The Essential 3D Motion Design Glossary

https://www.google.com/search?q=A+guide+to+all+the+3D+motion+design+terms+you+need.
Cryptic "VFX" comments from supervisors 🏴☠️
https://crypticcomments.tumblr.com/
inspiration from TV commercials and Always. Everything you see on a screen can be an inspiration.
Look for the good stuff to inspire. Look for bad stuff to know what to avoid.
In conclusion,
The video/3D design field
doesn't require certifications and focuses primarily on portfolios.
While it varies by company, you need to confirm which tools they use.
For game companies, proficiency in Unity and Unreal Engine is required.
For video companies, you need to be skilled in the tools used by the specific video company you're targeting.
When creating, get inspiration mostly from
Behance + Pinterest + YouTube.
It's not just about watching motion graphics; the more diverse genres you see—math videos, etc.—the better.
It's also good to search for UI designs from popular recent games.
If you don't play games, you should actively search for and gather plenty of video or screenshot references yourself.
When see designers producing their output, I'm curious about how they made it,
but what I'm most curious about is, “How did they even think to make it like this?”
While mastering tools and creating stunning graphics is important,
believe designers with truly excellent design skills are those who also skillfully plan what to express and how to convey it through those graphics.
As came to understand the importance of planning,
realized that planning is actually the crucial backbone of all creative work. Yet, it's also something everyone overlooks and finds difficult.
However,
Most of the challenges designers face are generally solved by time and experience.
While everyone has different sites they visit, for example,
I primarily collect references by regularly checking X (Twitter), Behance, and watching a wide variety of YouTube content. set aside specific days for reference scraping
though this varies by person and situation and make it a habit to save around 300 images with distinct moods on those days, based on photos.
While building this habit, memorize the social media accounts of dozens of my favorite creators.
If there are too many, document and save hundreds of them separately.
Before starting a video project, go through all the social media feeds of dozens of these creators, reviewing each piece of work one by one to use as reference.
In fact, it's crucial to view and record a lot of resources themselves on a regular basis.
However, important point to note is
that this applies not only to drawing but to all design fields.
When aiming to improve your skills by ‘doing 10 croquis sketches daily!’,
the goal isn't simply to fill 10 sheets.
While doing those 10 sketches, you need to ‘understand’ why you're drawing them this way.
If you keep drawing without understanding, your skills won't improve.
The same applies to design.
Why did you use this grid? Why this color? Why this photo? etc.
Understanding the context is a crucial part of the process.
The idea that you need to use a lot of many use tools to improve your skills,
it doesn't mean just masking 1000 images.
It means researching how to achieve cleaner results through various methods during the masking process
and exploring ways to make it more efficient.
There's no single right answer with design tools; you can take different paths as long as you reach your goal.
So, research how to work more efficiently and whether your methods are easy for others to understand if shared.
When problems or issues arise,
knowing how to step back and find solutions is what truly means mastering the tools.

https://www.reddit.com/r/graphic_design/comments/b9ynax/should_a_graphic_designer_have_hisher_own/
What must one do to become a creative designer?
In all fields of art,
Seeing a lot doesn't mean viewing without thought.
See a lot to find works you love.
Then, analyze why you love those works.
And apply what you've analyzed to your own work.
While the implication is to see a lot,
the crucial point is this: after seeing, find your own feelings within it.
If you need to apply it practically right now,
knowing the theory first is more important than just looking at a lot of things.
Once you feel you have a certain level of theory, looking at a lot of things becomes important.
Just as knowing the theory is important,
finding your own ‘I like this’ points is crucial.
For example,
why you like it, what points are practical, and why the parts that aren't practical aren't practical.
https://www.reddit.com/r/graphic_design/comments/zy4buy/whats_a_graphic_design_trend_you_dislike/
What’s a graphic design trend you dislike?
Honestly, I'm not sure how meaningful design trends really are.
I don't know if they'll get a lot of immediate reactions,
but I also don't know if they make for a good portfolio or if they're good design.
It actually feels like blatantly chasing trends.
Design trends change frequently,
and I'm not sure if these elements will still be good for a portfolio in 1-2 years.
However, while it's good to know trends and use them when absolutely necessary,
I don't think it's necessary to force yourself to chase them.
i was busy imitating elements or parts of videos that just looked cool
or seemed technically impressive,
But, understand that video
is a container for conveying my emotions.
Once clearly define the intent behind every effect, design element,
and detailed aspect incorporate,
and the emotional message becomes transparent,
whether it's in video direction or any other aspect,
I see significant growth in the very things I'm doing.
2. “Resources, Community, Portfolio” for 3D Work Support
It's an abstract concept, but
there's a misconception had since student days
the idea that you have to pour immense effort into creating a portfolio just once, making it perfect like a final piece.
Designers work constantly,
so portfolios need to be rebuilt several times a year.
Especially portfolios and projects made years ago as practice—they're actually useless anywhere.
So honestly, you can just make it however you feel like making it.
The experience of creating a portfolio itself is valuable.
By looking back at your portfolio work,
you can judge and reflect on what's usable
and what's unusable.
The process of organizing your work folders, creating mockups, and looking at other people's portfolios while making your portfolio

Recent job support sites for PDs and editors in Korea's YouTube industry tech/IT sector include
유튜브 공지나 채널별 카페 / DOF LOCK 카페 / 필름메이커스 / 편집몬 / 잡코리아 etc.
But the reality is, there are few job postings, and even if you apply, you won't get an interview opportunity.
So, if it's in the area where my live, it's good to attend gatherings where people in that industry meet,
and there's a lot of on-site recruiting, so starting with outsourcing is also fine.

