Tinting?

What is tinting?
As explained in ptskinguide, "Tinting is where you add a colour filter/overlay over a skin you have already completed/are in the process of making. Later, you transfer the colours over to ponytown via colourpicking the image. Tinting can be done in any editing/art program (such as ibispaint, procreate, clip studio paint, etc.) that has a layer function!".

I have been tinting using pixlr.com for a very long time now. Pixlr is a free photoshop website that has a lot of options, and most importantly does not require for u to create an account. I will carefully explain my process of tinting and teach u how I do it; carefully step, by step..

Before I explain to you how to tint, I will bring up other essential things..

A)
It is very important to note some images might need to be viewed on a 200% zoom. (or less if it works for u). If u refuse to do that, you can click on the image and it will open in another tab. My genuine apologies, I really cared about looks when remaking this page.

B)
Please, do make sure you are viewing very specifically https://pixlr.com/editor/.

@deepaffection

C)
Pixlr is 100% free of use! You do not need to subscribe, or create an account. U can upload and edit any pictures right away by clicking "open image".

@deepaffection

D)
Pixlr layout is NOT that complicated. We will mainly be duplicating images, and applying filters onto them. The image below has arrows, that point at buttons we will be clicking most. Please do follow any additional instructions.

Blue arrow - filters
Orange arrow - duplicate button

getting a PNG

The very first.. important step.. is to very obviously get an image of your pony!

You can screenshot it, thats fine. But, I recommend directly downloading a PNG to ensure quality and no unnecessary background. We would need to it separate from the skin anyway as it is best u make ur skin on a background that consists of any in-game hexcodes. Any hexcodes u could use for this are included on linked image. For the sake of this tutorial i will be using #7CCA92

(If what I said wasn't clear enough - due to colour theory, colours look VERY different depending on their sorroundings, backgrounds. Tinting ur skin on a very dark background could cause confusion when clrpicking ur tinted pony. That is why I advise for u to remove the background, so it doesn't get tinted with the skin. The background should be either the colour of grass, water or path.)

A)
Getting the image

  1. Choose your character, go to editor and options. Then copy my settings:
  2. Next click on PNG and download the image
  3. Save it and you're done!

B)
After ur done, upload the img to Pixlr's editor page

  1. Direct yourself to https://pixlr.com/editor/
  2. Click "Open image"
  3. Look for the image you just downloaded, and begin tinting!

ACTUALLY!.. tinting

Pay attention to all the steps! Read carefully! I have tried my best to elaborate. If anything is unclear, please do contact me on dsc @lvvvf. I am open about changes.

@deepaffection

  1. Now look up. Change the settings to ones u see on right ->

@deepaffection
@deepaffection

  1. Use colourpicker (right). Input "#7CCA92" in HEX

@deepaffection

  1. Colour the layer in! (The gif is also a great example of what i've mentioned earlier! This skin looks really light on a dark background and other way around.)

B)
Applying filters!
@deepaffection

  1. Make sure u have chosen the "background" layer. (Should appear cyan) Duplicate it.

@deepaffection

  1. Go to "Filter" and open "Effect library.."

  1. Choose as many Filters as u want! I like to continuously update my layers to not lose any progress and have the ability to go back to previous tint whenever. (as shown below). I won't explain everything u can do on this website, but, u are free to also play with any Adjustments! Please, do experiment - it is a great way to learn new things.

@deepaffection

C)
After ur done screenshot the tinted pony. Now you can feel free to colourpick the image using a colour picker. Please stay mindful that the skin wont look 1:1 due to shadows on Ponytown. U Might still need to edit everything a little bit.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

A)
Will u ever create a mobile version of this tutorial?

  • I do not plan so. The process is quite literally identical, just much more annoying. The green background is not necessary to tint, but very helpful. You can skip that step. U can also tint ur skins on mobile using gallery filters; ibispaint; or even procreate. Do not be afraid to figure out things on your own!

B)
Couldn't you just use the bucket?

  • It is much more satisfying this way, but yes, if it is much easier for you; you can use the bucket instead of "Draw" for the same; but "quicker" result. The speed difference between these two things after u learn how to use "Draw" is quite literally.. almost none. It doesn't matter as much as u think.

C)
Can I privately contact you so you personally help me with a skin?

  • Yes please do so, add me on dsc if u need anything (@lvvvf)! I love helping out in any case I can, I much rather you do this than copy/clrpick someone.

D)
Can I contribute by translating the page?

  • Yes! Again, contact me on discord if u wish to do so. I would love that! Mostly looking for Indonesian, Vietnamese, Portugese/Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian translators if possible. But i'd love any other language too 6-6!!!

E)
How do I tint parts of my pony that are underneath clothing/get covered by something?

  • Create multiple skins and PNGs with parts you can't see properly!
  1. create multiple versions of the skin with parts u can't see; properly exposed.
  2. turn all of the PNGs into one layer
  3. tint all versions at the same time!
    VIDEO EXAMPLE

F)
Whenever I colourpick my colours are severely affected because of ponytown shadows. How do I manage?

  • You need to colour match it!
  1. colour pick your image.
  2. copy and paste it in both boxes; normal colour and outline colour.
  3. colour match the darker colour with the outline.
  4. lastly colour pick your outline!

experiment

There's no rulebook to ponytown skins, this tutorial has been created to allow you to just experiment, test new styles! Improvement comes with learning more, and no-one gets anywhere without trying new things! Reminder, my entire tutorial is made on the basis that you do not need to colourpick skins off pinterest, stay creative!

Please do not rip my code/claim my guide as your own. It is unfair to me and the hard work I put into this rentry if you do that. Please credit me if you want to use it anywhere.
