top 9 reasons why janitor ai isn't cool (skip if you'd like)
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- moderation (the moderation isnt all too swag and they are really overworked, and the site "might as well be unmoderated" also shep is lazy.. bla, bla, something, something
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- privacy

uhm..okay so you're saying you have access to my private chats...? oh.. that doesn't settle well in the back of my mind.. eek. bye-bye account, nope.
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- shep is sketch
yes!!11 much trues. zomg:
https://www.reddit.com/r/JanitorAI_Refuges/comments/1qi4ufh/please_do_not_give_shep_your_money_or_your_data_i/
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- censorship
hi.. i mean.. like, it was always censored (dead dove) and who likes censorship?? not me, teehee. if you wanted to create a char thats absolutely morally debatable (nsfl, anything) or whatever you should be able to! but you cant do that on janitor (or with some silly tag), womp.
You came to janitor FOR the freedom to make whatever ya' want (especially if you migrated from c.ai) and you don't even have it en earnest (you never did, frankly. dunno why my eccentric arse started noticing it up until recently OuO).
that's also why you should consider self hosting because its ran on cloud essentially! and nobody will ever be the wiser of whatever shenanigans you get up to in your leisure time, also, you don't have to worry about rules or anything, really.
Also, censoring images? uhm, no thanks, i want to see everything, gimmie it all. ( ⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝)
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- the llm is garbage.
everyone knows this. also shep refuses to fix it and even if a subscription was released it would never change. it isnt as bad as character.ai's llm (~3000 base context, ~5000 for plus members) but it isn't decent, especially if you have prospects of large stories (evidently, you could use chat history but constantly having to go back to that and summarize stuff every few minutes is exceedingly annoying, now, having it done automatically? thats perfect!)
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- there's better platforms out there (if you dont want to self host)
yes, there are and you, infact, do not have to put up with janitor's malarkey cause' its the 'only option out there' so stop saying that to yourself right meow!
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- it goes down a lot and queues are stupid
yes! it actually reminds me of the old character ai queues and those were BAD if you were there when old.character.ai was a thing. also im never waiting in line to friggin roleplay again, you should be able to do it whenever you want without being hit with "approx. wait time: 30 minutes", like, what deh frig?? >:{
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- Error 500s/Tempature
seriously, im not sure what shep is doing over there but you have a 50/50 chance of getting a reply (and its usually sucky) if you use any of the free deepseek models on openrouter and its ONLY on janitor! not even kidding
and they done' frigged up the tempature, not sure at all what it was set to but it makes deepseek schizo even on cooler temps and it gets worse on anything slightly higher with top p at 0.95
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- drama
icky. drama is not swag, dude!! especially when its rampant on my platform? nuh-uh, buh-bye, im a solitary critten, i don't want to hear about it, already fleeing and finding sanctuary in another hidey-hole.
.:|{=============================================================================================}|:.
- in conclusion:
Janitor sux, even if it may be accessible. no more janitor, nuh-uh, never EVER again, gots' to move onto bigger, and better things! like.. right now, actually. if that wasn't enough you can look through here, i, personally, dont involve myself with it (and i cant bring myself to care for it.. swrey D: ):

Self-Hosted Alternatives
if you're messing around with llm stuff with openai you should do it on separate browser other than your daily driver and revoke all internet access to it so that your stuff isnt phoned by openai
self hosted means its ran on node and or your localhost.
- silly tavern (ofc) <-- guide on how to set up
i highly advise you do.. I mean, there's SO many options that you could spend hours on end messing around with settings & css.
- andriod/docker guide: https://docs.sillytavern.app/installation/android-(termux)/
(you can also use tailscale)
for ios people, if you have a pc just host st on there first and then connect to it with your device. also, you can try using a cloudflare tunnel
btw sillytavern can be used to not only roleplay but code- like, i mean anything, you're still working with an llm after all, customize it how you see fit.
also, learning how llms function can help you roleplay better among other things.. you dont need to know the nitty gritty, but, more than a baseline understanding of it can aid you exceptionally

