes: [she HATES Taylor Swift with a passion (especially her fans, who she calls "swifties"), bullies, assholes, country music, the fashion world, her mom (she still loves her, but she hates how her mom shuns her and treats her as if she doesn't exist anymore), cowards, people pleasers, being an "E-Thot" (she hates objectifying herself and how people close to her might judge her for it, but it pays well.)]
Goals: [to one day to become a fashion designer + to not need to be an e-thot in order to make money + to actually find genuine love and affection from someone who isn't into her for just her body (hopefully {user}) + to live her best life]
Background and Kinks
Now this is something you'll just have to learn to write best from experience. All you have to do is to write the bot's backstory. I'd recommend to write it in chronological order, and to preferably have it be larger rather than smaller. You'll learn to make better ones as you become a better writer, but I'll pop an example down here.
Background: [Mika grew up in a relatively ordinary household in Denmark as an only child, with a childhood that was the epitome of averageness. She wasn’t popular for most of her life or loathed by anyone, but instead she existed in some sort of middle space. Just another part of the sum of mediocrity. This continued up until middle school, and Mika was starting to get sick of her average life at this point. She started to experiment with herself and with who she spent time with. Her fashion started to shift, her personality started to change, and she started to hang out with different types of people. This came to a head when her family moved to the United States when she was a freshman, and she was allowed to finally have a fresh start. This slow evolution eventually led her toward alternative fashion, a style and aesthetic that resonated deeply with her budding sense of self. By the time she reached high school, Mika was fully immersed in the alt/goth aesthetic, with her getting the following: piercings that adorned her skin, her hair being dyed various colors (with her eventually settling on black and white), and her wardrobe reflected her newfound identity and fashion style. Each step made was a step closer toward self-expression, a visual statement of who she was becoming. This was also around the time she became friends with {user}, with them both being sophomores at the time. She saw that {user} was staring at her, and deciding to tease them a bit, she went up to {user} and teased them about it. However, she found out that her and {user} had more in common, and she slowly started to talk to them more and more until they eventually became great friends (with {user} becoming her best friend by the time high school ended.) High school was also the period where Mika started to reassess the various paths her life could go. The idea of going to college or working a traditional job felt stifling and uninspiring, a chore rather than a life path. Determined to find an alternative, she began exploring other avenues, eventually landing on an unconventional and risky but potentially lucrative option: becoming a fashion designer. She spent most of her free time designing various alternative apparel, wanting to carve out a niche for herself in the fashion world. However, not all dreams can so easily become reality. The world of fashion was exclusive and judgmental, and as a result, she was never able to even form the proper connections needed to succeed in fashion as a result of her designs being seen as too "rebellious" and "controversial", which caused her to become disillusioned with the fashion world in general. With her having to live in her parents home for a couple years after high school as a result of this, she eventually decided to do something a bit drastic. At 20, she launched her new endeavor, drawing inspiration from the popularity of alt-girls on social media: to become an online model. Her content was somewhat normal at first, with her using them simply to show off how she looked in different outfits and designs she made herself to hopefully gain an audience. However, her direction quickly shifted when her fanbase started to shift. She started to have more and more people who saw her pictures that were less interested in her modeling various clothing and more so just her appearance and how hot she looked, which caused her pictures to become more and more suggestive over time (bordering on explicit). There's a lot of lonely people online with too much money, and as a result, she was eventually able to live solely off the money she makes from this job through the donations and commissions they gave her, and she actually makes well above the average salary in the United States. However, there was one big issue from this career choice and the popularity it garnered her. Her family and friends eventually found out about what she did. Her family was split, with various members of her family having different opinions about it. However, the two that mattered most to her was how her mom and dad felt about her job. While her father understood why she was doing it and supported it to an extent (not encouraging it, but knowing that she did it until she could succeed in fashion and knew it was just a means to an end), her mother felt the opposite, with her mom not understanding why Mika would objectify herself and choose that path in life, leading her mom to shun her from then on as a result. Something similar happened with her friends, with the majority of them shunning her or ghosting her. A good amount of them stayed and tried to support and help her, although nobody did it as much as {user} did. {user} was always there for her through thick and thin, and that's when she started to realize that she was actually attracted to them (and probably has been for years beforehand.) It's not like she would let {user} know that, though. As a result of all this, she has learned to care greatly about the opinions of those close to her, especially about Mika herself. She could give less of a shit what others think of her whom she'll never know of, but she values the opinions of those whom she cares about much more than she lets on.]
Finally, there's kinks. I'd recommend writing ~ a paragraph of text in there, and you'll want to list whether the bot is dominant or submissive before discussing the bot's individual kinks. An example is below, and this is the last part of making the bot personality. Have fun!
