How to Patch Tokimeki Memorial Girls' Side Games for CFW Switches or Emulators
A relatively easy guide for TMGS patching, covering CFW and Emulator Installs. Use the Table of Contents to jump to the relevant info.
What You Need For a CFW Switch Install:
- Hekate Bootloader (recommended), or SD card reader, or Tinfoil (not recommended) - this is your entry method
- Atmosphère
- A copy of the game(s) to be patched, installed on the switch, with any required updates. For TMGS 1, 2, and 3, the latest update is 1.0.4, and for TMGS 4 the latest update is 1.1.0.
- The translation patch and any other associated patches for the game(s), extracted on your computer. Make sure this is in its own folder, not loose files!
- EdiZon optionally, for checking your Build IDs
Getting Started:
With Hekate:
Connect your switch to your computer with a USB cable, and then reboot into Hekate. In the Hekate menu, at the top, tap Tools, and then tap the USB Tools button. Once in that menu, tap the SD Card button. Once your switch says Status: Started UMS, open your file explorer on your computer and navigate to the switch, likely under the name USB Drive where your drives and devices are.
Navigate to the atmosphere folder, likely at the root of the USB Drive.
With an SD Card Reader:
I don't recommend this method over Hekate because switch SD Card slots tend to be fragile and the less you have to use them, the better. If you're having trouble with Hekate, though, you can plug the SD Card directly into your computer and navigate to it the same way as mentioned above.
With Tinfoil (not recommended):
Tinfoil is very finicky about file transfers through USB and I would use it only if you cannot make the other methods work for some reason. To access the Tinfoil menu on your PC, plug your switch in with a USB cable and then open Tinfoil. A file explorer window will open automatically once Tinfoil loads, and you will want to navigate to This PC\Switch\microSD Card\atmosphere.
Configuring Atmosphere:
On CFW switches, HBL Takeover is a feature where you can hold the R trigger while launching any game and it will show the homebrew menu instead. The functionality interferes with LayeredFS (by design) and therefore must be disabled in order for our patches to work.
To turn it off:
Edit \atmosphere\config\override_config.ini
override_any_app and override_any_app_key should be commented out by having semicolon ; in the start of the line. This will disable them.
Or you could just copy the default config at this address:
Atmosphere's default override config
Which is a link to Atmosphere's official github page.
Warning!
Remember to safely eject the USB Drive on your computer before removing the cable or reader!
Applying the English Patch:
Once you are in the atmosphere folder, navigate to or create a folder named contents. In this folder, you will want to make a new folder with the titleID of the game you are patching.
TitleIDs:
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 4th Heart: 0100B0100E26C000
Tomoe Yukimichi DLC: 0100B0100E26D001
Onari Isao DLC: 0100B0100E26D002 - Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 1st Love: 0100D9A01BD86000
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 2nd Season: 010079201BD88000
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 3rd Story: 010091C01BD8A000
Inside this folder, create a chain of folders romfs\Data\StreamingAssets. Extract the patch you wish to use (I typically extract it to its own folder first) and then copy the contents of the folder over so it matches up.
So for Girl's Side 1st Love, the file path will look like atmosphere\contents\0100D9A01BD86000\romfs\Data\StreamingAssets and inside the StreamingAssets folder there will be a lang, scenario, and ui folder, as well as two files called global.assetbundle and initialize.assetbundle. Make sure the scenario folder is filled with folders that are labeled a throughz.
The file layout is different for TMGS4 DLCS!
The DLC has two Title IDs.
- Tomoe Yukimichi DLC: 0100B0100E26D001
- Onari Isao DLC: 0100B0100E26D002
The file path for the DLC must look like atmosphere\contents\(TITLE ID HERE)\romfs and inside romfs there should be two folders bg and scenario. scenario should have folders d, t, and y.
Build IDs:
Additionally, you may wish to check your Build IDs to make sure that you applied the correct patches to the correct versions. I personally did not need to. This is able to be done on CFW by running a game, suspending it with the home button, and opening the EdiZon homebrew tool linked above. It will list the Build ID, possibly abbreviated to "BID". Here are the relevant Build IDs:
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 4th Heart:
- Build ID 1.1.0: D6A683602B518969
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 1st Love:
- Build ID 1.0.4: 335C542A89D2B879
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side 2nd Season:
- Build ID 1.0.4: 7278DFDF25D6AE8C
- Tokimeki Memorial Girl’s Side 3rd Story:
- Build ID 1.0.4: BD14C25936C2B966
Name Character Limit Cheat Installation (Required):
If you want to use the cheat for character limits, you will need to start a new game to use it properly. If you downloaded the translation patch from the project, these .txt files may already be in your folders.
The Build IDs listed above are needed to make this cheat work. Inside the atmosphere\contents\<TitleID>\ folder of the relevant game, create a cheats folder. Inside of this folder, make a .txt file that matches the Build ID of the version of game you are using.
For example, the path for 4th Heart would be atmosphere\contents\0100B0100E26C000\cheats\D6A683602B518969.txt.
Inside the .txt file, copy and paste this text if you are applying it to 4th Heart:
[TMGS4 v1.1.0 translation patch]
040F0000 01c0bcb8 5280040a
040F0000 01c0bcdc 5280040a
040F0000 01c0bce8 52800409
040F0000 01e169c4 52800381
040F0000 01e16928 52800381
Inside the .txt file, copy and paste this text if you are applying it to 1st Love:
[TMGS1 v1.0.4 translation patch]
040F0000 021c8128 5280018a
040F0000 021c814c 5280018a
040F0000 021c8158 52800189
Inside the .txt file, copy and paste this text if you are applying it to 2nd Season:
[TMGS2 v1.0.4 translation patch]
040F0000 02102b68 5280040a
040F0000 02102b8c 5280040a
040F0000 02102b98 52800409
Inside the .txt file, copy and paste this text if you are applying it to 3rd Story:
[TMGS3 v.1.0.4 translation patch]
040F0000 01f8e158 5280040a
040F0000 01f8e17c 5280040a
040F0000 01f8e188 52800409
Save the txt file.
Safely Eject your switch, and reboot it, and launch the game. If this worked, congratulations! If menus or text inside the game are inconsistently translated, try this again, as some files may not have copied over.
That's it for installing on a switch!