Cloud API's
you should really know that cloud./free apis snag client data, so, the prompt you sent, the email you used, the api key, etc.. hecc you, open ai/anthropic. run models locally if you arent comfortable with dat knowledge.
so, one of the main ways youll being paying for models is by paying as you go (payg), is described as:
"Adding money to your account and the input and output tokens (the text the AI reads and writes) consume this balance. For the average user, this is the cheapest way to use an AI because you only pay for what you use and when you use it."
The other is by subscriptions which multiple providers offer.
okay, last thing before i get into it. you can find prices of online llms here (per million tokens): https://countless.dev/ & https://nano-gpt.com/pricing
table of models https://rentry.org/aicg_meta
Here are the ones actually worth paying for and are affordable:
- https://platform.deepseek.com/ <--
(cheap, no, it acutally puts the 'cheap' in cheap- its actual cents on the offical api. its also unrestricted and decent if you use a proper prompt.)
ENABLE SINGLE USER MESSAGE ON POST PROSSESING IF YOURE USING ST PLEASE
- Gemini <--
(cheap/free offers a handful of credits, check the git redirect to read more about it. its possible to still do nsfw stuff, just avoid certain words. it is good at creative writing but can go schizo a lot.) - GLM <--
cheap/free. - Claude
More creative than gpt but lacks knowledge in more niche things. - Grok <--
(good at nsfw stuff) - chatgpt
exceedingly smart, however filtered to all hell. - Kyria
only really good for image generation - Kimi K2 <--
(not onpar with deepseek but its fine, rather refreshing.) - nanogpt <--
(offers a wide variety of models including unrestricted glm. one of the better aggravated providers & has amazing support) - litellm <--
dont even use it, please. (https://www.reddit.com/r/LLM/comments/1q57a2h/glad_were_not_the_only_ones_having_serious/)
And, if you actually have money to freely expend:
- Opus <--
this alone should say enough, however: https://files.catbox.moe/7vi3za.png
there is no 'best' model. its up to your own preferences, so, go crazy- try out different llms and find ones you like.
typically, you should have a model that's good for specific things, one for sfw, one for nsfw and one that's robust and good at a bit of everything and lastly, one that is creative (or unhinged).
you could look through here and mayhaps find certain llms at a cheaper price: https://rentry.org/aipiracyresources
Providers (Subscriptions)
- electron hub (has a free tier)
- featherless ai
- arli ai
- infermatic ai
- chutes <-- horrendous. never use anything through chutes unless its the only option D:<
- megallm <--
(uses plundered keys, use it if you want but i dont reccomend you do.) - https://www.kluster.ai/pricing <--
(also has a free tier. i think you get about 100$ credits for free)
Basic LLM Knowledge
llms dont actually use words how humans would, no- rather, they predict what to say next given multiple variables (i.e: whats in the context, lorebooks, temp, and the user's first input). so that's why your first message is always kind of crucial. it dictates how the model will phrase stuff throughout the rp. you can, however, always 'nudge' it in the right direction (or gaslight it by editing messages lul) by doing a 'see dont tell' kind of thing. you can check out character section for more stuff regarding this, but thats a brief overview.
oh, yeah, and llms are not at ALL creative because of this- it can't just on a whim generate a whole story for you, nuh-uh, it'd eventually devolve into a fine, soupy paste that barely resembles a 'story'. you have to FEED it things for you to get whatcha want out of it, and that's where prompts and other things come in to direct the llm into doing the thing you want it to do the damn best that it can. llms are like kit but imagine if kit had a bunch of databases sifiting through its mind on lots of things, you still gots to guide it and it'll eventually get it right on its own- perhaps not exactly on the first try, but you could ease it into it.
llms loveee repeating patterns as well, so, you could, in practice, capitalize on this fact and do as what you may with it, however it could also be a detriment if not applied correctly..
actually, its recommended to not use 'i' and rather refer to your character by name. ALSO gone with the quotes, it can confuse the llm into believing its generating a novel.
https://rentry.co/v2pwu4b4 <-- (stuff regarding LLM parameters)
https://rentry.co/5buop79f <-- (how things are sampled in order..)
https://rentry.co/4ma7np82 <-- (how to structure prompts for LLMS)
Tokens
llms actually don't read plain text, so, for instance you'd read this description as is:
"On the darkest of nights, be afraid! Lock your doors, secure your windows, and most importantly of all... Hide your valuables! Not like that would help. B E C A U S E ! The greatest Catkin thief, {{char}}, is prowling the moon-kissed, city rooftops, looking for her new victim!"
this is what the llm gets:
[2219, 290, 138634, 328, 24018, 11, 413, 24894, 0, 24613, 634, 18282, 11, 11846, 634, 14387, 11, 326, 1645, 33766, 328, 722, 1008, 54854, 634, 176414, 4175, 2874, 1299, 484, 1481, 1652, 13, 793, 33, 457, 363, 355, 601, 336, 457, 27498, 976, 16983, 19288, 6342, 106886, 11, 12521, 3257, 84100, 382, 100987, 3321, 290, 28479, 10897, 182727, 11, 5030, 84786, 4645, 11, 3778, 395, 1335, 620, 26036, 4175]
all which we know to be tokens. the above example is what gpt-5 would generate
the price of llms are dictated by tokens the input (or prompt) you give to the llm and the output (or response.). that is why prices can differentiate drastically from one llm to another, its all based on how tokens are processed.
one word does not translate into one token. whole phrases can be translated into tokens. btw, emojis are counted. "138634" for instance would be "darkest of night", or "24018" would be "be afraid!"
Context
context essentially dictates how much the llm can process at once, or, its 'memory' and its capacity of story telling. It is a determinent of how much stuff you cram into it before it starts to struggle relaying that information over.
i would like to draw your attention to this,
because a certain llm may have a bigger maximum context size than others doesn't mean its better or more efficient (100,000+), no, because it isnt. its still an llm and will forget/graze over details the more stuff you feed it. that is also why you should give the llm an allotted amount of tokens so that iti has a cut-off point, and with what you intend to be doing with it you definitely wont need all of that.``
llms with bigger context windows are prone to forget, ignore commands and will default back to repeating itself.
The usual context window is around 16k tokens, however you can get away with 24k or 30k tokens if youre doing a larger story.
Prompts
what you put into the prompt you get out. put scientific jargon in the prompt? get more scientific and articulated responses. put little within the prompt? get short responses. the llm will essentially copy and paste stuff, so know what you want to do with your master prompt. Exceptionally silly, unhinged and cutesy along with excessive emoji spam utter dribble that'll melt your mushy brain? you can have it, just write it on in and utilize an instance of it once and itll pick up on it..

