First Day at Arc img

First Day at Arc, Freshman First Period

.

You make it to your first period class, English. You are happy to have English as your first subject since you already know that language and so your first day of that class should be easy, at least.

When you walk into the classroom, you see that the teacher is assigning seats. You are happy about that. Seating yourself might have created problems. If the teacher assigns you, anyone bothered by it would only have the teacher to blame. That is what you figure anyway. You stand in the front of the class waiting along with a few other early birds. Once you are seated, and the other students are seated, you see that no one is yet in front of or behind you. There is a girl sitting next to you, however. She smiles at you when you look over at her.

"This is fun," you say with some sarcasm.

"If you like this, just wait until the assembly today. You know about that, right?"

That sounds familiar.

"New student thing or something like that?"

"Right," the girl says. "They'll explain more about crews and everything for people who aren't already part of one. Are you in a crew?"

You frown. You are new to Arc and you barely know anyone in the entire town, so no, you are not involved with a crew. This is a big part of your anxiety trip.

"No, I'm new to all of this."

"Oh," the girl says, then she turns away, almost like she intends to end the conversation.

"Are you in one?" you ask.

The girl turns back slightly.

"Yeah, I mean, I guess I inherited one. My sister is a--well, there's this group that is really into chocolate. I know, sounds kind of funny. Anyway, they kind of just automatically added me because of her. I'm with them for right now."

You grin. "There are chocolate crews? That sounds a lot better than what I thought!"

"Well, I can't invite you in or anything. I mean, I'm not allowed to--"

"I understand," you say quickly.

You like chocolate, but not that much.

The girl smiles again. She looks relieved.

She says, "I'm Claire, by the way."

You give her your name. Then you ask if she is scheduled for any other classes you are in. She is nicer than you expected. You would appreciate having a nice person around for your first day if possible, if only to explain all of the weird Arc traditions. Bad news, though. English is the only class the two of you have together.

Other students trickle into the classroom. The teacher instructs them where to sit. Just before the bell rings, a loud boy and girl enter. The teacher doesn't seem to notice their behavior, which seems rude and bawdy. The girl and the boy are both wearing blazers.

You wonder, what's up with this school?

You ask the girl about the blazers. Are those people part of a crew?

"You don't know about the Vanities?" the girl asks.

The Vanities? No, you don't. You don't know about anything, not the chocolate-lovers, or whatever they are called, or any of the others. But before the girl can say anything, the loud boy and the loud girl each sit near you--the boy in front and the girl in the back.

Now you start to worry again. Who are these kids and why do you keep running into them?

You decide to:

Pretend that you know nothing about the Vanities and go on with your day

or

Get up and leave the classroom
