how do rape culture and purity culture affect people?

we live in a society where rape is accepted and/or encouraged. every 68 seconds, one American is sexually assaulted. 1 out of every 6 AFAB people have been raped, and 1 out of every 33 AMAB have been raped. purity culture plays in to sexual abuse in a huge way. 1 in 4 AFAB children and 1 in 6 AMAB children will be sexually abused before they turn 18 years old. women ages 16-19 are more likely to experience sexual violence. how does that play into purity culture? well, I think Matt Walsh's views on the bodies of people AFAB are a huge example of that.

"ever since the beginning of time, teenage girls have been getting pregnant. it used to be more common. the peak- well, ever since they started keeping records of these things, which they only started doing recently, like in the 20th century- but ever since they started keeping records, in 1957 was the peak for teenage pregnancy. 1957. not 2009, not today. ... so to all of the sudden act like this phenomenon of girls getting pregnant at a young age- we consider young, 16 or 17- to act like it's a new thing is ridiculous. it's always been that way. even biologically, and this is just me stating facts, so fact number one: it's not a new phenomenon. fact number two: it's a phenomenon that was more common earlier in history, inaudible, it was a normal thing. fact three: girls between the ages of, like, 17 and 24 is when they're technically most fertile."

these beliefs show a clear fetish in the "purity" of young people AFAB. because of sexual expectations of AFAB people, (i.e. submission, weak, innocence) young AFAB people are expected to sexualize themselves. but that, in and of itself, is a contradiction. when AFAB people are "too sexual", they are disgusting, and when they aren't, they are a tease. purity culture also affects men because they're expected to be dominant. it's why men are not shamed for having high "body counts"- they are expected to be dominant. deviation from a dominant persona results in men being shamed. men are expected to have sex at young ages because of a dominant personality.

this is why young girls and boys are so easily groomed and suffer sexual abuse at more frequent rates than adults. have you ever heard a man congratulate a younger boy for having sex with an older woman (like a "MILF" or "cougar")? this is a result of rape culture. it is not a flex for a 15 year old boy to be raped by a 40 year old woman, and yet it's treated like an achievement by many. and when a young girl is raped by an older man, they are victim-blamed, and often are told things like "you should dress more modestly," or "i would have raped you too, if i saw you looking like that." in both cases, the perceived man is the one being congratulated for the sexual act, regardless of how or why it happened, and if it's appropriate in the first place.

as much as perceived women CAN be rapists, as i mentioned previously, 99% of rapists are perceived men. 99% men. whether it's a girl or a boy being raped, it's usually a man doing it. young boys are groomed into believing that this kind of entitled behavior is okay. they are raised to put these sort of expectations on themselves, that sex is everything, and that if they don't get sex, they are a loser, or it's because of their penis size, or weight, or height, or hair loss, or any other body insecurity that might be thrust societally upon men. combine these insecurities with the sense of entitlement, and you get men who attack women for not giving them what they want. saying that they don't understand why women only date "bad guys," or that they only date tall, handsome, rich men. you get men treating women like objects. i know plenty of women who would love to date fat men, or "losers" or "nerds" or whatever- they just expect to be treated like people, not like children or mothers or objects or property. just humans.

it's just a miserable situation for everyone. people deserve the freedom to be themselves, without the threat of rape or isolation or humiliation being hung over their heads.

is universal healthcare actually important?

universal healthcare is so extremely important. healthcare is such an incredibly classist system. you should not have to pay for something you need to survive, point blank. people can and will die if they do not get the help they need, regardless of whether it's a physical problem or mental problem. there are 132 suicides every single day, that is an issue. half of the problem with this is societal, but the other half is expensive therapy rates. you should not have to pay to be happy. you should not have to pay for a right to live.

every single person is important. i think it's disgusting that this is even a debate; especially when schools require a doctor's note for a sick day, but not every child is insured; especially when trans people are committing suicide because they can't receive gender affirming care; especially when women are being harassed every day and raped, but denied the access to an abortion to ensure a better life for themself, and whoever that baby could've been; especially when those with invisible disabilities have to visit several doctors over several years just to find one that believes them.

living should not be a debate. life is an unalienable right.