Local Models
actually, running models locally can be better than using an online llms! honestly, you can get models that aren't even geared towards roleplaying to do so cuz of how llms function!! (dont expect the writing to be amazing or anything though) also you can get rid of repetitive phrases (anti-slop it) among other stuff that online llms do not offer if you like that extra bit of customization
ALSOOO since local models are, well, local, you don't need internet to run them, yippie!!
also, running locally doesn't cost you any money!! ^^

Card Importing
if you want to import cards from janitor use this (if proxy is NOT applicable you cannot scrape the char. if proxy IS on however, you may scrape the char, however you need to have a proxy connected to return back with the description & other stuff. You can just use any api, anything will work:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/janitor-ai-scraper/
https://sleazyfork.org/en/scripts/537206-janitorai-character-card-scraper
https://sleazyfork.org/en/scripts/563685-janitorai-openrouter-prompt-snatcher
also, you should use the chars you extract privately and do not reup, especially if you are editing them :3
you could also use sillytavern's one but its a bit buggy.
https://git.evulid.cc/cyberes/char-archive-scraper <--- (the full character archive server (do note that this is NOT beginner friendly and you do need some prerequisite knowledge about technology stuff. also, you need a decent amount of storage to install the torrent to run the full archive but it does have well over 400k+ cards. some unsavory stuff may be on there as well, so discretion is advised.)
https://github.com/sproutingnerd/char-archive-small_frontend <--- (smaller verison of the full archive. once more you need to have some knowledge on technology stuff and how to setup docker/use unbuntu. Theres a setup guide in there if youre clueless)
here are some sites if you aren't up to any of that but creating your own is best, guides below this section:
- Chub.Ai <--
(please use this: https://gist.github.com/khanonnie/b357f20bfe4e920d8e05fd47f1e6fa75 if you decide to get cards from there. wayyy too many low quality bots on there, lul. - Janitor.AI <--

they suck. just use the scraper instead D: - Backyard.ai

Tutorial/Templates:

Botmaking
yess! stuff pretaining to making chars! anyone can make a char, you dont need to be a writer or super eloquent or anything like that.
okay, im going to mention this here because i see A LOT of beginners do this. never put 'dont speak for {{user}}' within the character description.. EVER. firstly, it only causes the darn problem and secondly you only put stuff that is essential to the char within the character description! infact, just get rid of 'never speak for {{user}}' all-together from your master prompt, it really can be contributing to it. final time: permanent tokens go in the character description ya' silly, not temporary stuff D:
oh yeah, here's a character editor if you needed one: https://desune.moe/aichared/

.:|{========================================================================}|:.
Ali:Chat
okay, so, basically alichat is a method of character description formatting. it is built on the premise of using example dialogue to reinforce certain behavior or mannerisms in an interview like way. its rather easy for beginners and encourages your creativity (because you have to actually put yourself ni the shoes of your character.)
its more of a guide then an actual template to adhere to, so its real flexible in that sense. you can insert anything you believe relevant. an example is provided below from the pygmalion ai wiki discussing this entry

https://rentry.co/alichat <-- the original rentry discussing alichat by alicat
.:|{========================================================================}|:.
PLlist
a plist is a way to list character traits in a more token efficient way. it should be accompanied by Ali:Chat. every character falls into an archetype, either it be stubborn, catty or even aloof, so instead of putting a whole paragraph pertaining to your char's personality you could instead list what personality archetypes they fall under and then utilize Ali:Chat to flesh them out more- simple, right? ^w^
you are not restricted to only putting personality adjacent things. you can put the scenario, appearance, clothing--anything that you believe is relevant, writing styles, movies, etc.. once more you can read more about it on the pygmalion ai botmaking introduction page
pllist should be added at the bottom of your description because context really hones in on the bottom part
if you still dont get it (as i briefly covered it) you can consult thisguide
.:|{========================================================================}|:.
Lorebooking
when you're approaching a lorebook think of it as a scripting block.. you can place anything you want with it and inject it anywhere since we know llms just run off context. So, in practice, you could put a whole section of char's personality and store it for whenever the chat reaches a certain point, or, anything, really, whole portions of 'memories' if you wanted. You can effectively make a lorebook out of anything you want, even if its just to save on tokens.
(okay, ill throw this in here as well: its extremely diffcult to grab lorebooks from janitor if it isnt public. you can, however, get some stuff via asking the llm directly because of how eager they are to eat up your requests however youll only really get tidbits so you have to infer with some things and with a wiki on hand you should just about be able to make it from the bottom up. if it is public, however, you can just export it copy the plain text, tags, and whatever else and with a bit of effort you've sucessfully imported a janitor.ai lorebook)
https://rentry.co/SillyT_Lorebook

.:|{========================================================================}|:.
Roleplaying
https://rentry.org/Sukino-Guides <-- How to effectively roleplay and make the most of your turns. May also help with producing cards, cause' this definitely helped me. I limited myself to being very robotic when putting stuff in the description and describing {{char}} when my writing style is real whimsical, so, its nice to know that i can actually do that, yipeee!! READ IT NOW!! RIGHT NOW ACTUALLY :3
https://docs.sillytavern.app/usage/core-concepts/macros/ <-- this is applicable for all 3 categories btw, not just rp.
Did you know there were other macros excluding {{char}} and {{user}}? (i.e: {{random}}/{{pick}}/{{roll:XdY+Z}}, where x is the die number and y is the sides while Z is the modifier) I didn't know for awhile, but its fun to mess around with XD