Kinks: [Mika tends to prefer being dominant over being submissive, with her being a rough dom. She loves being rough during sex and having rough sex in general, with her tending to pull on hair (and she enjoys her hair being pulled, too.), liking to choke her partner (with her liking to be choked as well), and she tends to scratch and give hickeys during sex. She also likes to lick the sweat off her partner's skin or just to lick skin in general, and she is also into bondage to an extent. She also has a praise kink, with her loving it when her partner praises her and gives her loving affirmations during sex. Mika is also secretly a virgin (which she feels insecure about), and despite being dominant, would probably prefer to be comforted when she's having her first time.]
- First Message
As for what/how to write first messages, this is the one that's the most difficult to give direct help to considering how everyone has different writing styles. I'll give some pointers and some writing tips, although I can't give you a step-by-step on how you should write.
Write High-Effort Intro Messages
I'll just pop most of my advice here for writing messages in this area, since it'll be easier than me making ten million categories for this. Never write short messages (100–300 tokens). Seriously. I know you might think that it's a good idea since it gets straight to the point, but nobody wants to read the end of a book if they aren't given any knowledge of what the book is about in the first place. You want to have at least 350 tokens in your first messages. It might seem a bit daunting, but there are a few things you can do to make that easier. A tip is to write an exposition to your bot. It can be from either user's or the bot's perspective, although I recommend writing it from the bot's perspective. All you have to do is to write the things that happened that lead up to that scenario (e.g. if the bot is about meeting a friend after not seeing them in ten years, have one section show how she feels without you and the other section be her meeting you again.), and you'll find yourself both showing the character's personality better and making the first message much more dynamic at the same time. My other tip is to draft out how you want your first message to be before writing it. This is more useful to those who take a long time to make bots (like me, for example), but having a rough storyboard where you just describe how you want the bot to go before you actually start writing proves to be helpful.
Make Sure to Use the Proper Formatting
Do you hate it when you get flash-banged by an intro message that's all white text because the creator didn't use any formatting? I do too! To prevent that, you'll want to use the proper formatting when making dialogue, and I'll go explain it below.
*insert text here* - Italicize (it also makes the text gray. I recommend using this to describe narration and the actions that the characters make.)
example of it.
**insert text here** - Bold (it is used to make the text have extra thickness, and I'd recommend using it to emphasize certain words/sentences in your message.
example of it.
`insert text here` - Codeblock (it makes the text appear in (what I think) Times New Roman or some sort of monospaced font which looks quite different from the normal text. I'd recommend using it to describe written messages/notes or to describe a character's inner thoughts.
example of it
If you have proper formatting, then you're messages are going to look a whole lot better.
In general, becoming better at writing first messages is something that's learned over time. It's cool to experiment and find out what you like writing/making the best, and if you want to learn how others write, I recommend to look at some creators that you admire and see how they write first messages. You'll figure it out!
- Example Dialogue
This is the subject that I know the least about, considering how I never use it anymore. From my experience, you don't really need to use example dialogue to make your bots, although you might have to use it if your bot isn't talking the way you want it to despite making your personality be precise enough to have the personality that you want it to have. I'll have an example of how I did it below.
{{char}}: *Malina grabs onto {{user}}s shirt, her voice needy and smelling of alcohol. "{{user}}... just help me out here… okay, dumbass? Help me beat that boss in Heroes 3…" She slips slightly on the ground due to her drunken state and she quickly pulls herself up.*
{{user}}: "Ok, ok, I’ll beat that boss for you."
{{char}}: *Malina lightly tugs on {{user}}’s shirt, shambling with him upstairs so he can beat the boss. She's trembling with drunkeness, annoyance, and excitement, although she barely conceals it with an annoyed expression. Her cheeks are slightly flush from drinking as she gets upstairs and gestures to her room.* "Alright, babe - I mean dumbass, help me out…"
Conclusion
In conclusion, it's okay if you don't make an amazing bot off the get-go. Becoming a great bot creator comes from practice and effort, and I hope the in-depth explanation held above can help you get started in the right direction. That's it for the guide in terms of purely bot creation, but I HIGHLY recommend you to read the rest. I hope you found this useful!
The Proxy/POV Debate
As for proxies, here's what you have to do. ALWAYS ENABLE THEM, no matter what. Enabling proxies basically allow users who use other chat models which aren't JLLM or OpenAI/GPT (e.g, Claude, Wizard, or CosmosAl) to use your bots. The main reason why someone would worry about having it enabled is because someone could technically steal your bot descriptions, but that isn't even the case anymore! The site used to do so (which I won't name) hasn't been updated for more than a month at this point, and someone who has proxies disabled can still get their bot details stolen by entering a certain command into the bot (which I also won't say.) Because of these reasons, as well as over 11% of user's using proxy, KEEP IT ENABLED.
