Man of God Olivine
Room 1
"With the assistance of the princess - recently married off to the prince of a neighboring country - the Queen seized her opportunity to launch a coup d'état. Together the two of them overthrew the tyrant king, saving the people of the kingdom from his oppressive rule. And so they spent the rest of their days, living happily ever after..."
(The hard working step-mother queen and the fiercely independent princess join hands to start a new life together??)
Hmm... this story is uplifting, for sure, but maybe a little too mature in some parts...?
(It's a pretty forward thinking tale, though... It really captures the imagination and keeps you eager to find out what happens next. This author's got talent!)
(But the illustrations are a little unusual... they're a little too rough and sketchy.... Maybe all the fairy tale books in this world are like this?)
That story was a real snore-fest... yawn --
Yeah! That wasn't exciting at all!
Mr Olivine's stories are way better!!
Mr Eiden, let's wrestle!
Whoa, don't pull my hair -- You little punks... cough I was just a little surprised since this is the first time I've read this kind of story...
Let's try this one next! I'll show you the storytelling powers I honed over years of telling stories to the other kids at the orphanage...!
What's wrong Eiden? I could hear it getting a little noisy over here...
Ahh -- Mr Olivine! Mr Eiden is being super mean!
(These little... no-good runts...!)
Mr Olivine, tell us a story pleeease!
I wanna hear that story about the prince who fell asleep in his castle and didn't wake up until his whole country had been destroyed!
We've heard that one a million times already! I wanna hear that one about the guy who sells matches and accidentally sets his house on fire--!
(... What the hell are these stories!??)
Okay, okay, calm down everyone, it's time for lunch. Let's all go eat! If you eat all your vegetables, then I'll tell you a story before your afternoon nap.
Yay~!
I'm gonna show those vegetables who's boss! Just you wait!
Ah, there they go, like a happy hurricane, terrorizing everyone in their path...
Well, I said I'd help out looking after the kids while you prepared lunch, but in the end they spent the whole time calling for you...
(Looking after kids is supposed to be one of my specialties! But it seems I really can't compare to the handsome "idol" of the temple over here...)
They're normally quite wary of strangers. The fact that they were so lively means they already feel comfortable with you.
Plus, the volunteer who was supposed to come today couldn't make it. If you hadn't come to help out, I'd be totally rushed off my feet!
I guess you're right... Then I better keep trying my best! I wanna join afternoon nap story time too! Even if the stories from this world are weird as hell...
Huh? Weird? I thought they were all tales filled with positivity, dreams and adventures...
(You mean stories like... a young boy who sells matches accidentally burning down a house. Then devoting his life to learning fire sorcery and becoming a world renowned sorcerer. Then getting rich and buying a ton of houses... These kinds of stories...?)
(Well I suppose it is a tale full of positvity... If you look at it a certain way...)
It seems I still need to work on my story writing skills...
Writing... Huh --? All these stories were written by you!?
That's right. After all, it doesn't seem right to use donations to buy presents for the children. So, for the most part, all the stories and toys here were made by the volunteers and I.
Writing stories is fascinating. You find yourself whisked away to another kingdom or even adventuring through another world. I'm always so happy when I'm writing stories... It's gradually become a big hobby of mine.
Ah, I totally understand! Although being creative isn't always easy, it's often very rewarding! Especially when your clients... cough I mean when your readers, or those kids, give you a good review. It gives you a great sense of accomplishment that's hard to put into words.
Exactly. It's absolutely worth the effort when you see the smiles on the children's faces. When they run over with a book in their hands, calling for me to read them a story... They're just so adorable.
So have you written any new stories recently? It looks like there are already a lot of books here, but they all seem to have been read to death...
Recently, I've been very busy with all sorts of tasks around the temple. Plus, there's the fact that I'm certainly no expert at writing... and illustrating even less so. As such, making each one of these fairy tale books takes a fair amount of time --
(So he's having trouble with the illustrations? Even though I think his drawings are pretty "unique" --)
Then... if you don't mind, how about allowing me to take care of the illustrations?
Really?
Illustrating might not be my specialism, but doing a few simple drawings should be a piece of cake!
