IS ADDING SYMBOLS NECESSARY? no, but tons of flags have symbols, like pupgender, cufemian & achillean! they aren't necessary, but if you want to add some to yours there are a few options:

1. draw them yourself! if you have artistic abilities outside of flag making — or want to improve them — starting off with simple symbols for your flags is a great way to start!

2. find f2u (free to use) ones on the internet! googling "paw print png" or "cat silhouette png" usually helps me when i can't find a symbol — whether for flags or edits. i personally use flaticon to find symbols for my flags!

WELL, WHAT SYMBOLS SHOULD I ADD?
it depends on the flag, of course, but it should be related to what your flag is based on.

a dog-themed flag could have paw prints, a silhouette of a dog, or even a dog's face to connect back to its definition! if you're unsure what things may relate to your definition , try searching up things like "things related to [x]" , "items associated with [x]" , or similar questions!

your symbols should be pleasing to the eye & easy for anyone to understand when they look at it. they shouldn't have to squint and / or tilt their head to figure out what it's supposed to be.

IS THERE ANY REASON TO? symbols can be chosen for either aesthetic purposes or to convey a meaningful message. a lot of the stuff we established in the beginning applies for aesthetic purposes — so if you want something with meaning , searching up things associated with your flag's definition is sure to help!

they also allow your flag to stand out and be recognizable at a glance, whether for the actual identity or the fact that YOU coined it!

just make sure your symbol doesn't have prior connotations / meanings that may muddy the waters or even just change all the meaning you'd intended with it. some symbols just can't be redeemed.