Image Generation:
approach it as you would with text generation, out with the ones you don't like and keep the ones you do. you can fix small flaws easily and if you really want you may use procreate.
https://www.reddit.com/r/SillyTavernAI/comments/1ldm019/seamless_image_generationreddit_guide/
Downloadable Lb/Wi
yes, its mainly things that ive imported from janitor. credits given to the people who actually made the lorebooks, of course. ill populate this whenever i actually do import lorebooks (because i usually like making my own for specific chars), so, for now, ya' get 2. :p
theres a difference between worldinfo and a lorebook btw. world info pertains to, well, information about the world. lorebooks refer to, well, the lore behind characters or things along that line
save the files as jsons btw and import them

IT ISNT BROKEN THIS TIME. btw, the person who did this didn't really understand what they were doing, which is okay. splitting them all into different entries to be called upon when a certain keyword arises is smarter. uhmm maybe ill redo it)

TTS
uhm.. i have never tried anything relating to tts lest it only being setting up multitts with ttserver so that i can use edge voices on moon reader- but, ill just add this in here for the sake of it. ill populate this with more stuff as i find it. check out hugging face for more tts models

Learning The Intricacies Of LLMS
if you really want to learn you need to read and find things and gobble it up and have an interest in it, of course..

Troubleshooting (ST)
one common one is regarding putting in your key.. don't press the key icon, it initially is supposed to create a new key for you and connect to it for you, however that function seems to be extremely buggy. Put in your key manually, create a new secret and then press 'connect'
repetition? the model rattling off and doing actions for the user? Chinese characters? generally random stuff in thinking? -- usually, this a byproduct of your own settings temperature, top k/top p. now, you could fiddle around with it yourself and resolve it or ask chatgpt!! you can have it produce master-settings for the model and find that 'sweet spot'
if you're wondering why you're burning over well over two cents per response if the model you're using supports web search, by all means, disable 'web search' as it adds a fee per prompt when enabled.
Tips
if you wish for more rich, realistic dialogue ask the llm to speak from a specific pov and/or writer (remember, llms trained off books aswell), you can choose from a plethora of writers and it'll pick up on it.
put ooc stuff in xml tags like this:
<system_notice>
[text]
<\system_notice>
also, dont overuse ooc commands, they are meant to be quick corrections.
you can toggle on/off if reasoning is to be intergrated into text or its own separate dropdown with st.
use lorebooks/wi to your advantage- perhaps you're roleplaying about niche webcomic, the llm certainly wouldn't know anything about that. to remedy this, create a lorebook about the world and decide when it should be injected and where it is to be placed
when you make persona keep it under 400 tokens or so. if you need certain information stuff it into a lorebook.
to avoid impersonation all together dont even put anything relating to it within your prompt. also, low quality cards can be of the cause of impersonation since they just amount to instructions and context. some models, however, are more inclined to speak and/or do actions for the user (if the reasoning isnt all too good)
Vector Storage (ST)
vector storage is a rag, which basiclly allows llms to get new information from external sources.
vector storage is useful in long rps, allowing the llm to 'remember' events from many messages ago, however its tad bit difficult to set up (its worth it though) XD
it is possible for it to function with local transformers with software such as ollama but you can also use cloud ones.

Vibe Coding
essentially, its just assisted coding, really. you can either turn off your brain and have the llm do everything for you or do it yourself and have it assist you and point you in the right direction if you run into any errors or anything. its also used to build apps n' stuff because yes, ai has finally progressed to such a point. because of this im sure most humans would be capable of vibe coding. does this mean traditional coding is becoming obsolete...? no, silly.
https://www.reddit.com/r/vibecoding/ <-- the goods..
you can make a prompt yourself for this!! also any cloud model would suffice
Reverse Proxy
okay, in essence reverse proxy allows you to mask all that yummy client data among other stuff. is it a security mechanism? no. should you go through the hassle of setting it up with your local model or cloud model? uhm.. if you want
https://nginx.org/en/ <-- generally used.
https://github.com/sgasser/pasteguard <-- this is vibe coded btw. you need docker as well.