In Korea, the leading CG academies are S1 Academy, CG5, SF Film, and EnjoyCG.
If you're specifically aiming for a job at a game company, I recommend EnjoyCG.
Some of the most recommended 3D motion graphics academies in Korea include 브이다스, 105클래스.
For 2D motion graphics academies in Korea, 모션이즈, 모션랩 are good options.
Even if you're unsure of your exact direction, recommend these Korean academies.

It's common to get academy recommendations or enroll together through acquaintances or connections.
As a side note, confiding your worries to a chatbot (AI) can provide surprisingly good career counseling.

✨ 3. Guide to Discovering “Otaku 3D Motion Graphics - BGA” Artists
Copy and paste the text top into the
https://gemini.google.com/
chatbot(gemini, chatgpt etc)!
and, Set Gemini to “Thinking, Pro Mode” and ask GPT your questions.
and, keep replying "yes!" in the chat, and it will provide specific introductory methods.
This guide is for those seeking unique, highly distinctive 3D motion graphics works
distinct from typical searches (cinematic animations, product ads, etc.).
Discovering Otaku 3D Motion Graphics—or BGAs (Background Animations)—is an journey into a high-energy niche where abstract 3D art, typography, and glitch aesthetics collide with rhythm game culture and J-core music. This style is often characterized by "Otaku Tech": high-contrast, mechanical, and hyper-kinetic visuals.
Here is a guide to finding the artists and hubs that define this scene.
1. Primary Discovery Hubs
To find these artists, you need to look where rhythm game content and independent music videos (MVs) live.
- BMS Events (The Core): The BMS (Be-Music Source) community is the birthplace of the BGA aesthetic.
- BOFU / G2R / BOFXV: Search for these annual competitions on YouTube. They feature hundreds of songs with custom 3D BGAs. Look for the "Movie" or "BGA" credit in the video descriptions.
- Manbow / BMS Event Database: This is the "listing" site for competitions. You can find team profiles that list dedicated visual artists.
- Rhythm Game Credits: High-end games like DJMAX Respect V, Beatmania IIDX, Arcaea, and Phigros hire the top tier of these artists.
- Tip: Check the "Gallery" or "Music Video" mode in these games and look for the creator credits.
- Vocaloid & VTuber MVs: Many BGA artists have transitioned into high-budget 3D music videos for VTubers (like Hololive or Nijisanji) or independent artists like Camellia or USAO.
2. Key Artists to Follow
The scene is a mix of "old masters" who defined the look and a new wave of "tech-heavy" 3D designers.
| Artist Type | Key Names | Style / Notable Work |
|---|---|---|
| The Legends | yama_ko, murAta Yuzi | Smooth, high-fidelity 3D and 2D-3D hybrids (e.g., Rolling Girl). |
| Abstract / Tech | Optie, Minamotohisa | Hyper-complex mechanical movements and abstract geometry. |
| Vivid / Modern | yoshimo, Radiosity, Pafa | High-energy, colorful, and glitch-heavy motion. |
| Typography-Led | TOHRU MiTSUHASHi | Masters of kinetic typography integrated into 3D space. |
| Rising Stars | Siesphere, TTeokbo, mtboss124 | Active in recent BOF (BMS) events; heavy use of C4D and Blender. |
3. Keywords & Social Media Hunting
Because many of these artists are Japanese or Korean, using specific search terms is vital for discovery.
Essential Hashtags (X/Twitter & Instagram)
#motiongraphics/#mg_portfolio#BGA/#BMS/#BMS_MOVIE#3DCG/#C4D/#AfterEffects#映像制作(Video Production)#モーショングラフィックス(Motion Graphics)
Search Platforms
- Vimeo: The "portfolio" home for high-end motion designers. Search for "BGA" or "Otaku Tech."
- Behance / ArtStation: Search for "Rhythm Game UI" or "3D Motion Design" to find professional-grade breakdowns of BGAs.
- YouTube Channels: Channels like Aonatsu or BMS BGA Collections archive videos specifically for their visual merit.
4. The "Otaku Tech" Aesthetic
If you are looking for a specific sub-genre, search for "Otaku Tech" (often associated with Honkai Impact 3rd or Arknights style visuals). This style focuses on:
- Mechanical HUDs: Intricate, moving user interfaces.
- Flat-Shaded 3D: 3D objects that look like high-end 2D anime art (using Cel-shading).
- Kinetic Typography: Text that moves in perfect sync with the beat, often in Japanese/English/Code.
Key Pathways to Finding the Right Work?
To find the "right" work in the Otaku 3D Motion Graphics and BGA (Background Animation) niche, you have to move beyond traditional job boards like LinkedIn. This industry operates on a high-trust, "scouted" model where the line between fan creator and professional artist is incredibly thin.
The most successful artists in this space—such as yama_ko, Optie, and sskai—rarely apply for jobs; they build "gravity" around their personal brand until agencies and game developers come to them.
1. The Core Ecosystem: Where the Work Lives
In this niche, "the right work" usually falls into three categories:
A. Professional Music Production Agencies
Studios like Hifumi, inc. and Vanguard Sound act as hubs. They don't just produce music; they provide "full-package" creative services to game companies like SEGA (Chunithm/Maimai), Rayark (Cytus), and NEOWIZ (DJMAX).
- The Path: These agencies often keep a "roster" of freelance motion designers. Getting on a roster usually requires a referral or a viral portfolio piece that captures their specific aesthetic (high-contrast, kinetic typography, tech-noir).
B. The "BMS to Pro" Pipeline
The BMS (Be-Music Source) community, specifically events like BOF (The BMS of Fighters), is the industry’s unofficial scouting ground.
- The Strategy: Developers for major rhythm games watch these events to see which BGA artists are pushing technical boundaries. If your work for a hobbyist track gets high "Visual" scores in a BMS event, you are likely to receive a DM for a commercial commission.
C. VTuber MV Production
Agencies like Hololive (Cover Corp) and Nijisanji (AnyColor) are the largest modern consumers of Otaku-style 3D motion graphics.
- The Entry Point: They often hire independent "Movie Creators" for original song MVs. Look for the "Movie" credits in popular VTuber videos; you'll see the same names recurring. Many of these artists started by making fan-made PVs (Promotion Videos) for their favorite talents.
2. Positioning Your Portfolio
A standard "graphic design" portfolio will not work here. You need to demonstrate "Otaku Tech" Literacy.
- Software Mastery: Your reel should highlight proficiency in After Effects (for compositing) paired with Cinema 4D or Blender. Specifically, show your ability to sync visuals to high-BPM music (170–200+ BPM).
- The "Reel" Style: In this niche, your reel is the work. It shouldn't just show clips; the reel itself should be a high-effort motion piece with its own custom soundtrack and editing.
- Showcase Platforms: Use Foriio or Note.com (popular in Japan) alongside X (Twitter). Traditional sites like Behance are less frequently checked by Japanese/Korean creative directors in this specific scene.
3. Active Networking & Visibility
Since this is a "DM-driven" industry, visibility is your primary currency.
- The "X" Strategy: Almost all BGA/Motion commissions happen via X. Use tags like
#Mograph,#AfterEffects, and#B3D. Follow and engage with "Technical Directors" at studios like Thinkr or Hifumi. - Skeb & Fanbox: Use Skeb for high-end technical commissions. It is a common way for professional directors to "test" an artist with a small paid project before offering a larger commercial contract.
- Discord Communities: Join niche servers like the BMS Development communities or Mograph hubs where artists share project files and "WIPs" (Work in Progress).

