Experiment 1006 aka The Prototype

The Prototype, also known as Experiment 1006 or The Claw, is the main antagonist of Poppy Playtime. It first appears in Chapter 1: "A Tight Squeeze". Playtime Co. created it as one of their first successful experiments in an attempt to fulfill the Bigger Bodies Initiative.

It is said that The Prototype was responsible for The Hour of Joy, an event that occurred in the Playtime Co. Factory, resulting in numerous deaths and the company being forced to abandon all of their work. The factory was overrun by savage toys, all of which were influenced by The Prototype's high authority and unintended capabilities.

The Prototype appears multiple times in each chapter, usually towards the end. In Chapter 1, we were told that The Hour of Joy is caused by The Prototype. In Chapter 2, The Prototype is seen dragging Mommy Long Legs' lifeless body. In Chapter 3, The Prototype appears during CatNap's hallucination sequence and after the CatNap boss fight.

Appearance

The Prototype conceals his body in shadows and dark shafts. However, in all his appearances, only his arm is visible. His hands resemble slender silver pins and can make a variety of movements. Despite their delicate appearance, his fingers can effortlessly slice through flesh with unnerving smoothness. His lower arm is adorned with red wires and metallic components, and it also houses a human bone.

Personality

The Prototype's personality is solely built upon his hatred for the Playtime Co. company and his wish for its downfall. He is cunning, stubborn, and rarely displays sarcasm. During Log 24459, in a conversation with Harley Sawyer, The Prototype's voice is heard for the first time as he mockingly mimics the voices of various employees, including Stella Greyber. He speaks about his motivations in a monologue. He questions Harley Sawyer's thoughts on the effects of the Bigger Bodies Initiative and the treatment of experiments. Sawyer comments on learning something new about The Prototype at each meeting. The Prototype sarcastically thanks Harley and repeats the same thing back while imitating his voice.

The Prototype appears to be indifferent to the experiments and uses them as pawns to terrorize, as seen in the RESTRICTED tapes. These tapes show toys being taken over by The Prototype, with the aim of sabotaging the scientists attempts at progress and transportation of their experiments. The most notable example is Huggy Wuggy, whom The Prototype ordered to flee the Playtime Co. Factory. Huggy Wuggy only attacks employees when aggravated. After running too far out, he roams the woods.

Story

Backstory

Little is known about The Prototype other than it was the ideal vessel for Playtime Co.'s Bigger Bodies Initiative. Experiment 1006 was presumably the first sentient experiment to come after the company's attempts at replicating Elliot Ludwig's post-mortem vessels for possession. The Prototype was an outlier in the experiments because it did not require food for survival. Harley Sawyer and other employees enjoyed observing these findings. During each session, The Prototype exhibited new traits, making it an interesting subject for examination.

Scientific Logs

During one session, specifically during Log 24459, The Prototype had a conversation with Harley Sawyer, questioning if any employees felt remorse for the experiments. Harley Sawyer cleverly retorted, pointing out how The Prototype continuously uncovers new aspects about him in each session. The Prototype thanked Harley. Then, the Prototype mocked Harley again. The Prototype remarked that he learns something from Harley every day.

During another session, in Log 08502, the Scientist recounts an incident involving The Prototype. According to the Scientist, 1006 was primarily kept in his chamber and monitored at all times. However, one day he created a laser pointer from the digital alarm clock in his room, fired it at the camera, and disabled it for 28.3 seconds. He hid in a blind spot, which forced a surveillance specialist to approach. He attempted to escape through the door but it was re-locked before he could do so. Unfortunately, the specialist who was trapped inside was killed, resulting in one casualty.

RESTRICTED-Disappearance

On June 18, 1992, Huggy Wuggy was influenced by The Prototype and ordered to leave the Playtime Co. Factory. Without any warning, Huggy Wuggy hastily left the facility through an open bay delivery door. Interestingly, Huggy Wuggy did not display any hostile behavior during his escape, merely running out of the building before being captured on surveillance footage wandering into the woods. Upon encountering employees who began firing darts at him, Huggy Wuggy, while not under the direct control of The Prototype, perceived their presence as a threat and attacked them. This resulted in the deaths of nearly 11 employees, with 6 others reported missing.

The Hour of Joy

At some unspecified time in the 1990s, The Prototype was declared missing. In a VHS tape, Marcas Brickley Reprimanding, it was stated that a character with "fifty feet and a thousand legs" stole a mop handle, which, while implying that this character was PJ Pug-a-Pillar, the motivation for stealing such an item is incongruous for a character like him.

During this time of freedom, it allowed 1006 to seize the Playtime Co. Factory on August 8, 1995. This event, known as "The Hour of Joy," involved a massacre and prison break of all life forms present in the factory. While the employees were focused on transporting Kissy Missy to Playcare, the Bigger Bodies experiments began a rebellion as they mindlessly slaughtered children, adults, and scientists, all while under the influence of The Prototype. According to Poppy, the bodies were hidden and the toys eventually fed on them. However, as the human supply dwindled, the toys began betraying each other in an effort to secure the remaining food resource.

Chapter 2: Fly in a Web

After Mommy Long Legs was killed by the Grinder and her severed torso fell to the ground, The Prototype's claw appeared from under the half-closed door on the left. It reached out and grabbed Mommy's torso, dragging it back under the door. He's not seen again after that. Near the end of the chapter, before Poppy's monologue is cut off, we hear the sound of an alarm clock going off, indicating that the Prototype has captured Poppy.

Chapter 3: Deep Sleep

Chapter 3 features The Prototype in two scenes. In the hallucination cutscene of CatNap, he appears right after attacking the protagonist in the counselor's office. After finishing the CatNap boss fight at the end of the game, he appears and reaches down to catnap, piercing through his mouth and killing him. We get to see the shrine that CatNap built for The Prototype after completing a puzzle in the cave system. This is the closest view we have of what The Prototype actually looks like. In Chapter 4, we may finally see the full form of The Prototype, but for now, we can only see its Claw. Poppy informs the Player that CatNap is the final obstacle set by The Prototype after repowering the dome and taking the lift back down. This suggests that we will face The Prototype in the next Chapter.

Project: Playtime

While he doesn't make a physical appearance, his hands are one of the GrabPack Skins in Project: Playtime. However, it has been theorized that he is the one who instructs the monsters during their tutorial.

"The others are hungry. The others are starving. GET UP."

Abilities and Anatomy

The Prototype possesses the ability to replicate any voice that he hears. During his conversation with Harley Sawyer, multiple voices are heard when he speaks.

Other Facts

The wires of the hand are tangled with human bones, suggesting that The Prototype was either once human or that it obtained bones from an employee. For instance, when Mommy Long Legs was being crushed to death in the grinder, she screamed, "He'll make me part of him." It is possible that The Prototype took the body parts from his victims. This implies that he his is incorporating parts of toys and humans into his body. Mommy implies that toys are fully aware of what is happening in the factory. The Prototype may have been attempting to rescue the children and experiments from Playtime Co. One of the VHS tapes in Chapter 1 confirms that he has the skills of coordination and cooperation.