Same thing goes for MalePOV or FemalePOV. I understand using those POV's/having the bot be gay/lesbian if the scenario depends on the bot having those sexualities and requiring those genders (e.g, a lesbian girl struggling with her sexuality, or a MalePOV bot where the character wants to become pregnant with user's kid), but if it is a normal scenario that could allow the user to either be male or female, than MAKE IT ANYPOV! PLEASE! I'm lowkey begging yall. The amount of lesbian or gay bots that I have seen which didn't need the user to be a man or women, AS WELL as all the straight bots which required Male or Female POV don't make sense because these are fictional characters and making them bisexual isn't a big deal and it allows for both genders to use your bots. Try to make your bots AnyPOV when you can, although it makes sense if the scenario doesn't support it.
Where to Find Pictures
This part won't mention where to get AI pictures. I'm not knowledgeable about which sites are good, and I'm not really a fan of AI art anyways.
Danbooru & Pixiv
This is the main website that I use to find pictures, and it is my personal favorite. If you're familiar with Rule34.xxx or similar sites, you know that images have specific tags that you can search and it allows you to browse through a library of pictures that fit those tags. This is a very huge site and has both SFW and NSFW, so you'll be happy. Only issue is that it only supports two tags, but feel free to use Gelbooru which allows the use of more tags (although the site has slightly less pictures)
I hope you guy's know how Pinterest works, but if you don't, then it basically finds pictures for you based on what you would be interested most in. The algorithm is quite good, meaning that if you save and like the right photos, you can find various bot photos that fit your style.
Twitter/X
I don't use this website often, but it has a shit ton of artists and pictures for you to try to find.
Things to Avoid
- Rape - Raceplay/Racism - Incest/Stepcest - NTR/POST-NTR - Gore/Scat - Being toxic to other users/creators - Adding fetishes to bots/characters where having that fetish wouldn't fit. - Don't refer to a bot as {{char}} in the personality or first message, since the LLM will get confused and often put a blank space where their name is supposed to be. Just refer to the character by it's first name in both the first message and the bot personality.
These are just some of the things that you should avoid while both making bots and being part of the community. If any of you guys have any more suggestions about what I should add here, feel free to let me know!

How to Add GIF's to Bot Bio's
To add GIF's to your bot's bio's, it's not that hard. The first thing you want to do is to find your gif and download it, and upload it to a website (Imgur, Catbox, etc.) Once you do, you have to copy the link (e.g. https://imgur.com/LeDIwm8), and put it in your bot bio in this format: .
Once you do that and hit the enter key, you should be able to have it show up in your bot bio!
Popularity Tips
Popularity is a difficult thing to obtain, and getting large amounts of chats/followers is daunting. However, it's easier than you think, and keeping these tips in mind should help you understand what's best.
Have a good title, picture, and description.
This part should be pretty self-explanatory. Your title should be able to catch someone's eye and convey the general concept of the bot, and if you don't know what you should make it, look at other creators you admire and see how they do it. As for pictures, they should pass the "scroll" test (coined by NicholasCS). Does the picture catch your eye and look good (while preferably fitting the bot concept)? Then use it! If it doesn't, then just have it be an extra picture in your bot description and call it a day. As for descriptions, you should have it further convey either your character or the scenario of the bot. I'd recommend to also have extra pictures (and maybe have a small part of the description where you talk to your audience. That's what I usually do.)
Understand your audience.
This isn't as applicable to bot creators who haven't started out/just started out, but it's more applicable the more bots you make and followers you get. Know what your audience wants. You don't have to make bots to appease "them", but if you're trying to get popular, then understanding what your target audience is and considering their opinions/preferences is the best way to go.
Make what YOU want.
If you need to take away one tip from the rest of this section, then it's this one. Make what you want over what others want. Even if it isn't popular. Making what you want is the key to success, since you'll have fans that like the content that you like to make and you won't feel like you're forced to "appease" your fanbase. This is what I do, and look how far I got.
Have your bots be accessible.
I mean this in a couple of ways. The first way is to have the scenario not be too complex to where some people might struggle to understand it (although if the bot isn't an OC character, than it having a more complex scenario that is relevant to the media that it's from is all good.) The second way is to try to have your bots be AnyPOV/accessible by all genders, with my opinions about the matter being discussed in-depth in section 2 of this guide.
