blackwashing is NOT a thing and is definitely NOT on the same level as whitewashing. this is because whitewashing began when people had shown that they were disgusted by darker skinned characters. they began to draw them with lighter skin, washing a dark character with lighter skin tone, hence the term whitewashing. some people were against it, but sadly the majority of people encouraged it, and the concept of whitewashing soon spread. this mirrors real events that took place in history on how white people were also disgusted seeing black and other toned skin people; their hateful behaviour was encouraged by other white people who had the same idealogy as them. now that whitewashing has been called out on more often, the wave of dark skinned characters turning pale has slowed down. even now, you can still find artists who dislike darker people/characters, drawing them much lighter than they should be; thankfully, people will call them out and spread awareness on why erasing dark skin representation is harmful. now you understand why whitewashing is a bad thing, now i'll connect it back to blackwashing. simply put, dark skinned people wanted more characters that could look similar to them; and nowadays, media is more inclusive, but its not quite enough. thus, people began to draw non-dark characters darker. unlike whitewashing, blackwashing wasnt the result of a bunch of people having a deep hatred for white people and feeling disgusted by them. an example of why blackwashing isnt as harmful as cishet white people on pinterest say is because dark skinned people of any country exist, blackwashing allows a character to keep their culture but just adds an additional race. just like how you can be black and japanese at the same time, it is not harmful to anyone to make a headcanon of raiden ei having darker skin. oh yeah sorry i keep saying darker skin because im trying to include black people and people who arent black but have.... yeah darker skin, like me yay. my favorite hsr headcanons involve mydei, boothill, and phainon having a bit more melanin than their current designs do; no one is getting harmed, no one is being erased, no one is disgusted at anything, we just like adding representation to our favorite characters because this chinese multibillion dollar company hates inclusivity. genuinely dont piss me off by saying that blackwashing is a real thing im going to kill you.