For example. Using chatbots like ChatGPT,
use this to create simple expressions [small pieces of code to loop and extend animations]
and scripts for After Effects projects. It’s come in handy for writing scripts to streamline certain processes;
it’s also been helpful in expanding expressions further to be used in slightly different ways.
If you paste an expression, it’ll explain what the code is doing line by line.

However, based on experience,
please be cautious when using AI GPTs like “After Effects” and “ChatGPT, Gemini” together.
To specialize solely in After Effects,
you don't need to study math like “coding” or “JavaScript.”
However, “if you want to create your own After Effects presets,”
some basic math study is required.
But rather than needing difficult math like “high school math,”
I believe what's needed is the mindset to think mathematically.
Mathematical knowledge itself isn't required.
Knowledge equivalent to basic arithmetic operations is sufficient.

being able to think mathematically as demonstrated in the video above,
and having a slight grasp of JavaScript is sufficient.
Studying mathematics isn't the crucial part.
However, the story is completely different when it comes to "Blender" tools.

I asked GPT to create a “Blender node,”
but it doesn't work.
GPT is only for reference when it comes to “Blender nodes.”
This is because Blender's node system itself is complex and has hardly been trained on.
It also struggles with version distinctions.
Still, GPT is good at generating Python code,
and rather than directly creating Blender nodes, it does a good job explaining the functionality of each node.
How to Quickly Learn Blender Nodes
studying Blender nodes,
and if you don't know what each node does.
just keep surfing the web, finding videos, papers, and posts related to Blender nodes,
read them, watch them, experience them, and study that way.
https://docs.blender.org/manual/nb/5.0/index.html
https://t.me/geometrynodes 🏴☠️
Actually,
there's an easier way: this site explains exactly what every Blender node does.
This method
involves accessing the site, pressing Ctrl + F, typing “node”, or
simply typing “node” into the search bar.
If you can read the materials on this site
and understand what they mean, you don't really need to study.