Although your stories are a bit... "special", they're definitely full of surprises. You never know what's going to happen next! I'd love to give it a go... What do you think?
If you're willing... then I'd love you to...!
Then it's decided. While you're coming up with your next story, I'll be hard at work practicing my artistic skills.
My illustrations are sure to blow your mind!
Room 2
"Deep under the vast, blue ocean, there lived a green-spotted flounder. This particular flounder looked different from all the rest and had a particular curiosity towards the world beyond the ocean - dry land. However, because of this, he was shunned, leaving him feeling sad and alone..."
"In order to leave the ocean and find what he was searching for deep down in his heart... the flounder signed a contract with an ocean-dwelling sorcerer. This allowed the flounder to transform into human form and walk upon dry land as he'd always desired. There the flounder fell in love with a human prince --"
.........
W-What do you think? Do you think the children would want to hear more?
Hmm... I know you haven't finished this story yet, but does the ending involve the flounder turning into a load of bubbles and disappearing to protect the one he loves?
Bubbles...? Why would he turn into bubbles? That kind of ending sounds a little too upsetting for a children's story...
T-True... I don't really like sad endings either. Plus, it wouldn't really be your style...
I thought this would be a real tough project, but by using the free time in between trips to work on the story, we're already about half done!
The story's coming along much quicker with you here to help, Eiden!
Plus, your drawings are amazing! I can feel the warmth in the brush strokes, and the fish look so adorable... You can really feel the melancholy of the flounder in his underwater home...
It makes you truly resonate with his misery and loneliness, as well as support his resolve to leave the ocean...
Olivine...
cough It's because of your great writing! I was worrying that my drawings wouldn't live up to your awesome story...
There's no right or wrong when it comes to art! It doesn't matter whether it's a story or a painting... In fact, it was my younger siblings who taught me this. No matter how awful my drawings looked, or how dull the stories I wrote were to read, they always enjoyed them with so much enthusiasm.
Ah, I can totally see why they love them! All I need to do is read one of your stories and my imagination runs wild!
(Growing up in a big group of kids, it was always super noisy. I never really had much time to just sit down and enjoy a story like this...)
That reminds me, I have some ideas for the scene where the flounder first meets the one he loves. I've done three different sketches, let me know which one you think is most suitable...
Let me see... that part is...
"Rays of light from the rising sun shine down upon the flounder's new human form, washed up on the beach. He slowly opens his eyes and his gaze fixes on something he has never seen before. The human before his eyes looks far more alive, for more real than anything he ever imagined from his underwater home..."
"The flounder tries hard to hold back his excitement and joy, but the human, sharp as a tack, detects this -- With a smile on his face, he reaches out a hand towards the flounder..."
(Olivine has the perfect voice for telling stories... It's so gentle, it adds incomparable beauty to whatever he's saying. Just like the sunlight in the story, his warm voice gets you completely wrapped up in his magical tale...)
(It's no wonder those kids love listening to Olivine's stories so much...)
Hmm... these drawings are all so good... I can't decide. Why don't you pick?
Hmm... Let me think it over...!
Writing fairy tales is no simple task... You've got to use easy to understand language as well as bright, vivid illustrations to help the kids develop their imaginations. Plus, there's the task of including subtle yet important life lessons..."
It really is admirable how much devotion you put into those mischievous little demons...
Those children... Their parents are all busy out working in the fields. They have no time to properly take care of them. Before, when my younger brother and sister were still at the temple, they would all play together and even became great friends.
Well, at the very least, even though their parents are so busy, they have you and the other temple volunteers to take care of them. They get hot meals, as well as stories and toys, not to mention a whole bunch of friends to play with... I'd say they're pretty lucky, after all.
You really think so?
Of course. Heaven knows I'm a little jealous!
To hear you say that... I can't tell you how relieved it makes me feel. Doing these things for the children... really does make a difference.
Well, our current goal is to finish this story of "The Flounder and the Prince"! I reckon we'll have it all done by the next time we return to the temple and we'll finally be able to share it with the kids!)
Agreed!
Getting back to the story then... have you already decided on an ending?
Ah... actually, I haven't.
Because... their story is only just beginning!
